Of all the insertables used in role play, the catheters offer a special sort of control game for the BDSM scene. Catheters: Brief History

The earliest precursor to the present day Foley catheter is documented in 3000 B.C. It is believed that Egyptians used metal pipes to perform bladder catheterizations. As early as 400 B.C. hollow reeds and pipes were used in cadavers to study the form and function of cardiac valves.

In 1844, Claude Bernard inserted a mercury thermometer into the carotid artery of a horse and advanced it through the aortic valve into the left ventricle to measure blood temperature. It is because of his work that the use of catheters became the method of standard for physiologists in the study of cardiovascular blood flow.

Adolph Fick took another major step in the development of cardiac catheterization in 1870. His famous note on the calculation of blood flow is the basis for today’s cardiac procedures.

Among the earliest published descriptions of human catheterization were done by Fritz Bleichroeder, E. Unger, and W. Loeb in 1912. They were among the first to insert catheters into the blood vessels without x-ray visualization. Interest in catheterization was also stimulated with the advent of chemotherapy.

Early chemotherapy required the injection of drugs directly into the central circulation. Bleichroeder inserted catheters into dog arteries and assessed the effects after leaving them in place for several hours. He reported no complications or clots.

The Foley Catheter came into existence in the 1930s. Frederick E. B. Foley began to experiment with different catheters of the time. He realized that urinary catheters would easily slip out of the bladder because there was no way to hold them in place.

Foley experimented with different methods of securing the catheter until he came up with the idea of attaching a balloon-like device to the end of the catheter. The device would then be able to be placed and then inflated from the outside. By 1934, Foley catheters were on the market. Other than in material, the Foley catheter remains relatively unchanged in design today!

Male External Catheters or “Texas Catheters”

Male external catheters have traditionally been used for the management of urinary incontinence due to surgery, injury and disease. These “condom type” devices are placed over the penis and attached to a collection device, usually a leg bag which is worn under the clothes for mobility or a bedside drainage bag for prolonged bed stays.

The nonsensitizing adhesive provides a reliable bond to the skin for extra confidence and maximum wear time. A kink-proof funnel helps ensure uninterrupted urine flow.

They are clear which allows easy inspection of skin and attachment area and made of either latex or silicone.

Hunched over the counter of his tiny, gadget filled stall in Beijing s vast Hailong Electronics City, Wang Ning bemoans a week without a single sale.

It s dying, says Wang, shaking his head as he looks out at abandoned stores and torn promotional posters in what was once the busiest market in the Zhongguancun district, known as China s silicon valley. There are more sales staff than customers around here. Everyone buys online now.

The six football-field-sized floors are dotted with shuttered shops, victims of the rise of Internet-based businesses like Jack Ma s Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and billionaire Richard Qiangdong Liu s, which started out in Zhongguancun almost two decades ago.

The online revolution promises to boost productivity and could create 46 million new jobs in China by 2025, many of them higher-skilled, according to a report by New York-based McKinsey Co. in July. The losers will be as many as 31 million traditional roles, the equivalent of the entire employed population in Britain.

While such creative destruction is a global phenomenon, its speed and scale in China is unparalleled, said Cao Lei, director of the China E-Commerce Research Center, a private research agency based in Hangzhou, the hometown of Alibaba.

The Internet helps improve productivity and efficiency, but it can be quite painful for traditional businesses, Cao said. Bookstores fail first, then clothing chains, then consumer electronics stores, then air-ticket booking offices, and in the future, bank branches and other traditional services facilities may fail.

Productivity Boost

The shift online could contribute up to 22 percent of the nation s productivity growth by 2025 and make up 7 percent to 22 percent of the total increase in gross domestic product from 2013 to 2025, McKinsey found. By 2025, that could translate into as much as 14 trillion yuan ($2.2 trillion) in annual GDP.

That s no consolation for Li Feng, who has a store on the fourth floor of Kemao Electronics City, just across the street from Hailong Electronics mall.

The market was packed with people when it first opened in 2004, said Li, looking up from the TV drama he was watching, for want of customers. Business has gone from bad to worse in the last five years. The impact from online sales is huge.

Li has shut down the retail side of his business and now tries to eke out a living providing IT services to existing corporate customers, he said, as fellow shopkeepers played poker in the otherwise empty stall next door.

Property developer Dalian Wanda, owned by China s second-richest man Wang Jianlin, plans to close 10 malls across the country and redesign another 25 to cut retail space, China Business News reported last month. Zong Qinghou, China s fifth-richest man with a beverage and chain-store conglomerate, said at a forum in August that online shopping businesses are affecting China s economic security by suffocating stores that have to pay rents.

Stores Close

Li Ning Co. a sports-clothing maker, is expected to post losses for the third consecutive year and has closed more than a thousand retail outlets since 2012. Anta Sports Products Ltd. a maker of shoes, has also been shutting down stores partly due to competition from online shopping.

Retail sales games are a fun and inexpensive way to inspire your retail sales staff to practice their higher level selling skills. Here are some of our favorites:

This retail sales game goes like this. Pick a day when you want to maximize sales and give the first person who makes a sale a $20 dollar bill to hold (or $10 bill or $50 bill depending on how hard you want your staff to play!) When someone makes a bigger sale they get “passed the buck.” The next time an even larger sale is made the “buck” gets passed again. The person who has the highest sale that day is left holding the buck and gets to take home the $20!

  2. It’s super simple.
  3. It encourages lots of add-on sales.
  4. It encourages up-selling.
  5. It rewards great retail sales performance immediately.
  6. It puts more money in the cash register!

This retail sales game has never failed to please our employees or put more money in the register. And it’s so easy you can do it today!

Here’s another great retail sales game from one of our favorite retailers, a flower and candy shop owner. She explains, “Here’s a contest we use on busy days. A large jar is filled with $1 bills. Every time an employee adds-on to a sale, (in our case, balloons, candy, etc.) they get to take a bill from the jar. There is competition to see who can collect the most dollars, while giving everyone a chance to be a winner.”

Love it! Your whole staff is motivated to continue the specific behaviors you’re looking for all day long, with every sale and everybody wins something. Perfect fro training retail employees!

Sales Poker is a slightly more complicated game, but it sure is fun! And it gets great results.

To play Sales Poker you’ll need several decks of playing cards, a bulletin board in the back room that’s big enough to post everyone’s poker hands, and a grand prize. Your prize could be cash, gift certificates to local restaurants, days off with pay, or merchandise.

You’ll also need a list of selling goals you want your employees to achieve with how many cards they get for reaching each goal. The harder the goal, the more cards they get. Here’s a possible list to give you the idea – but be creative and adjust to the specific needs of your store. The level of add-ons and dollars per sale should be higher than your average. You’re trying to push them to do more than normal!

  • Add-on two items – one card
  • Add on three or more items – two cards
  • Sale over $75 – one card
  • Sale over $150 – two cards
  • Sell three clearance items – one card
  • Sell a green-spotted turbo widget – three cards
  • Daily personal sales total of $2400 (or $300 per hour) – three cards

The retail sales game is pretty straightforward from here… each time an employee achieves a retail selling goal they get to draw the number of cards indicated on your list and they post them on the bulletin board under their name. At the end of the game period the person with the best poker hand wins!

Poker is best when played for multiple days, like a weekend or a whole week. That way everyone gets a chance to play and win. One of the great things about poker is that there is some element of luck. Even though the better salespeople will get more cards and therefore have better odds of winning, your top gun salesperson isn’t necessarily a shoe-in to win. That keeps everyone motivated to play and sell.

One of the quickest and easiest ways to add money to your bottom line is by training your staff how to sell. You can create your own selling culture by teaching your staff how to sell in your training program or you can create a service culture that sells by teaching the “Six Steps to the Perfect Purchase.”

As Plus-Size Fashion Gains Popularity, Retailers Play Catch-Up

If you’re a woman of a certain size, shopping for clothes can be a downer. Even though the average American woman is around a size 14, most department store racks are devoted to smaller bodies.

But that could be changing.

Plus-size actor Melissa McCarthy is about to launch her own clothing line. Another full-figured actor, Rebel Wilson, is designing one, too. Meghan Trainor’s smash hit “All About That Bass” is all about having more to love, and People magazine made headlines when it recently put size 22 model Tess Holliday on the cover.

There’s a plus-size movement afoot.

“We want more options in clothing and we want more representation of body types in the media,” Holliday said in an interview with NPR’s Here Now. “And I think it would be silly for major designers to not really care about the plus-size consumer, because we have money to spend.”

On a recent afternoon, there was plenty of foot traffic at Torrid in Gaithersburg, Md. It’s a chain known for offering the latest styles in plus sizes. Full-figured mannequins display lacy tank tops, fitted dresses with bold prints and bright colors, and even skinny jeans.

Aviva Copaken, 29, was at Torrid shopping for a new bathing suit. She said it’s the only place she likes to shop.

“It’s got really cute clothes that fit me, and I can just go do what I need to do, pick what I need to pick. And it’s great. It makes me feel normal,” she says.

Shopping just about everywhere else, she says, is exasperating.

“There’s nothing, basically,” she says. “I have no choices, and you feel like a minority.”

And yet she’s not.

“The industry has done a disservice to themselves by not offering some of those great choices for the plus-size consumer,” says Marshal Cohen, NPD retail analyst.

Despite the positive images of full-figured women in popular culture — fashion models, respected movie and TV stars — retail has generally not caught up. Cohen says major clothing stores aren’t eager to make a serious commitment to the plus-size market because it isn’t growing.

“Until the plus-size business grows at a rate greater than its current growth of 2 percent, they are going to wait. And that means that plus size is going to have to accelerate its growth rate closer to 4 and even 5 percent before the retailers are really going to embrace this,” Cohen says.

That neglect has been a gift for those apparel companies, like Torrid, that do embrace plus-size women.

Liz Munoz, senior vice president of design for Torrid, says that when she was growing up, she never found clothes she wanted to wear at the mall, so she learned to both design and sew them herself. Now she’s getting paid to do it.

“I have the very bad retailers and plus size when I was growing up to thank for my career,” she says. “We don’t make tentlike muumuus, which is what I had to face when I was growing up.”

Even veteran plus-size retailer Lane Bryant is trying to be more fashionable. Vogue contributing editor Andre Leon Talley says he was thrilled to see the award-winning designer Isabel Toledo create a range of sophisticated garments for Lane Bryant.

“Trench coats, capri pants, fluid dressing, cocktail dresses that were absolutely wonderful — and it’s on point. It’s anything done for a person who would be wearing a size 8. And I think that probably has taken Lane Bryant in a new direction for its customer,” Talley says.

Many people reading this story might be thinking that a plus-size movement is not a good thing, given all of the very real health concerns around obesity. But Torrid senior designer Munoz says that’s a separate issue.

“We’re not here to encourage people to be bigger. We’re not here to encourage people to be overweight. I think we are addressing the reality of what is going on in our world,” Munoz says.

Online shopping tends to be how most plus-size consumers answer that perennial question: What should I wear? Sites like ModCloth and Simply Be offer more items in more sizes. Analyst Marshal Cohen says even the large department stores have more offerings on their websites than they do on the racks. For a lot of Americans, he says, in-store shopping is not a positive experience.
