LASIK Eye Surgery Procedures

LASIK procedures are so popular because they allow not only more freedom from glasses and contacts, but also the chance to see better than you would with corrective eyewear. There are several types of LASIK eye surgery treatments, and your surgeon will determine which one is best for you, depending on your individual needs.

LASIK treatments can correct some of the most common vision problems, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Our physicians use state-of-the-art eye-mapping technology to analyze the problems with your eyesight as well as each eye’s unique irregularities. After determining if you’re eligible for LASIK, your surgeon will recommend the LASIK procedure that makes the most sense for achieving your optimal vision.

Request a Free LASIK Evaluation

This may include:

  • Traditional LASIK Surgery (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is the most frequently performed laser vision correction procedure. A hinged flap is created on the eye s surface, and an excimer laser is used to reshape the underlying corneal tissue, so that the eye s focusing power is improved.
  • PRK: Photo Refractive Keratectomy Laser Eye Surgery Similar to LASIK surgery, PRK surgery involves using a laser to reshape the cornea. But instead of creating a flap, a thin outer layer of the cornea is polished to allow the laser access to reshaping the eye PRK may be a better alternative for certain eye conditions.
  • Custom Wavefront Optimized LASIK Surgery WaveLight® refractive technology combines the latest surgical advancements into a LASIK procedure personalized for your ideal vision. This system offers a unique procedure that actually accounts for the natural shape of your eye as it corrects your cornea. As a result, LASIK with WaveLight® refractive technology can help preserve the quality of your vision, ensuring your eyes are at their most natural and their most useful.

You will receive some simple instructions to follow in the days leading up to your LASIK treatment, including not wearing contact lenses for a period of about a couple of weeks to a few days. Your surgeon will discuss with you what to expect during and after your laser eye surgery procedure, including recovery time.

LASIK Surgery with Diabetes? #lasik #surgery #diabetes, #lasik #surgeon, #best #lasik #surgeon

#

Question: I have a question about having LASIK surgery if I have diabetes. I am a type one diabetic, would I be a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery?

Answer: Type I Diabetes is not an absolute contraindication for having LASIK Eye Surgery but there are several considerations to be aware of. Type I Diabetes is uusually diagnosed in children and young adults. As with anyone having LASIK or any type of Laser Eye Surgery for Laser Vision Correction your prescription must be stable. Typically refractive stability should be demonstrated over 1-2 years AND for anyone with Diabetes it would be important to make sure that there was refractive stability through the range of blood glucose levels experienced by the patient. That is, the patient should have pretty tightly controlled blood glucose levels.that do not cause any visual fluctuations. A thorough evaluation of the retina should document the presence and extent of any Diabetic Retinopathy so as not to confuse the visual results and outcomes of LASIK with any vision limitations caused by the retina. A careful evaluation of the cornea is done as part of any LASIK evaluation but specific observation of the corneal basement membrane is important in Diabetic patients as sometimes they have less than optimum basement membrane health and this might warrant recommendation of a different Laser Eye Surgery procedure for vision correction. MANY Diabetic patients elect to have LASIK and do so quite successfully. The key is to find the best LASIK Surgeon in your area and schedule a consultation. They will confer with your Internist or Endocrinologist to make sure that you get the best possible result.

LASIK Vision Correction

Making the right choice for your LASIK procedure can make all the difference in the world… in both your vision and your life. At Berkeley Eye Center, we know choosing to have LASIK is a huge decision.

See Clearly Without The Hassle Of Contacts Or Glasses

Here’s more good news. Our LASIK procedure takes only a few minutes to complete and patients remain awake and comfortable during the entire procedure. We offer the latest laser technology and techniques by uniquely qualified surgeons who have performed tens of thousands of procedures combined. As you continue your research about LASIK and vision correction procedures, here are a few more facts to keep in mind about Berkeley Eye Center:

94% of LASIK Patients see 20/20 or Better*

* AMO clinical study of 300 iLASIK patients.

  • Short recovery time. Patients can have surgery on a Friday and return to work on Monday. This is a result of faster laser treatment times, proper pre-op procedures, minimally-invasive laser treatments and a proven regimen of post-op care.
  • Quick comfortable procedure. Using our advanced all-laser iLASIK technique, the actual laser treatment time is 60-seconds or less, with patients reporting little to no discomfort.
  • A LASIK Partner You Can Trust. Unlike corporate or discount LASIK providers, Berkeley Eye Center has been helping keep Texans focused for over 50 years. Our tradition of ‘Eye Care Excellence’ was founded on award-winning customer service, experienced surgeons you can trust and being an eye care provider you can count on for ALL of your eye care needs. While we won’t offer deep discounted pricing, we do offer all of our patients one price for state-of-the-art technology and in-house financing as well as some of the most-competitive rates by CareCredit and other organizations.

LASIK for Nearsighted, Farsighted Astigmatism

Each year, more than a million people undergo LASIK to surgically treat their nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism and become glasses-free. No more contacts or glasses, no more hassle! While LASIK is not typically used to correct presbyopia or age-related reading-vision in patients ages 45+, there are additional options such as monovision and exciting corneal inlays for patients age 45+ .

Your LASIK Experience

Our LASIK procedures are performed in the comfort and safety of a specially designed laser suite at Berkeley Eye Center. To help reduce possible risks and complications, factors such as humidity, temperature and overall air quality are closely monitored and maintained.

Upon arrival, you and your guest will be invited into our internal waiting room. You meet with the surgeon, who will provide a final exam and answer any questions you or your guest may have. The preparation and ‘relaxation’ takes the majority of time, then the laser correction begins – 60 seconds or less – in reality.

Step 1 – Pre-Op Exam Questions
Step 2 – LASIK pre-operative area to help you relax and prepare for your procedure
Step 3 – Enter Laser Suite for two-step procedure: flap-creation and laser correction.
Step 4 – Post-Op Exam Instructions – most patients exclaim they can already see!

Watch the above video to see the whole patient-experience.

Many of our guest waiting areas provide an optional ‘viewing room’ so the guest can remain outside of the sterile area, while watching the actual life-changing procedure!

Our Technology The Choice for iLASIK

When considering your vision correction procedure, it is important to understand exactly what kind of treatment you will receive. iLASIK is the combination of two lasers used during the vision correction procedure. Step one creates the flap with Intralase (iFS), step two reshapes the cornea with the VISX Star S4 laser.

Berkeley Eye Center is one of only a few providers across Houston who offer the iLASIK procedure.

Your LASIK Prescription – As Unique as Your DNA

Since the late 1990s, conventional LASIK has been the procedure of choice for surgeons worldwide in their effort to reduce and eliminate the public’s dependence on corrective eyewear. In conventional LASIK, the patient’s prescription is simply entered into the laser for treatment.

Today, leading surgeons, like our doctors, are taking LASIK to the next level with CustomVue™, a Wavefront-Guided Custom laser procedure approved by the FDA. During the CustomVue procedure, diagnostic information gathered during the WaveFront scanning process is fed directly into our VISX Star S4 eye-tracking laser.

Just like your fingerprint and DNA, the information fed into the laser is unique to your eyes only. Each of your eyes will receive its own custom laser procedure, where no two custom procedures in the world are identical.

For corneal reshaping, we use the VISX Star S4 eye-tracking laser with Iris Registration. Eye-tracking means that the laser shifts with the eye as it follows the landmarks on the eye. Iris Registration is a non-contact method for aligning the advanced CustomVue procedure. We are able to take photos of landmarks on each individual’s iris so that the laser correctly centers and aligns the treatment on the iris. With Iris Registration, there is no possibility of treating a wrong eye or the wrong patient.

Safety is Our Number One Priority

Flap Creation 5th Generation Intralase (iFS) Laser Techonology

Some practices still use a mechanical, bladed device called a microkeratome to create the flap. With the bladed style microkeratome there was an increased risk of complications such as corneal abrasions, irregular flaps, as well as button-hole flaps. The Intralase laser has 3x more flap stability than a microkeratome-created flap.

We are proud to include the 5th Generation iFS Laser now in all of our laser centers across the Greater Houston area. Ask your LASIK doctor for more information and which locations offer this technology.

Our Technology Has Proven Results

  • Faster visual recovery
  • Fewer dry eye symptoms
  • Over 5 million IntraLase procedures
  • 10+ years of research to improve safety and precision of LASIK
  • Allowed by NASA and the U.S. Military where precise vision is demanded

Before You Have LASIK

Updated February 24, 2016

If you are seriously thinking of having LASIK surgery to correct your vision, you most likely have a few concerns about the procedure. Even though the thought of waking up each morning with clear vision is exciting, several important factors must be considered. Before you sign up for LASIK, take some time to review the following information.

Are You a Good LASIK Candidate?

Not everyone is a good candidate for laser-vision correction.

There are several conditions that may disqualify you from undergoing the procedure. A good LASIK candidate must qualify for the procedure by meeting several requirements. A thorough eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist is a great place to start. Don t forget, LASIK is a life altering procedure. Although it is an extremely commonly performed eye surgery in the United States, that does not meet it is right for everyone. You might have a a vision problem that LASIK would treat easily, however, you lifestyle or even your personality may cause your doctor to hesitate recommending the procedure. If you meet the requirements of LASIK and are a good candidate for the procedure, laser eye-surgery preparation will begin.

Risks Involved with LASIK

Refractive surgery often produces great results; however, there are risks involved in any medical procedure.

Even if the percentage of patients with problems or complications is small, if a problem happens to you, those statistic do not mean a thing. Listen to your doctor and if he recommends something for you to do to your eyes before LASIK, take it seriously. If you are considering undergoing LASIK, it is important to know the possible complications and limitations that may occur.

Your Vision After LASIK

LASIK will almost certainly reduce your dependence on glasses and contact lenses, but there can be no guarantee that you will be able to achieve perfect vision without glasses. It is very common, though, for patients to demonstrate excellent vision during follow-up examinations after the procedure and discontinue the use of glasses or contacts immediately. As long as you have well defined goals and understand that LASIK is designed to lessen the dependence on glasses and not deliver superior vision in every aspect of your life, then your result will most likley be even better than expected.

Further LASIK Considerations

Changes in your vision after LASIK may or may not be permanent, as your eyes are still capable of changing internally. Most patients, though, are extremely pleased with their LASIK results.

Depending on the type of procedure being performed, LASIK usually costs between $2,500 to $6,000. LASIK costs have declined as the procedure has become more common. However, the technology used to deliver laser vision correction has increased in quality every year.

Depending on the type of laser being used, the facility and your particular vision problem, your procedure maybe more or less than the average.

Top 10 LASIK Surgeons

Being selected for a prestigious list featured in Forbes Magazine represents a major achievement, whether it’s the best small companies in America, technology’s top deal makers, the best U.S. colleges – or the top LASIK surgeons.

Last summer, Hoopes Vision was named One of the Top 10 Most Dependable Laser Eye Surgeons in the Country by Goldline Research. The list was published in the July 2008 issue of Forbes magazine.

Goldline Research is an independent market research fi rm that evaluates professional services on behalf of consumers nationwide. The organization conducted a rigorous review of LASIK vision care centers across the country and evaluated them on the basis of six important criteria: 10 or more years in practice; minimum of 25,000 laser vision correction procedures performed; certifi cation by the American Board of Ophthalmology; specialists in LASIK and Refractive Surgery; excellent references; and state of-the-art equipment.

Why is this important to you as a consumer? It means an unbiased third party has done the research necessary to qualify Hoopes Vision as a vision care practice that consistently delivers excellent results, has highly qualified and experienced surgeons and is committed to the best technology. It is a matter of having trust and confi dence in Hoopes Vision to surgically correct your vision for permanent, life-changing benefits.

According to Goldline Research, the company’s research guides are created to streamline the decision-making process for consumers by helping them identify the leading services providers in the country who can meet their needs.

The Goldline Research list is just one of many acknowledgements that Hoopes Vision has received in the past few years. Laser Vision Centers named Hoopes Vision one of the top 50 practices and top 100 surgeons in the country in 2001. Consumers’ Research Council of America named the practice one of America’s Top Ophthalmologists and Refractive Surgeons every year from 2004 through 2008. Wavelight, Inc. presented Dr. Hoopes with the prestigious Accento Award in 2005.

THE LASIK PROCEDURE
LASIK (Laser Assisted-in-situ Keratomileusis) is a fast and painless procedure to correct farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism with dramatic results.

The treatment of both eyes typically takes less than ten minutes—both eyes!

LASIK Safety and Effectiveness FDA Approved.

LASIK Step by Step

Step 1
First the eye is numbed with topical anesthetic. You are then reclined in a comfortable chair and positioned under the excimer laser. The doctor views your eye through a microscope on the laser.

Step 2
A flap is created using a microkeratome. The flap is about 1/5th the thickness of the cornea. This entire process takes about 10 seconds.

Step 3
The flap is then gently reflected, exposing the corneal bed. Using information from your prescription and other information gathered by your doctor, the excimer laser precisely and smoothly changes the cornea’s curvature. It is in this step that information from the wavescan would be used to provide the laser a more detailed analysis of your prescription should you elect to have Custom LASIK.

Step 4
After the laser treatment, the flap is replaced and held in place by the natural healing processes of the cornea.

OUR PATIENTS SAY.

“After visiting several doctors’ offices over the last few weeks, this place was a breath of fresh air. The assistant at the front desk was beyond courteous, friendly, and engaging.

I was seen very quickly by the doctor. She was very open, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. Once it was over, I was given a copy of both my prescriptions as well as a 90 day window to come back should I need to for anything, free of charge.

Being from NYC, most eye doctors acted as if it wasn’t your right to have your prescription so I was pleasantly surprised by this. All of this WITH free 90-day follow-up? This just doesn’t happen anymore. but it should. I highly recommend Master Eye Associates.”

“The doctor has been very helpful and patient as I experimented with several contact lenses covered by my insurance. She told me which ones she thought were good brands and then ordered them in my prescription. She was happy to see me after each trial to hear my review and check the fit. She even gave me an extra pair of lenses when I told her I was traveling-in case I dropped or lost my only other pair. It took 3 visits for me to find the right ones-and I ended up picking the brand I had before! But there wasn’t a note of irritation in her voice. She was happy to help, listen to me and even give me insurance tips.

Their online apt system is an added bonus because it makes it so easy to schedule.

I also appreciate that they are open until 6 pm. Overall, I would definitely recommend Master Eye Associates.”

“Doctor and staff were great, my wife and I were seen right away.

The doctor performed a thorough examination and explained everything in detail. The doctor performed the exam, explained her findings and gave us our prescriptions.

It was nice NOT to have the staff pressuring you to buy glasses from them. Since they don’t sell glasses, there was no high pressure sale tactics to endure.”
