These are the 7 most important skills retail managers need to have

Retail managers have to do it all: work with customers, manage sales associates, hit monthly store quotas and pitch in whenever something needs to get done.

That s why employers in the retail industry often look for a blend of diverse, transferable skills on a resume that are indicative of a versatile, well-rounded candidate who has a good understanding of the industry and is able to adapt as needed , says Michael Lan, resume consultant at Resume Writer Direct in Wilmington, Delaware.

These are the seven skills you most need to be a success as you rise in the ranks.

Customer service is critical for everyone in retail, says career communications specialist Kelly Donovan in Los Angeles. Retail is all about making sure the customer has an excellent experience every time, so this skill should be at the top of your list.

As a retail manager, you ll be supervising a team that may include inexperienced employees earning modest wages for a tough job, Donovan says. You ll need a track record of your leadership capabilities, and you must be able to provide examples of how you motivate people.

Devin Pappas, who works as a store manager and visual merchandiser for Clearwater, Florida-based Patchington, says that being able to assess other people s strengths and identify areas of opportunities is key. Depending on how the store or chain is managed, you may be asked to provide one-on-one management and written action plans for store teams. You ll also have to create a team environment to get everyone working together.

You may also be responsible for employees training and development, and you will need a background in recruiting or networking in the retail market to help fill positions, Pappas says. You ll need to be able to handle delicate situations with fairness and patience, follow corporate guidelines and hold every employee to high standards.

Most retail employees are responsible for sales, Donovan says. So sales skills are essential for the majority of retail applicants, whether you re going for an associate position or a management position.

Have examples ready that show you understand how to turn a browser into a buyer, and how to maximize sales by upselling customers with add-ons to their purchases.

Your own sales experience may not be enough. Not only do you need to motivate people to work, you must motivate people to sell, Donovan says.

A background in sales leadership is vital for retail managers. You may be asked to train sales associates and then improve their sales numbers over time.

Retail is constantly changing, says Lisa Ritchie, vice president of human resources at Match Marketing Group in Mississauga, Ontario. Retail managers need to be flexible and mentally tough to deal with day-to-day variations. While the uncertainty of the industry can be exciting, it can also lead to burnout if you don t have the chops to handle the ups and downs.

Retail is a fast-moving and dynamic industry, and it takes a lot to stay on top of everything that s going on. Successful retail managers are organized, good planners and strong troubleshooters, Pappas says. Being able to multitask helps as well.

You ll need to draw on your communication skills to work with employees, customers and your own manager, Pappas says. You ll be directing store meetings and will need to confront a variety of internal and customer-facing situations, both positive and negative. Being able to communicate effectively will serve you well through it all.

Alibaba Overtakes Amazon as Most Highly Valued Online Retailer

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. is knocking Amazon.com Inc. off its perch as the world s largest online retailer by market capitalization, signaling the ascendance of a global rival for investor and consumer dollars.

Alibaba begins trading on the New York Stock Exchange today after pricing its initial public offering yesterday at $68 a share, putting the Hangzhou, China-based company s valuation at $167.6 billion. That exceeds Amazon s market capitalization of $150.2 billion, as of its closing price in New York yesterday of $325.

Alibaba s pricing marks a milestone in the e-commerce market, where the center of gravity has long resided in the U.S. Amazon is the most prominent U.S.-based Web retailer, disrupting bricks-and-mortar rivals including Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and parlaying its success into cloud computing, smartphones and grocery delivery.

As a publicly traded company, Alibaba now presents an alternative for investors who want to benefit from growing global demand for online shopping. The IPO also gives Alibaba new cash that it can use to expand into areas — including possibly the U.S. — where it can vie with Amazon for customers.

This means that there s a new kid on the block that can give Amazon a run for its money, said Kirthi Kalyanam. director of the Retail Management Institute at Santa Clara University.

Ty Rogers, a spokesman for Seattle-based Amazon, didn t return a call for comment. Justin Dini, a spokesman for Alibaba, declined to comment, citing the quiet period ahead of the IPO.

By Revenue

Amazon remains the world s biggest e-commerce company by revenue, with sales totaling $74.5 billion last year. Alibaba s sales are a fraction of that, with 52.5 billion yuan ($8.6 billion) for the fiscal year ended March 31.

Alibaba is projected to increase revenue faster than Amazon. In 2015, Amazon sales are anticipated to rise 20 percent from a year earlier, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. By contrast, Alibaba revenue is estimated to increase 33 percent for its fiscal 2016.

Those growth rates will partly be driven by the different trajectories of Alibaba s and Amazon s respective home markets. China is set to overtake the U.S. in online spending by 2017, according to researcher EMarketer Inc. Web sales in the U.S. totaled $263.3 billion in 2013, compared to China s $132.6 billion, EMarketer said. Developing countries such as China are seeing faster e-commerce growth as their populations go online to make purchases for the first time, the researcher said.

China Potential

China is a bigger country and it also has better e-commerce penetration, said Hany Nada, managing partner with GGV Capital, a venture capital firm in Menlo Park, California, which invested in Alibaba.

Alibaba and Amazon also have vastly different profit trajectories. Alibaba s profit last year totaled 23.1 billion yuan, which was helped by its relatively low cost structure. The company doesn t buy the products it sells, nor does it pay for the warehouses where goods are stored, or the delivery and logistics infrastructure to get a package to a person s doorstep.

Instead, Alibaba s main websites — Taobao Marketplace, Tmall and Juhuasuan — serve as an intermediary to connect buyers and sellers. Alibaba collects fees on some sales or sells advertising for merchants who want to get featured higher when a customer searches for products.

Amazon Spending

Amazon, by contrast, produced just $274 million in profit last year. The company has a vast network of fulfillment centers where it keeps inventory of products that it ships. Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos is also spending on new initiatives, including tablet computers.

Alibaba has positioned itself to hold onto the Chinese market and grow, said Michael Tudor, president of Ripen eCommerce, an online retail consulting firm in Princeton, New Jersey. It has also shown an ability to turn a profit, which is something Amazon has had a difficult time doing.

Investors have criticized Amazon for the lack of profit, pushing the company s stock down more than 18 percent this year through yesterday — another reason that Alibaba now holds the crown as the world s most highly valued e-commerce company.

A lot of my friends order clothes from Urban Original. It only sells items for women. There is almost always a sale going on, like buy one, get one 50 percent off. You buy popular styles and brands, but you get them for extremely cheap. This is a good place to buy shoes and dresses for going out.

The Most Essential Online Shopping Destinations

These days, anyone with a smart phone and a wifi connection (read: pretty much everyone) is doing the bulk of their shopping on the internet. Amazon Prime and Asos have made it easier than ever to fill a closet, and the options on the world wide web are quite literally endless, but there are a few sites that set themselves above the rest.

High-End, Multi-Brand Retailers

From Net-a-Porter to Moda Operandi, here’s where to go when you’re ready to splurge.

Barneys. Barney’s website gives you the same experience you’d expect at its flagships: impeccable curation, exclusive designer collaborations, and eyes on emerging talent. In recent years the brand has added an editorial section called the Window, but the best online asset might be Barney’s Warehouse, where you can snag crazy discounts without having to sort through any crap.

Farfetch. One site, a zillion international boutiques. That means exclusives, rare finds, and obscure designers you’d have to travel to Mumbai, Tokyo, or Berlin to shop, all in one URL.

Net-a-Porter. Net-a-Porter is the OG of luxury online shopping, with over a decade of delivering the world’s top-tier labels through the magic of the web. Gorgeous designer gowns, jackets, and bags float on a white background like little works of art to scroll through. For men’s, head to the just-as-glossy sister site, Mr. Porter .

Moda Operandi. No one does pre-order quite like Moda Operandi, but the site has grown considerably from its early days of order-and-wait. MO now includes a boutique section where you can shop dozens of big designer names year round, with curated-by-category shops and inspirational editorial content to boot.

SSENSE. The Canadian-based retailer stocks a hearty selection of high-end ready-to-wear and accessories for men and women with a unifying principle of crisp, minimal, and forward. The site’s design mimics that ethos with little clutter, hyper-clear images, and not a serif in sight.

Totokaelo. The web extension of a Seattle store — which now has a beautiful outpost in New York City, as well — is all things airy minimalism. The designer roster includes a great in-house label plus heavy-hitters like Comme des Garcons, Issey Miyake, Jacquemus, Marni, Vetements, and so much more.

The Best Indie Sites

The sites supporting independent and up-and-coming designers.

Creatures of Comfort. This boutique’s New York and LA storefronts are must-shops if you find yourself in either city. If not, the online experience will certainly do. Designers here are pretty mid-range (Acne, Carol Callahan, Mansur Gavriel, Robert Clergie), but the tight edit and clean e-comm navigation set it apart from the rest of the pack.

La Garçonne. Despite its new Manhattan storefront, this boutique’s roots are in e-commerce, and its excellent online presence is an homage to restrained luxury in a palette of black, white, and maybe cream. Dozens of up-and-comers saddle up with major fashion houses for an edit that’s heavy on forever pieces styled in a forward-thinking way.

Of a Kind. Of a Kind knows which designers to watch out for before anyone else does, and has them create limited-edition capsule collections. This is a foolproof place to lock down a thoughtful gift, especially in the home and accessory departments, but the clothing and jewelry is definitely not to be missed, either.

Opening Ceremony. Once simply a quirky boutique, now a fashion force to be reckoned with. Find brand-new designers, niche lines from around the world, exclusives from big-name brands, and the store’s own in-house line in the expansive mix that’s never, ever boring.

The Dreslyn. From Rick Owens Lilies dresses to Kowtow printed jumpsuits, The Dreslyn carries a huge range of pieces by of-the-moment designers, including lots of new discoveries. The LA-based site always seems to have some sale or promotion going on, rendering out-of-reach items suddenly attainable.

Garmentory. Almost like an indie-er version of Farfetch, Garmentory represents hundreds of small stores and designers from across the globe, including some of the coolest boutiques in Portland, San Francisco, Brooklyn, and beyond. The style skews minimalist, and the “make an offer” feature for items on super sale really sweetens the deal.

That Sweet Spot

Where to shop when you’re willing to spend more than a hundo, but still less than two.

Aritzia. The Canadian boutique chain mostly sells in-house lines like Wilfred and Babaton, and the edit errs on the side of simple tops, pants, and dresses that do just as well at work as they do a night out. Prices can feel a bit high for certain pieces, so your best bet is to wait for the sales.

COS. H M-owned COS (an acronym for “collection of style”) launched in the US a few years ago with an online shop and several brick-and-mortar spots, accelerating the heartbeats of art directors, gallery owners, and conceptual architects across the nation. The aesthetic is minimal but forward-thinking, in fabrics that last and at prices that aren’t astronomical.

Everlane. One of the early pioneers of the cut-out-the-middleman movement (also known as the hot buzz-phrase, direct-to-consumer ) Everlane has grown far beyond the basic tees it started out with. Their successful strategy of slowly rolling out new products has cemented the brand as a go-to destination for classics; the company’s shoe collection is especially good, with made-in-Italy leather loafers coming in under $200.

Genuine People. San Francisco-based newcomer Genuine People seems to have something in the new arrivals section everyday. The husband-and-wife-run brand skews slightly more conceptual than your average fast fashion brand (while still being totally wearable), with prices hovering around $100 per piece.

Need Supply Co. Need Supply is one of the best true boutiques online (its brick and mortar is in Richmond, Virginia), offering a host of brands at a variety of price points, starting off with relatively affordable picks from brands like Black Crane. C/MEOCollective. Stelen. and Toit Volant. Launched this past spring, the brand’s in-house line Need is a great bet for wear-everyday basics.

Zara. Okay, real talk: Where would our wardrobes be without Zara? The Spanish-based retailer turns out thoughtful iterations of trends quickly and is always reliable for statement outerwear that looks grown up and a really solid selection of shoes and work-appropriate dresses.

Never Pay Retail

The top (legit) online consignment shops and discount destinations.

The Outnet. From the people behind Net-a-Porter comes one of the best places to shop for marked-down designer — if it weren’t for the reduced prices listed under each garment, you probably wouldn’t even notice you were on discount site. Plus, c risp product photography, trend-based styling guides, and a reliable customer service desk are all there to guide your purchases.

The Real Real. The site’s tagline of “authenticated luxury consignment” sums it up pretty well: This is the number one spot to shop pre-owned designer goods on the web — we’re talking Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel at up to 90% off.

Vestaire Collective. Sébastien Fabre’s hyper-curated re-sale marketplace doesn’t just stock verified designer goods in perfect condition, but they’re all right on-trend, too. It’s like e-Bay for people with good taste.

Yoox. Yoox is a massive luxury brand discount site, best navigated with many filters and plenty of time to click around. There are hundreds and hundreds of brands to shop — seriously, check out this designer index — making it nearly impossible to leave without a full cart.

Although online retailers theoretically have unlimited trading areas, they need to know where to look for customers.

Online retailing is far and away the fastest growing retail sector in the United States, with overall growth of about 15% in the past year and with categories such as apparel and footwear up by more.1 Internet retailing currently represents approximately 8% of U.S. retail sales, and in many countries it’s an even larger percentage. Forrester Research expects that from 2010 to 2015 online retail sales in China will more than triple, to about $160 billion.

What’s driving the growth, and to what extent do the principles of success for online retail differ from those of traditional brick-and-mortar retail? Internet retailing expansion is being fed by two forces: (1) traditional retailers are getting their “Internet acts” together, and (2) “pure play” retailers are becoming increasingly innovative. Consumers are now at least willing to consider purchasing more categories of products online than before. Many are expanding from an early emphasis on items such as books and CDs (which can be specifically described online in terms such as title, number of pages and shipping time) to other types of merchandise such as fashion apparel and gourmet food (which are characterized by “nondigital” attributes such as the fit and feel).2

Traditional and Internet retailing differ in two critical ways. First, in theory at least, Internet retailers have “unlimited” trading areas.3 Second, and less obvious, while traditional retailers can identify and target customers with relative ease (most customers either work or live within a few miles of the store), Internet retailers without physical stores find this much more difficult to do. Many Internet retailers have trouble getting noticed and acquiring customers. Indeed, having an unlimited trading area can be a mixed blessing: There are no straightforward rules about where to look for customers. As a result, some Internet retailers are making small forays into traditional retailing, using strategies that include pop-up stores, kiosks and partnerships with well-known retailers.

The fashion eyewear company Warby Parker’s strategy to get products in front of customers includes “pop-up” stores and a free home try-on program.

    Agree, online retailing is growing fast. When addressing the leading question: How can companies increase their online sales. it’s interesting that there’s no mention of the importance of online customer service in this article. With online research and comparison shopping now the norm for techno-savvy consumers, Internet retailers have a huge opportunity to proactively support their customers online. The use of proactive chat (a proactive invitation to connect with an agent) can be an excellent way to help customers while they are actively looking. Studies have shown that online chat increases sales. Having online customer service channels readily available with the click of a mouse can also reduce shopping cart abandonment. We have seen impressive sales increases from our own contact center clients as a result of proactive online customer support.

    Perhaps my comments on this article are about two years late and may not get much notics but I find the findings in the article fascinating. I have found identical insights while working with a specialty retailer. Some of these insights have been very effectively used by the retailer to predict response rates of customers in zip codes with preference isolation.
    Our predictive models incorporate most of the findings in the article in classifying customers by propensity to buy and estimation of the increase in amount bought by these customers. Thus we are able to predict with a high degree of accuracy the return on investment of a campaign well before execution of the campaign.

    The current coursera.org class on introduction to marketing from the wharton school of business is a great place to get introduced to these same priciples.
