MDM The acronym MDM features regularly in articles, reports and statistics related to imported meat products. MDM refers to mechanically deboned meat and is often also referred to as MRM (mechanically recovered meat), as well as MSM (mechanically separated meat). It is a paste- like meat product produced by forcing chicken (it can also apply to beef, pork and turkey) under high pressure through a sieve or similar device (a mechanically deboning machine) to separate the bone from the meat tissue. The objective is to optimize recovery and yield of the remainder of the carcass efficiently and effectively once the primal cuts have been removed. The paste, thus extracted, is used in the manufacture of processed meat (polonies, viennas and Russian sausages. It is very important to note, that all MDM is imported, as it is not produced in South Africa because the raw materials used in the process achieve far greater profits by selling them in the raw bone-in state. Products derived from MDM are often the only types of protein affordable to the poorer segments of our population. The following represents MDM volumes imported into South Africa over the six year period, 2006-2011: Year Metric tons 2006 76907 2007 92682 2008 92408 2009 82266 2010 101225 2011 122391 Approximately 90% of the above imports were sourced from Brazil. Current import volumes of around 10000 tons per month are a clear indication of the critical role that MDM plays in the lives and eating habits of consumers. It also indicates its value and importance to the local food processing industry. As mentioned above, MDM is not manufactured in South Africa and therefore cannot reasonably or honestly be included in import figures that are compared to local production figures of poultry. Yet this is exactly what is regularly done when such comparisons are made by local industry in its attempts to demonize importers and exaggerate the volume and effects of imported chicken on the local market. This is both disingenuous and deceitful.

    Small and medium enterprises (SME) typically are lean, agile organizations. On one hand, functional managers of SMEs often wear multiple hats and are focused on executing the day-to-day operations to ensure their organization’s survival. On the other hand, the executives of SMEs are charged with creating a strategic vision and executing on that vision to ensure the long-term viability of the organization. And oh by the way depending on the size of the organization, the executives may also be working in the trenches as well to maximize the chances to achieve success.

    Like their larger brethren, success requires SMEs to be able to not only articulate the strategic goals of the organization, but also to capture and implement them at all levels of the enterprise to ensure that all projects, not matter how small or large, are aligned to the enterprise’s overall strategy. The lack of a middle management layer in SMEs, however, often means that there is no one in the organization to help translate the vision of the executives into operational terms so that the entire enterprise and all of its projects (i.e. tactical activities) are working in concert to achieve the same common set of goals.

    Strategic management offices (SMO) represent one approach to help SMEs align their tactical operations with their strategic planning, bridging the gap between the operations management and the executive suite while optimizing resource management and minimizing waste.

    In this episode, we will examine what makes strategy implementation so difficult in SMEs, what is an SMO, and how does an SMO differ from a project management office (PMO).

    New 2016 rankings by Fashion School show we re No. 1 in the Midwest for fashion merchandising, No. 2 nationally among public schools and colleges, and No. 2 nationally. In fashion design, we re No. 2 in the Midwest. No. 3 nationally among public schools and colleges, and No. 8 nationally.

    Getting opportunities to model in, design for, or produce the annual Fashion Show — one of the largest student-produced fashion shows in the nation.

    Learning in state-of-the-art facilities . such as a textiles conservation laboratory, detailed historical garment collection, apparel production center, and clothing museum expose you to new equipment and complex processes.

    Bachelor of Science in Apparel, Merchandising, and Design

    As an Apparel, Merchandising, and Design student, you will build a comprehensive base of knowledge about the textiles and apparel industry, including merchandising and marketing strategies, product development, and production processes. You’ll further define your career path by choosing from either the design or merchandising programs.

    Design

    The design program focuses on the jobs and skills necessary to bring an apparel product to life. Within the design program, you will choose one of four concentration areas:

    If you like to sketch out your ideas, doodle new designs, and envision a garment before it’s made, the creative design option may be for you. A background in textiles, pattern making, illustration, and aesthetics will give you the skills to create new looks and designs.

    In the technical design option, you’ll build an understanding of industry assembly methods and quality assurance standards, such as differences in fabric coloration, performance, cost, and quality. Your skills will increase the quality in apparel products and the methods in which they re made.

    Students in the product development option work to meet both the needs of consumers and designers. You’ll learn about trends and business demands and have the knowledge to plan, create, and present apparel products to fill niches within the market.

    Production and sourcing management

    If buttons come from Russia, and fabric comes from Indonesia, what does that mean for a consumer in the United States? Students studying production and sourcing management explore the latest technology and methods used to assemble garments in mass quantities from around the world. You’ll learn the fundamentals of production, including sourcing materials, timing deliveries, and managing cost.

    Merchandising

    If the role marketing plays in the apparel industry interests you, then the merchandising program may be right for you. Students in this option applying marketing strategies and entrepreneurial practices when buying, displaying, promoting, and selling products.
