HVAC Leak Detection

Hvac leak detection can be one of the hardest parts of being an Hvac Technician. Some refrigerant leaks will stand out at you, sometimes you can see traces of oil around the compressor, indicating a refrigerant leak, or sometimes you can smell the gas and pin point it from there. But what about those tiny leaks that only seem to grow over the years.

You could have purchased a new system 2 years ago, and it may have only lost a pound of refrigerant. That refrigerant leak could be getting bigger and bigger as the years go by, but you just keep paying to have refrigerant added to the system. 5 years go by and the refrigerant leak gets bigger, to the point that it will only hang on a couple days and freeze the system up, or damage the compressor, or whatever. Let’s say the freon leak was in the evaporator coil. over 5 years from installation, that coil is out of warranty. Now the customer, or YOU if you are the customer, have to fork over a heck of a lot more money to get it replaced.

HVAC Leak Detection

I’m going to cover some of the methods that I use for refrigerant leak detection. I won’t be covering gas leaks as I don’t deal with that type of HVAC and don’t want to lead anyone in the wrong direction. These methods should only be performed by those that work in the HVAC field.

Heating and air conditioning is a very technical field and every situation is different, thus this article should be used as information purposes only per our sites disclaimer .

System is Out of Refrigerant, or Close to It

For this situation I wouldn’t even pull out my refrigerant leak detector. I would first look at the most obvious spot, because if a system is completely flat on Freon, then 9 times out of 10 it’s going to be outside at the condensing unit. I would first look around the compressor for any signs of oil. Then fill the system up with about 200lbs of dry nitrogen. You should be able to hear the leak hissing when examining all of the HVAC components.

Refrigerant Leak Detectors

When HVAC leak detection gets difficult, this is when it’s time to pull out your refrigerant leak detector. There are two types that I like to use and they are the heated diode type and the infrared type leak detector. Both work good, but remember if you are an air conditioning technician in training, don’t go cheap when buying a leak detector, you get what you pay for.

Infrared Leak Detectors

I like the Fieldpiece SRL2K7 Infrared Leak Detector . It gets great reviews from some of the professionals over at Hvac-Talk.com Though this type of refrigerant leak detector is not for everyone, and can be a little tricky to use if you are used to using the heated diode type. The advantage of this type of technology is that the sensors will last about 10 years. They trigger on refrigerant concentration, so a sweeping motion must be used with this type of leak detector. The only disadvantages I have with infrared leak detectors is that they are more expensive. But then again you get what you pay for.

Heated Diode HVAC Leak Detectors

The most famous one and talked about the most is the H10. Works great on sniffing out R-22 and 134A refrigerant leaks. 410A not so much, especially is they are very, very small leaks. I have heard good things about the D-Tek leak detector though, which has been upgraded to detect 410A accurately. If I were to buy another refrigerant detector it would be the D-Tek just because most the guys I work with use it and love it.

There are leaks that can occur in evaporator and condensing coils that just will not trigger on some leak detectors. Either that or they just take too long to find. One option that will save you time, and will 100% pinpoint your leak (unless line set is underground) is the dye leak detection test.

Dye kits will consist of dye cartridges, a UV flashlight and glasses. You basically inject the dye into the system while it is running, and let the dye cycle for a couple of days. Return with your UV flashlight and glasses and the dye will light up where the refrigerant leak is present.

One of the most efficient ways to pinpoint small refrigeration leaks. The drawbacks to this is it can be pretty messy. Wear gloves, and make sure you have the proper stuff to clean up the mess you will make, which is usually included in the dye kits.

3 Component Isolation Test with Nitrogen

Last but not least, is the 3 component nitrogen test. In commercial applications this could be more than 3 components but this article is focused on residential Hvac leak detection. This is performed by recovering the remaining refrigerant in the system. Braze the suction line and liquid line together at the air handler, the condensing unit, and then the line set.

You will also need 3, ¼” shraeder valve stems brazed into these connections, as you will be filling them up with nitrogen at about 150 psi (some go higher but I wouldn’t recommend going over 150psi). Use soap bubbles to ensure that you brazes are good, once confirmed, wait a couple days then come back and check all of your gauges to see which one lost pressure.

As I have said this will be a situational decision you will have to make, as a technician or as a customer. Hands on is the best Hvac Training you can get and will have to learn how to make the best decisions on how you are going to apply HVAC leak detection through experience.

In our society, we place tremendous value on the care we give our pets. They become like members of the family. Thus, losing a beloved animal friend can be a terrible time for the whole family. It is natural to want to protect your children from painful experiences. However, most kids will be able to adjust to the loss of a pet if your approach is honest, gentle, and simple. This article will describe the grief process. specifically as children may experience it, and will offer several tips on how to help children cope with the death of a pet.

The most well-known grief expert is Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, who is the author of On Death and Dying. In her book, she outlines several stages of grief. Denial and Isolation; Anger; Bargaining; Depression; and Acceptance. For adults, these stages actually may be experienced simultaneously, appear in a different order, or some may be skipped all together. For children, the stages of grief may be even less clear, because their comprehension differs from adults. However, never assume that a child is too old or too young to grieve.

Grief is a process, not an event. It takes time. To help your children grieve in a healthy way, be honest about your own sorrow, and don t try to hide it. This will help your children feel less alone, and you can model a healthy way of dealing with sad feelings. Never criticize a child for tears, or tell them to be strong. NEVER tell children how they should feel. It may help to explain that when we really love someone, even though we are separated by death, our loved ones never really go away because we always have loving memories.

Keep in mind that the emotional reaction to the death of a pet may depend on the degree of the child s involvement with the animal. Take the time to discover what each child is experiencing by asking specific questions about their thoughts and feelings. Don t assume that you know. You can help your child to celebrate the life and good memories of your pet by looking through photo albums to stimulate special stories and funny memories. Both a good laugh and a good cry can be therapeutic. Children (and adults) can often benefit from some kind of ritual or ceremony. The pet, or its ashes, can be buried or scattered. Children can be reminded that life always continues, and that their pet will make things grow. If your pet is cremated, you can scatter some wildflower seeds along with the ashes, so what grows will be a tribute to the life of the pet. Some children may want to bury the pet with a beloved toy, or with a note they have written, or with a favorite picture (keep a copy). Or, some children will prefer to keep these things for themselves as reminders of good times. There are no rights or wrongs.

Depending on your child s age, there are some useful guidelines for discussing your pet s death. Two and three year olds are not likely to have an understanding of death. They should be told that their pet has died and will not return. They should be reassured that it has nothing to do with what they have said or done. Common reactions may include a temporary loss of speech and some general distress. It should be temporary, and often a child in this age range will readily accept another pet in place of the one that has died. With ANY child of ANY age, NEVER use the phrase, put to sleep. Young children can misinterpret this phrase, which suggests an adult s denial of the death, and they can develop fears of bedtime. Similarly, suggesting to a child that God has taken the pet can cause the child to become angry at the higher power and create conflict and confusion in the child.

Young children are very concrete in their thinking, and perceive the world through their senses. They may miss different things about your pet than you would expect, such as smell, sound, or tactile sensations. When talking to your children, you do not have to add a lot of details. Children may ask questions repetitively. Do not feel that you need to say more each time; their searching is part of the grieving process. Simply answer the questions, repeatedly if needed. If they want to know more, they will ask. You can tell if a child is really listening or just appearing to listen for your benefit (e.g. fidgeting, little eye contact).

Children ages four to six have some understanding of death, but are likely to interpret it as some type of continued existence. They may believe the pet is living underground while continuing to eat, breathe, and play. Or, they may think the pet is just asleep. Children these ages may connect any anger they felt toward the pet (especially if the pet s behavior was problematic) with being responsible for the pet s death. This view should be refuted, because they may also translate this belief into responsibility for deaths of family or friends. Children these ages may also see death as contagious and begin to fear their own deaths. Gentle reassurance is most helpful. Children s grief during these ages may show up as bowel and bladder control problems, or problematic eating or sleeping. Several short discussions (as opposed to a marathon parent-child talk) that allow the child to freely express feelings can help clear these problems up.

Seven to nine year olds can appreciate the permanence of death. While they do not tend to fear their own deaths, they may develop concerns about the deaths of their parents. They may also develop curiosities about death in general. The best approach is frank, honest, simple responses. Grief in children these ages may manifest itself in school problems, learning problems, antisocial behaviors, aggression, or hypochondriacal concerns. They may also be clingy.

Offering choices when a pet dies is helpful to children. They can be offered choices about whether to bury or cremate, whether they want to be present at the burial or after, if there are any certain objects they would like to put in the grave, of if there is anything cherished of their pet s that they would like, such as a collar or favorite toy.

Adolescents tend to react to the loss of a pet similarly to adults. At times this can include an absence of display of emotion, but it does not mean that your teen is not experiencing grief.

Local libraries often have very good books that address topics of children and grief, and some address pet loss specifically (e.g. Catheaven and Dogheaven by Cynthia Rylant). Additionally, veterinarians are paying increasing attention to the emotional issues associated with having an ailing pet or losing a pet, and can often provide useful support and direction. There are several pet loss websites that may be helpful. They include http://www.lightning-strike.com ; www.cowpoke.com/Pages/Pethome.htm ; www.pet-loss.net/. If all else fails, there is a site owned by a counselor in Washington state that connects you to literally hundreds of pet loss links, and this site is www.petgrief.com .


Losing a pet can be an emotionally exhausting and overwhelming experience for the whole family. The most basic rules of thumb for helping your child deal with grief are being open and not concealing your own sadness; not telling children how to feel; answering questions simply and honestly, and repeatedly if needed; avoiding euphemisms such as put to sleep; and allowing each child to grieve in his or her own way.

If your child shows problematic reactions to loss of a pet (e.g. the manifestations described above go on for more than 2-4 weeks), you may wish to consider consulting your primary care physician for a referral to a licensed psychologist or family therapist for guidance.

    Contraindications: The LAP-BAND System is not recommended for non-adult patients, patients with conditions that may make them poor surgical candidates or increase the risk of poor results (e.g. inflammatory or cardiopulmonary diseases, GI conditions, symptoms or family history of autoimmune disease, cirrhosis), who are unwilling or unable to comply with the required dietary restrictions, who have alcohol or drug addictions, or who currently are or may be pregnant.

    Warnings: The LAP-BAND System is a long-term implant. Explant and replacement surgery may be required. Patients who become pregnant or severely ill, or who require more extensive nutrition may require deflation of their bands. Anti-inflammatory agents, such as aspirin, should be used with caution and may contribute to an increased risk of band erosion.

    Adverse Events: Placement of the LAP-BAND System is major surgery and, as with any surgery, death can occur. Possible complications include the risks associated with the medications and methods used during surgery, the risks associated with any surgical procedure, and the patient s ability to tolerate a foreign object implanted in the body. Band slippage, erosion and deflation, reflux, obstruction of the stomach, dilation of the esophagus, infection, or nausea and vomiting may occur. Reoperation may be required. Rapid weight loss may result in complications that may require additional surgery. Deflation of the band may alleviate excessively rapid weight loss or esophageal dilation.

    The Rainbow Bridge

    Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

    When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
    There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
    There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

    All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
    The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

    They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

    You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

    Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.

    On Monday evenings all across the globe we light candles in memory of our pets who have gone on to Rainbow Bridge. It is a very healing ritual with no adherence to any religion or creed, just a simple lighting of candles to bring us all together.
    While there is an on-line Ceremony in our Chat Room every Monday, the Candle Ceremony does not have to be done on-line. Each of us can light our candles in our own way, and privately, but since we share a common love and since most of us do light them at the same time, we are joined in love and in spirit.

    The following information is provided to educate those unfamiliar with the concept of loss prevention across the retail industry. The information below is by no means all-inclusive and is provided solely as an introduction to loss prevention.

    What is Loss Prevention?

    Loss Prevention is the concept of establishing policies, procedures and business practice to prevent the loss of inventory or monies in a retail environment. Developing a program around this concept will help you to reduce the opportunities that these losses can occur and more specifically, work to prevent the loss rather than solely be reactive to them after they occur.

    Why does a retailer need to understand loss prevention?

    When a retailer experiences a loss, they are losing direct, to the bottom line profitability. Lost inventory requires replenishment at a cost to the retailer and lost monies cannot be replaced. The cost of these losses goes direct to the bottom line of a retail balance sheet causing lost profits. Profits that could have been used for new inventory, new store openings, employee benefits, increased earnings or improved EBIDTA.

    Why do you need a loss prevention function?

    Like any other part of your business a loss prevention function or established program helps make the business better. You have business functions around sales, marketing, human resources and more – why wouldn’t you have a business function around the protection of inventory and the prevention of losing it?

    The size of your loss prevention function, department or program depends on your business – the number of locations, what you are selling and the potential threats, risks and concerns facing your business. Having an established function that includes program elements and resources to establish, implement and monitor loss will make your business more profitable and less susceptible to certain losses.

    How do losses occur?

    Most losses occur in three categories; internal theft, external theft and through errors. Here are some brief descriptions of each category:

    Internal (Employee) Theft is the largest contributor to loss for most retailers, regardless of size or segment. Although some may wonder why employee theft would be the largest category of loss, hands down, every survey, study and comparison across segments has shown time and time again that those who steal from a business the most are employees.

    Employee theft occurs through many different methods. From simple merchandise theft to collusion with friends or other store employees, inventory losses by employees can easily deplete your profits (and the merchandise available for sale to customers). The point of sale (register) brings with it many other forms of employee theft. Simply removing money from the till to elaborate “conversion frauds” that include refund, void or discount thefts, point of sale theft can often cause a “double-dip effect” where you lose money and inventory simultaneously through a single incident.

    External Theft is often caused by shoplifting, break-ins, robberies or other acts by outside sources. Although it does not cause as much loss overall compared to internal theft, shoplifting and external theft most certain causes a substantial amount of loss annually to the retail industry. Controlling external theft requires a commitment to educating your employees on good customer service, awareness to the signs of a potential loss and how to best protect the store and inventory against external loss. This requires the establishment of procedures and training in areas such as; shoplifting prevention, robbery awareness, safety and how to handle various situations dealing with people. What security measurements you have in place within your retail location can also greatly assist you in your efforts against external loss (although not always).

    The last major area of caused loss in the retail environment is through Errors. Often considered paperwork errors, these mistakes can contribute upwards of over 15%-20% of a retailer’s annual loss. Ironically, most of the errors seen in retail are employee-caused, thereby making a retailer’s employee perhaps the highest contributor to the business loss every year!

    Errors can occur anywhere – from checking in shipments, to ringing on the register to transferring merchandise. These errors can include the inaccurate counting of merchandise to the improper discounting or accounting of a sale or tender. Simple mistakes caused over and over again have resulted in thousands of dollars lost to a single retail establishment.

    How do I know if I may have a loss prevention problem?

    Losses can be caused by many different reasons and through a variety of methods. How you know you may have a problem is to look for possible symptoms that the business is not being profitable. Here are some questions you can ask to see if you may have a loss prevention problem:

    • Your cost of goods or food costs are increasing but your sales are staying the same or decreasing
    • You notice empty containers, hangers or missing items throughout your store
    • Employees are reporting shoplifting issues or concerns
    • You have been the victim of a robbery over the past year (robbers often look for easy targets)
    • You are losing inventory but no one mentions any shoplifting or theft events (possible employee theft)
    • One employee reports shoplifting events but nobody else is witness to these events
    • Sales are down consistently when a certain employee works
    • Your cash drawer never balances and has small overages and shortages
    • A certain employee has a high number of refunds, voids or no-sales and not the only employee authorized to handle these transactions
    • Friends hanging around of asking for a certain employee

    One unhappy employee can rain financial havoc. According to Hayes International, the average dishonest employee lifts $808.09 worth of merchandise before apprehension.

    Imagine 10 such employees running amok through sporting goods in a single month. You begin to see why retailers are investing record numbers in recruiting and training private security officers and store detectives.

    Dishonest employees are not alone. Shoplifting, once a crime committed mostly by allowance-short teens and the occasional kleptomaniac, is now a lucrative branch of organized crime.

    Indeed, hard economic times have driven criminal rings to take up organized theft inside large retail chains. One recent University of Florida study on retail crime found a dramatic increase in the average dollar loss per incident. In 2003, $265 was the average loss per theft incident. By 2005 that had grown to $854 per incident. These days the total rings in well over $1,000.

    University of Florida criminologist Dr. Richard Hollinger, who has directed the National Retail Security Survey for more than 16 years, believes that organized retail theft (ORT) is the most likely cause of the dramatic per-incident increase in retail theft.

    “ORT, in which criminals work in organized groups to steal merchandise from stores or warehouses, is a growing problem for retailers,” says Hollinger. “The average loss per ORT incident is now more than $46,000. These crime rings work in small organized groups and they can do a lot of damage in very little time.”

    According to criminologists, most organized shoplifting rings have at least one “inside man.” It’s his or her job to spot or fabricate weaknesses in store security. Once a weakness is identified, thieves buzz in. Their job: strip away expensive merchandise as quickly as a storm of locusts.

    Careers in Criminal Justice — Loss Prevention Hot

    Shoplifting and employee theft are big enough problems that many large retail chains now maintain their own internal police departments. Never think police who work in retail loss prevention, known by some as mall cops, are ill-trained or ill-equipped.

    Many retail police departments are both better staffed and better equipped to detect and deter theft than your average city police department. Increasingly, retail giants rely on their own criminal justice teams to keep theft under control.

    If you’ve ever dreamed of a career in the criminal justice field, there’s never been more demand. The private sector in particular is bracing for a hiring boom as hard economic times cause retail and corporate crime to escalate.

    Want to work as a security officer, loss prevention expert, private detective or video crime surveillance officer? Don’t just apply at your local sheriff’s office. Think big. Think corporate. TJ Maxx and Wal-Mart employ more retail theft and loss specialists than all the local government agencies combined.

    Private firms such as ADT Security, which sponsored the University of Florida retail crime survey used in this article, also train, employ and place private police and security forces.

    Online Criminal Justice Degrees — Loss and Private Security

    Long gone are the days when being a private security officer required only physical muscle and a pair of shoes with thick gum soles. Today’s criminals employ intelligence to defeat technologically advanced theft deterrence systems.

    Private police must develop equally powerful mental muscle.

    One of the best general criminal justice bachelor’s major for becoming a loss specialist is criminology. However, to really succeed in this justice career field, you may need to beef up your knowledge base. Forensic psychology and cyber crime or computer forensics are two areas where demand is sky-rocketing and salary levels are equally high and rising.

    “There is new technology out there for combating organized retail theft, and we are seeing more and more retailers asking for it,” says Rex Gillette, vice president of retail national accounts for ADT Security. “Retailers are especially interested in new intelligent camera systems that pick up unusual behaviors or patterns and can alert store employees to possible organized crime activities.”

    According to Gillette, 40 percent of retail chains plan to increase their use of video recording and video monitoring over the Internet in an effort to thwart organized retail crime in the coming decade.
