Social Security cost-of-living allowance increases for 2017 is just 0 #fa #playbook, #special #reports, #fa

#

Social Security cost-of-living allowance increases for 2017 is just 0.3 percent

Your Social Security check will increase by a measly 0.3 percent next year.

That’s according to the Social Security Administration, which announced its 2017 cost-of-living adjustment on Tuesday. The “COLAs” are based on increases in the Consumer Price Index.

The agency also will be taking more. It said it will increase the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax to $127,200 from $118,500, starting in January.

Social Security checks

The announcement comes months after the agency’s board had predicted that the adjustments payable next January would range from zero to 0.7 percent. The Medicare Trustees report in June had predicted a COLA increase of 0.2 percent for Social Security.

The average monthly Social Security benefit in January will be $1,360, $5 more than now, according to the government.

News of the tiny increase doesn’t come as a surprise for financial planners, who already held out pessimistic expectations.

Stretching a dollar

Financial advisors have said that they aren’t counting on Social Security COLAs as a retirement income boost, especially since 2016 was a year with no increase for retirees.

As a result, advisors are looking for other ways to help older clients generate income, including increasing allocations to stocks.

“If inflation happens, whether Social Security recognizes it or not, you’ll have to increase retirement income,” said Benjamin Brandt, a fee-only financial planner at Capital City Wealth Management in Bismarck, North Dakota.

“It’s not coming from your pension or from Social Security,” he said. “It’s coming from your investment portfolio.”

The effect of having a tiny-to-flat increase in Social Security is much more jarring for people who largely depend on the government program.

“The government is looking at CPI, and if they see no inflation, then there’s no increase,” said Gregory L. Olsen, a partner at Lenox Advisors in New York.

“Seniors who rely on it are in a position where if their rent goes up $50 a month, but Social Security increases by only $5 a month, what will you do without now?” he asked.

There aren’t very many ways for retirees to squeeze out an extra dollar from otherwise “safe” pots of cash. Rates on three-year certificates of deposit are still below 2 percent. and savings accounts are crediting interest in the neighborhood of 1 percent.

Medicare woes

Next year, a handful of retirees will contend with increased costs for Medicare Part B, the insurance program that applies to doctor’s services and outpatient care.

A “hold harmless” provision buffers most retirees from increased Medicare Part B expenses in a year when the increase in the premium is higher than the Social Security COLA. These people will not pay higher Part B costs.

You can expect to pay higher Part B premiums in the following situations:

  • You’re eligible to enroll in Medicare for the first time in 2017.
  • You’re enrolled in Medicare, but you aren’t collecting Social Security.
  • You’re already subject to Medicare premium surcharges because you didn’t enroll on time and now have to pay a penalty.

Keep a lid on your costs by enrolling for Medicare when you’re eligible. You can sign up during the initial enrollment period, which starts three months before your 65 th birthday and ends three months after.

If you miss that first enrollment window, you will be subject to a 10 percent late fee for each 12-month period you went without coverage. You will pay this surcharge for the remainder of your life.

Where do the candidates stand?

As retirees and their financial advisors grapple with the prospect of another year with flat Social Security income, the presidential candidates have had little to say about the program at the last two debates.

But Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton spelled out their positions in an AARP Bulletin on June 27.

There, Clinton’s campaign said she was against cutting COLAs, would push back against privatization of the program, and fight efforts to increase the retirement age. She has also supported taxing high earners’ income beyond the current cap of $118,500.

In that same AARP Bulletin. Trump’s campaign said he would work with Congress to ensure “we have a pro-growth agenda in place,” but did not provide details on specific changes to Social Security.

“If we are able to sustain growth rates in GDP that we had as a result of the Kennedy and Reagan tax reforms, we will be able to secure Social Security for the future,” his campaign said.

When your poor health prevents you from working, Social Security disability benefits can prove a crucial financial lifeline to help you support your family. The Social Security Administration provides cash support to millions of Americans who suffer from physical and mental conditions that prevent them from working.

While this help is available, the process of applying for Social Security Disability Benefits can be quite complicated. This website can connect you with a Social Security attorney in your area who can help you win your claim for disability benefits. Finding a lawyer to represent your Social Security claim is the first step you can take towards being approved for monthly Social Security disability benefits.

In 1935, the Social Security Act passed Congress, but it was not until 1956 that the Social Security disability program was created. The Social Security program is intended to provide at least a subsistence level of income to the nation s most vulnerable citizens. The Social Security program has been praised by both Republican and Democratic presidents, who have called it a crucial safety net for America s workers.

Social Security reflects some of our deepest values the duties we owe to our parents, the duties we owe to each other when we re differently situated in life, the duties we owe to our children and our grandchildren. Indeed, it reflects our determination to move forward across generations and across the income divides in our country, as one America. William J. Clinton.

Some 8 million Americans who suffer from mental or physical disabilities receive Social Security disability benefits each month, along with some 34 million retired workers who receive Social Security retirement checks. The Social Security program is funded by payroll taxes. Over 20 percent of the federal budget is devoted to the Social Security program.

We can connect you with experienced Social Security attorneys lawyers who can help you navigate the often confusing bureaucracy that is the Social Security Administration. For more, visit this page on applying for SSDI and SSI benefits.

Social Security Disability Insurance is only paid in a cases of total disability. The Social Security Administration only handles cases of total disability and never provides benefits in instances of partial disability or short-term disability. The Social Security system is funded by payroll taxes and as a worker you have spent years having money deducted from your paycheck and deposited into this public trust fund. To be eligible, a disabled worker must have worked for a certain length of time in a position where he or she paid Social Security taxes.

    The Heart of DU

When you take classes in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS), you join the University of Denver’s largest and most diverse academic unit, and gain the education and skills necessary to succeed at nearly any career in today’s global, communication-based society.

AHSS is where all DU undergraduate students build the foundation of their higher education. All undergraduate students take liberal arts courses with us, and one-third of these students declare an AHSS major. Plus, the majority of our departments and schools offer graduate or PhD programs.

PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT CONNECTS STUDENTS WITH LOCAL SENIORS

Photography is helping bridge the generational gap between college students and those living in a local senior living community. Roddy MacInnes, associate professor of photography, helped launch a project that pairs nearly two dozen DU photography students with residents of Clermont Park Retirement Community. The students and seniors have been photographing each other and then writing essays about their experiences. Read more.

    study within AHSS

AHSS faculty, staff and students come together in a shared quest for knowledge of the human condition. Students from around the world join us to study the many ways in which humans live in time and in space, as individuals and in groups. Our award-winning faculty members incorporate their national and international research and creative endeavors into the classroom to enhance your learning experience.

As an AHSS student, you will learn the theories and techniques of your field as well as the skills to:

    Think critically

Omar Gudino, assistant professor of psychology. is working to understand and meet the needs of children and adolescents who are at high risk of developing emotional and behavioral problems due to exposure to trauma or other forms of adversity. Gudino and his colleagues in the Services for At-Risk Youth and Families (SAYF) research lab at the University of Denver work in partnership with local human services agencies to develop treatment options that meet the mental health needs of high risk youth.

    Communicate effectively

Mark Dodge (MA ’00, anthropology) has loved museums since he was a kid, and today he has found a career to match this passion as the Exhibit Collections Curator for Golden History Museums. He enjoys getting out into the community and speaking with residents, documenting their stories and building the museum collection of artifacts and photos. “Everyone has a story to tell or something to share and museums may be one of the few places still willing to listen,” said Dodge.

Gain knowledge to forge new ideas

Two DU students have used their past experiences and academic interests to develop a research project that has allowed them to study different cultures on multiple continents. Sam Estenson and Hannah Parkes have conducted their research for over a year. “The research we have completed so far has given me deeper insights into the global atmosphere through the lenses of languages and the cultures of these countries, which is fascinating,” Parkes said.

Adapt to different cultures and increase intercultural skills

As an undergrad studying abroad in Ecuador, Alison Krögel, associate professor of Spanish. learned quickly that if she wanted to communicate with Ecuadorians throughout the region, she needed to learn the most commonly spoken indigenous language. Not Spanish, but Quechua, a language spoken by 10-12 million people throughout the Andes of South America. Krögel began studying Quechua both in graduate school and at the Centro Bartolomé de las Casas in Cusco, Peru. Her interest in the Quechua language and culture has led to a career focus on the Andean region.

    Contribute meaningfully

Wendy Low is a proponent for social justice. It’s not a passing interest, but a lifelong passion that was ignited when she joined her first cause at the age of ten. Today, Low continues to advocate for social justice as president of Never Again. a student group that promotes awareness of the Holocaust and atrocities of genocide to the DU community.
