Free and Open-Source Tool for
Social Network Analysis

Social Network Visualizer (SocNetV) is a cross-platform, user-friendly free software application for social network analysis and visualization. With SocNetV you can:

  • Draw social networks with a few clicks on a virtual canvas, load field data from a file in a supported format (GraphML . GraphViz . Adjacency. EdgeList, GML, Pajek. UCINET. etc) or crawl the internet to create a social network of connected webpages.
  • Edit actors and ties through point-and-click, analyse graph and social network properties, produce beautiful HTML reports and embed visualization layouts to the network.
  • Standard graph and network cohesion metrics, such as density . diameter . geodesics and distances . connectedness . eccentricity . clustering coefficient . reciprocity, etc.
  • Matrix routines: Adjacency plot, Laplacian matrix, Degree matrix, Cocitation, etc
  • Advanced measures for social network analysis such as centrality and prestige indices (i.e. eigenvector and closeness centrality. betweenness centrality. information centrality. power centrality. proximity and pagerank prestige).
  • Fast algorithms for community detection. such as triad census . clique census ,etc.
  • Structural equivalence analysis, using hierarchical clustering. actor similarities and tie profile dissimilarities, Pearson coefficients.
  • Layout models based either on prominence indices (i.e. circular, level and nodal sizes by centrality score) or on force-directed placement (i.e. Eades Spring Embedder. Fruchterman-Reingold. etc) for meaningful visualizations of the social networks.
  • Multirelational network loading and editing. Load a social network consisting of multiple relations or create a social network on your own and add multiple relations to it.
  • Random network creation using various random network generation models (Barabási–Albert Scale-Free. Erdős–Rényi. Watts-Strogatz Small-World. d-regular, ring lattice, etc)
  • Famous social network analysis datasets. i.e. Padgett’s Florentine families.
  • Built-in web crawler to automatically create “social networks” from links found in a given initial URL.
  • Comprehensive documentation. both online and inside the application, which explains each feature and algorithm of SocNetV in detail.

The program is Free Software, licensed under the GNU General Public License 3 (GPL3) .

    This is in our opinion, one of the nicest Win32 GUI-based trap receiver programs available, and it is 100% free. You can specify many actions to take upon receiving a trap, including exploding (forward to other destinations), logging, program kick-start and of course sending SMTP messages. You can extract trap variables, and import them into command lines and environment variables, making Trap Receiver quite flexible. Please try it. You will find it as a great way to manage and action incoming SNMP traps, even if you don’t have a full fledged SNMP NMS. Get it here.

    Trap Generator – Network Computing Technologies

    Also from NCT, this Win32 command line program allows you to send traps. Use it in conjunction with MRTG (call it from a batch file, or spawn a system process from PERL) and you can easily make:

    • MRTG generate an SNMP trap upon a threshold breach. Include information about the system polled by MRTG inside the trap data stream (system name, low disk/memory space, high CPU/NIC usage, etc.).

    Then, using Trap Receiver (above), you can:

    • Process that trap (on another system, or on the MRTG system itself) and generate log files, forward the trap to another system and/or send email alert messages.

    Open source software to build private and public clouds

    Note that we never really had a clear name for the XAPI project. The project was initially named after XCP, which is essentially a distribution of the Hypervisor, the XAPI toolstack and various other components. Later, the project also delivered packages into Linux distributions. This has created some confusion in the community! To make this clearer, the project team proposes to name the project after the XAPI toolstack. In other words, the project would be named after the codebase instead of one deliverable that the project produces.

    What is the XAPI Project?

    The XAPI project is a sub-project (or team) of the Xen Project effort that develops the enterprise ready XAPI toolstack. The hypervisor used with the XAPI toolstack consolidates server workloads, enables savings in power, cooling, and management costs and thus contributing to environmentally sustainable computing, an increased ability to adapt to ever-changing IT environments, an optimized use of existing hardware, and an improved level of IT reliability.

    The XAPI team also develops tooling, agents and libraries that are needed to operate a XAPI based system.

    What is XAPI?

    The Xen Project Management API (XAPI ) is:

    • A Xen Project Toolstack that exposes the XAPI interface. When we refer to XAPI as a toolstack, we typically include all dependencies and components that are needed for XAPI to operate (e.g. xenopsd).
    • An interface for remotely configuring and controlling virtualised guests running on a Xen-enabled host. XAPI is the core component of XenServer and XCP .

    Getting XAPI

    The XAPI team delivers XAPI as packages into Linux distributions. You can also get XAPI is an out-of-the box installable ISO from XenServer.org (and older version of XAPI from this website through XCP). XAPI can be obtained in the following ways:

    • XAPI is delivered as a source distribution by the XAPI project (see downloads ). XAPI source releases are the basis for other XAPI deliverables.
    • XAPI toolstack packages in Linux (or XAPI packages) enable you to build an XenServer-like environment from packages that are distributed via your host operating system’s package manager. XAPI packages are only available from supported Linux distributions (currently Debian and Ubuntu). Using XAPI packages provides more flexibility in tailoring your environment to your needs, but comes at the cost of less functionality and a more complex set-up. For more information see XAPI for Debian based distributions and XAPI variants.
    • In June 2013, XenServer was fully open sourced. which means you can get an source distribution of XAPI from XenServer.org. Note that this removed the need to deliver the XCP as a separate open source distribution on this website (also see FAQ ).
    • Before June 2013, XenServer was not fully open sourced and a subset of XenServer called XCP was made available for download from this website. The Xen Project website will continue to host these binaries, but new binaries will not be made available on this site (also see FAQ ).     How to create a secure incremental offsite backup in Linux with Duplicity #linux #offsite #backup

    If you maintain mission-critical data on your server, you probably want to back them up on a remote site for disaster recovery. For any type of offsite backup, you need to consider encryption in order to avoid any unauthorized access to the backup. In addition, it is important to use incremental backup, as opposed to full backup, to save time, disk storage and bandwidth costs incurred in ongoing backup activities.

    Duplicity is an encrypted incremental backup tool in Linux. Duplicity uses librsync to generate bandwidth/space-efficient incremental archives. It also uses GnuPG to encrypt and/or sign backup archives to prevent unauthorized data access and tampering.

    In this tutorial, I will describe how to create a secure incremental offsite backup in Linux with Duplicity .

    Install Duplicity on Linux

    To install Duplicity on Debian, Ubuntu or Mint:

    $ sudo apt-get install duplicity python-paramiko

    To install Duplicity on CentOS or RHEL, first enable EPEL repository. and run:

    $ sudo yum install duplicity python-paramiko

    To install Duplicity on Fedora:

    $ sudo yum install duplicity python-paramiko

    Create a Secure Incremental Remote Backup via SCP

    To create a secure and incremental backup of a local folder (e.g.

    /Downloads), and transfer it to a remote SSH server via SCP, use the following command. Note that before proceeding, you must enable password-less SSH login to the remote SSH server first.

    When you create a remote backup of given data for the first time, Duplicity will create a full backup, and ask you to set an initial GnuPG passphrase for encryption. Subsequent runs of Duplicity will create incremental backups, and you need to provide the same GnuPG passphrase created during the first run.

    Create a Secure Incremental Remote Backup in Non-interactive Mode

    If you do not want to be prompted to enter a passphrase, you can set PASSPHRASE environment variable, prior to running Duplicity as follows.

    If you do not want to pass a plain-text passphrase in the command-line, you can create the following backup script. To be more secure, make the script readable to you only.

    Create an Incremental Remote Backup Without Encryption

    If you do not need a secure backup, you can disable encryption as follows.

    Verify the Integrity of a Remote Backup

    For critical data, it is probably a good idea to verify that a remote backup was successful. You can check whether or not the local and remote volumes are in sync, by using the following command.

    Note that when using “verify” option, you need to reverse the order of local and remote folders; specify the remote folder first.

    Restore a Remote Backup

    In order to restore a remote backup locally, run the following commnad:

    To successfully restore a remote backup, the specified restore destination directory (e.g. Downloads_restored) must not exist locally beforehand.

    Create a Secure Incremental Remote Backup via FTP

    Besides SCP, Duplicity also supports several other protocols including FTP.

    If you encounter the following error, this means that you did not install SSH2 protocol library for python.

    To fix this error, install the following.

    If you encounter the following error, it is because you did not set up password-less ssh login to a remote backup server. Make sure that you do, and retry.
