Top 50 online retailers in the UK: Argos reclaims second place from Apple

Argos is the second most visited online retailer in the UK behind Amazon, reclaiming second place from Apple, according to new data. The research, from Experian Hitwise and IMRG, indicates that Electronics retailers Currys (ranked 15), Comet (30), and PC World (38) all rose up the Hot Shops list this quarter.

Currys and PC World were also ahead year-on-year, up two and three places respectively on February 2011.

This quarter’s five fastest movers in the Hot Shops list were all travel brands. First Choice (up 37 places), Thomas Cook (+23), TravelRepublic.co.uk (+20), Thomson (+15) and Expedia (+12) all climbed in the rankings. Outside of the travel industry the fastest movers were LoveFilm.com (+10), Currys (+6), IKEA (+6) and PC World (+6).

Travel’s winter peak in January saw eleven travel brands rise in the rankings within the top 50. Premier Inn broke into the top 50 for the first time this quarter, and TravelRepublic.co.uk climbed 20 places on November to come back into the top 50.

As expected, this was a strong quarter for travel brands with the five fastest movers of the last three months all coming from this sector. Much like last year, it was the multi-channel travel agencies First Choice, Thomas Cook and Thomson that were the fastest-growing travel sites, although the airlines easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways all rose in the rankings too. By this measure First Choice’s decision last year to switch to purely all- inclusive holidays seems to have paid off, as the travel agency was ranked four places higher this year than in February 2011.

Post-Christmas shopping this year produced the biggest ever day of online shopping, with 96 million UK internet visits going to retail websites on Boxing Day 2011. In January it was the electronics providers and home improvements retailers that saw big increases in online traffic as consumers sought out big ticket items such as TVs, laptops, sofas, wardrobes and bathrooms. Currys, IKEA and PC World all jumped six places in the Hot Shops list since last
quarter, while Homebase and Comet were also among this quarter’s rising websites.

Online-only brands also had a strong quarter. Four of the top 10 in the Hot Shops list this quarter are online-only, including fashion retailer ASOS which climbed two places to 10th position. ASOS was also one of four fashion brands including Next, New Look and Very.co.uk that improved on its position year-on-year. Video rental and streaming site LoveFilm.com climbed 10 places to 18th in the list.

James Murray, Marketing Research Analyst at Experian Hitwise commented: “Travel has done well this quarter despite some really challenging market conditions. In early December many of Europe’s ski resorts were struggling with a lack of snow and things were looking pretty bleak, but massive snowfall in mid-December restored confidence and this together with people planning spring and summer breaks has seen the market bounce back well.

“As we predicted, 2011 was another record-breaking year for online retail with 343 million hours spent shopping online in December. As with Christmas 2010 there is still a gap between multi-channel retailers and online-only retailers. For the last three years multi- channel retailers like Next, Argos and John Lewis have consistently received more traffic than the online-only specialists like Amazon and Play.com. However, some online-only brands are starting to level the playing field, as witnessed by the rise of ASOS, LoveFilm.com and the specialist travel brands in the rankings.”

Tina Spooner, Chief Information Officer at IMRG, commented: “These figures are consistent with what we’re seeing from the IMRG Capgemini Index, where sales in January for the travel sector were up 16% year-on-year, following what was a challenging year in 2011 for the online travel industry. The story is similar for the electronics retailers as well, where growth levels remained below average for the e-retail sector throughout 2011 but returned to fairly steady double-digit growth toward the end of the year.

“The November Hot Shops list coincided with the launch of the iPhone 4S and the passing
of Steve Jobs, which resulted in surges of traffic to displace Argos from second place for the first time. However, Argos has now climbed back to its familiar position, which is unsurprising for a retailer that now makes 40% of its sales online.”

The IMRG-Experian Hitwise Hot Shops List of the top 50 UK e-retailers* is the key indicator of online merchant performance. The List is published quarterly and tracks popularity, as indicated by visits, of those selling goods and services within the IMRG Capgemini Index Classification. This List is based on January 2012 data. The IMRG-Experian Hitwise Hot Shops List excludes eBay and price comparison / aggregator websites such as Kelkoo and Froogle.

If you’re thousands of miles from Canal Street (or if the idea of Canal Street makes you retch), you’ll love Fashion Junkee. Their “Inspired by Marc Jacobs” Stam bag is a ridiculously low $46, and their “Inspired by Balenciaga” motorcycle bag is only $58 and comes in twenty different colors.

forever21.com This is the store that definitely sucks away the biggest portion of my paycheck. See a plaid Dolce Gabbana skirt on the fall runway you’re dying to have? Chances are they’ve got a similar item in their store for about a thousand dollars less. But the store can get crowded, and the music they play is annoying, so shopping online is a godsend. They add new merchandise everyday so visit often. Also, be sure to check out their higher end (as in, a few extra Hamiltons) label Twelve by Twelve and their accessories line For Love 21 .

knowlabel.com This isn’t a designer label (Know Label, get it?), but if you don’t care what the tag says then this is an amazing website to find high quality clothing at low prices. My favorite items include a little black party dress with rosettes in the style of Philip Lim for $48, and a white silk pleated babydoll top with black ribbon trim that looks like it was taken off the back of Chloe Sevigny, also only $48.

newport-news.com This site is really all about the shoes. They’ve got dresses, bikinis, and lingerie, but these items tend to be for older women, mostly in their 30s. Skip over that stuff and go right to the footwear. They’ve got a pair of studded platform oxford booties currently on sale for $39 (was $49) that I’ve been dying to buy and classic t-strap pumps in a range of colors for only $29.

rustyzipper.com This is like a flea market you don’t have to wake up at 6 AM and drive to. They’ve got hundreds of vintage items for men and women all for around $30. Shoes, pants, dresses, all categorized by style (“Disco,” “Hippie,” etc.) and era (from the 1940s to today).

target.com I try to stay away from actual Target stores because I find that I walk in just trying to buy paper towels and come home with two bras, a pair of jeans, and a George Foreman Grill. I stick to target.com to keep myself from over-shopping and to make sure that what I walk in for is what I walk away with. In recent years they’ve also earned major style points with their Go International designer labels. Currently it’s Richard Chai ’s turn, but my favorite was definitely Proenza Schouler’s line. I wear their bustier top all the time!

topshop.com Supposedly the British high street chain Topshop is coming to America, but until it makes it to your city, you’ll have to settle for browsing the runway worthy duds and Kate Moss designed separates online.

    Many people see working at home as the Holy Grail of job perks and thanks to the Internet, it’s totally possible. Whether you want a full-time job or just want to make a little extra money on the side, the options are there if you know where to look.

    I should warn you now that “working from home” and “online jobs” do not translate to “get rich quick.” Always be extremely skeptical of jobs that promise a fortune for very little work. They’re almost guaranteed to be scams.

    Here are some more quick guidelines to avoid scams while looking for jobs online:

    — Always make sure the company is legitimate and has a solid online history.

    — Never pay any money – such as application processing fees – up front.

    — Never give out personal information in your application that a typical company wouldn’t ask for.

    — Do your research.

    With those caveats in mind, let’s look at some jobs.

    A home agent is a catch-all term that includes tasks like phone sales, market research, customer service and tech support. In other words, it’s any job that you would normally do in a large call center with hundreds of other people, but you do it from home.

    You can find home agent jobs listed on regular job boards like Indeed.com, Monster.com and others. Or you can go right to the source with dedicated home agent companies like Converygs, TeleTech and Sitel. These companies generally treat you as an employee with regular hours and health benefits, but if you want to be an independent contractor, check out a site like LiveOps.

    If you don’t mind stepping out of your home occasionally, you can sign up with a service like TaskRabbit. This helps you find small jobs near your home, like walking dogs, picking up groceries and making small repairs, and get paid for them.

    For those skilled in creative or technical areas like graphic design, video and image editing, writing or programming, you can try the life of a freelancer. There are plenty of job boards expressly for freelancers and people who want to hire them.

    Three sites I recommend often are Elance. Guru and FreelanceSwitch. You can look through jobs people are posting or post your skills and let them find you.

    Most of these sites let you set your own hourly or project rate before you start applying. Keep in mind that some jobs might require a lengthy interview process before you’re hired. Pay can vary from a few bucks to several hundred dollars, depending on the project.

    Of course, being a freelancer isn’t always smooth sailing. You’ll run into difficult clients, which could leave you without pay or even in court.

    If you can write, but don’t want to write for someone else, being an e-book author might be the job for you. With publishers getting $3 billion in sales on e-books last year – that doesn’t include self-published e-books – there’s definitely money to be made.

    You don’t even have to write a novel to succeed. Short stories, funny life anecdotes, insightful commentary and detailed instructions in skill-based tasks are all popular topics that you can sell.

    Just head over to Amazon or Barnes Noble and look at the top-selling e-books in every category to get an idea of what kind of titles and topics sell the best. Then figure out what unique viewpoint you can bring to those areas and get writing.

    Before you publish, be sure to have an editor or two go over your manuscript. You can use friends or family, but you might also want to contract a professional using some of the freelance sites I mentioned earlier. You also might want to hire someone to create a great cover – it’s the first thing people will see after all.

    Then you just need to decide where to sell. Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing is a good place to start. Apple’s iBookstore is another. Or you can create your own e-book file – PDF or ePub – using a program like Calibre and sell it independently through your own website.

    No matter where you post the e-book, marketing is key. You’ll want to promote it on social media at the very least. One good trick is to start a blog and post short blurbs or even full chapters to give people a taste. Maybe start an entire site on the same topic as the book to gather than audience.

    Shoppers Still Prefer In-Store Over Online Shopping

    Although online shopping may be more convenient, shoppers still prefer to make their purchases inside an actual store, new research finds.

    Nearly 40 percent of consumers make purchases inside a physical store at least once a week, compared to just 27 percent who do the same online, according to PwC s annual consumer survey.

    Even though online shopping may be easier than going to a store, many different factors are driving shoppers decisions to make the trek out to a store. The research found that 65 percent of consumers said they shop in-store to avoid delivery fees, while more than 60 percent said it allows them to have the item immediately. Additionally, 61 percent said they like trying on the item or seeing it in person before buying it.

    Other reasons shoppers prefer brick-and-mortar shopping include that they like to support local businesses and it makes returns easier. Despite their preference for buying things in-store, consumers are still using online outlets as part of their shopping process. Nearly three-quarters of those surveyed spend time browsing products online before buying them at a physical store.

    For the past several years, the story around retail stores was showrooming, in which stores were places to display items for online purchase, Steven Barr, PwC U.S. retail and consumer practice leader, said in a statement. However, this year s survey results reveal that the online shop has also become a showroom where shoppers research and compare prices for later, in-store purchases.

    While many retailers are beefing up their mobile shopping efforts, it remains more of an instrument to get to the point of buying a product, rather than a tool for the actual purchase, according to the study. About half of those surveyed in the U.S. have researched products on their mobile phones, while nearly the same percentage have used them for price comparisons.     Overall, less than 10 percent of those surveyed make purchases via mobile devices on a weekly basis.

    Security issues top the reasons why consumers are hesitant to shop on their smartphones or tablets. One-third of the U.S. consumers surveyed said they do not use their smartphones or tablets for shopping due to security concerns, while 77 percent said they are wary about having their credit card information hacked.

    Social media is also playing an increasingly important role in the shopping process for consumers. Even though only 4 percent of U.S. consumers have purchased items via social media, 36 percent said their interactions with brands on social media has led them to buy more from these brands.

    Barr said that integrating technology, along with the power to engage on social media, has enhanced the consumer experience.

    As these disruptions continue to influence the shoppers purchase journey, the retail store will likely become an experiential venue for both online and non-online purchases, Barr said. From in-store design studios and personal shopping assistants, to coffee and tea ateliers, retailers are offering a comprehensive experience, evolving into something sleeker, more customized and increasingly attuned to shoppers expectations of what the in-store experience should be.

    In order to keep shoppers coming back, brick-and-mortar stores will need to become more tailored to the digital age, the study s authors noted.

    Consumers are seeking retail experiences over simple purchase transactions, which is inspiring landlords and retailers to collaborate on making the destination more enjoyable, convenient and memorable, said Byron Carlock, PwC s U.S. real estate practice leader. For the physical store to remain relevant today, retailers should adapt to consumer preferences.

    The study was based on surveys of more than 19,000 consumers around the world.
