7 Low-Cost Design Ideas for Small Retail Spaces

Neutral-colored furniture with accent pillows and accessories doesn t overwhelm shoppers. An end table creates a divider between displays at Cocobolo Interiors in Armonk, N.Y.

When Julie Owen bought Cocobolo Interiors in 2008, she set about adding more contemporary items to the Armonk, N.Y. shop. But with only 3,000 square feet, she struggled to figure out where to put her expanding line of furniture, lighting fixtures and accessories. Her solution: create sections within the shop and arrange the furniture the way customers might imagine it at home, using low bookcases and folding screens as dividers.

As Owen discovered, making the most of a small retail shop means being strategic about how you design the space and organize your merchandise. Here are seven other simple and affordable ways to maximize a small retail space:

1. Paint an accent wall. Painting one wall a bold color is an affordable and effective way to not only spice up the space, but also to make it look larger. A bold colored wall creates the illusion of receding in space, says Libby Langdon. HGTV design expert and author of Libby Langdon s Small Space Solutions (Knack, 2009). Putting colorfully printed fabric or wallpaper on one of your walls is another way to achieve the same effect, while adding eye-catching textures and patterns to your store.

An old bed serves as a space-saving and creative way to display tea towels along an orange accent wall at Poppyseeds in Stanwood, Wash.

2. Create window-like effects. Windows can open up a small space and make it seem larger. At Poppyseeds. a vintage decor and fashion accessory shop in Stanwood, Wash. the owners cut window spaces into the walls separating two small rooms to create a more airy feel. In another room, co-owner Marybeth Sande put white linen panels across an entire wall, creating the illusion of windows. Hanging drapes around tall, skinny mirrors is another way to create a window effect, Langdon says. That gives an illusion of more light and movement in a small space.

3. Think vertically. Displaying items on various levels maximizes space and is visually appealing to customers, says Jerry Birnbach. a Somers, N.Y. store-planning consultant. Hanging shelving at different levels is the easiest way to achieve this effect. You also can mount drapes and other items from the ceiling to the floor to draw the eye up and create the sense of a larger space, Langdon says.

4. Avoid a cluttered look. Owen managed to add more merchandise but avoid a cluttered look by using neutral colors, such as ivory and gray for furniture and larger items. She then accented the space with smaller brightly colored items like vases and pillows. She also makes sure not to crowd her merchandise too closely together. We try to make it look elegant and give it some space, she says.

5. Move beyond shelving. Shelving can be a very effective way to make the most of your wall space, but you can also find more creative, space-saving ways to display products. Instead of a big floor case for jewelry and other small items, Langdon recommends buying an old painting in an ornate frame and stretching the canvas in linen to create a giant corkboard to pin products on. At Poppyseeds, tea towels are displayed on an antique wrought iron headboard propped against a wall. The headboard takes up little space and adds character to the store.

6. Use open bookcases as dividers. Sectioning off areas of a small shop is challenging, but tall, open bookcases can be an effective way to divide the space, as well as display products and create an airy feel. Open bookcases are also flexible, allowing you to change both the layout and the merchandise easily.

7. Illuminate your space in different ways. Lighting is important in any retail shop, but it s particularly critical in tight quarters. If a corner of your store is not well lit, that square footage is as good as lost, Langdon says. She recommends using a combination of track lights, lamps, sconces and picture lights. This mixture will not only ensure that your entire space is well lit, but it also will add flair and variety. Picture lights are amazing. They give a wonderful glow, she says. Think in terms of layers of light.

10 Retail Marketing Ideas to Boost Sales

Savvy retailers know that maximizing profits means smart marketing; however, it can be challenging to devote as much time to marketing as you need in order to market more efficiently. To support that effort, we assembled ten retail marketing ideas to help bring increased sales and more loyal customers.

1. Track every marketing campaign
Do you know what your return on investment (ROI) was for the last marketing campaign you launched? If so, was the campaign a success? Did you set specific and measurable goals? It s important to set campaign goals and then develop mechanisms to track those goals for every marketing campaign you launch, online or off. What are you trying to accomplish with your campaign? Is it more visits to your website, revenue driven by purchases, online post purchase reviews?

Whatever your goal, do a post campaign check-in to measure performance so you can use that information to shape your next campaign. A big piece of strategy is knowing what not to do and if something doesn t work, you may choose to not do it again, or make some tweaks and retry it another time.

2.Free marketing opportunities
Do you work the social media sites your customers frequent? Do you place posters and flyers on community bulletin boards, or banners at busy intersections? Have you contacted other local companies who share your target customer base but don t directly compete with you to develop unique package plans in which all of you market and sell for each other? For example, your retail shop could partner with a restaurant and spa to offer a Mother s Day package: a gift from your shop, a trip to the spa, and dinner for two.

Free marketing ideas such as these abound; and yes, you might have to pay for printing but distribution can be had for free. You can also send these offers out via an email marketing campaign.

3.Repetition
Many retailers send a single direct-mail postcard and are disappointed by the results, never to market with postcards (or other direct-mail tools) again. That s a mistake, because repetition sells. You ve probably heard of the rule of seven – a customer has to see an offer seven times to buy. This doesn t mean you need to send seven different postcards, but two or three won t hurt, especially when used in conjunction with banners, flyers, ads, and digital marketing.

4. Follow-up
Do you follow up with your customers after they ve made purchases? Rewarding customers for their loyalty is a great way to build relationships and earn more sales. Send new customers a special gift, such as a ten percent off coupon (which you can track), to encourage them to visit again. Use these four ways to keep customers coming back again and again.

5.Become a resource
Never miss the opportunity to greet your customers and engage them with an open-ended question about how you can help them. You might ask who they re shopping for and what that person likes so you can make personalized suggestions. Help customers find the perfect gift (for others or themselves), and become a reliable resource for the future. Providing valuable content in the form of help, advice, tips and how-tos can also help your business stay top of mind with customers.

6. Employee training
You probably spend a lot of time training employees how to work the register, open and close, and keep items stocked – but how much time do you devote to training employees to sell? Training employees how to sell well is crucial to your success. When employees are knowledgeable, capable and efficient they can help keep your customers happy and loyal.

7.Test
To maximize your ROI; you should try to test multiple versions of your marketing materials against each other to see which performs best. Pick small segments of your mailing list to test your different versions on, then send the winning version to your entire list. This is also an effective strategy for direct mail, email marketing and landing pages.

8.Target
Do you know what traits are shared by your three best customers? If not, it will be difficult to target the people most likely to be your most profitable customers. Find out everything you can about your very best customers to develop a customer profile ; then, target your mailing lists to reach those who match those demographics. Once you have your best customers down, you can create multiple customer profiles for different types of customers for targeting purposes.

9.Build customer relationships
Personal interaction with customers is a great way to establish relationships and encourage long-term customer loyalty. Your marketing can be a natural extension of this, which means you don t always have to be selling. Send out thank you and birthday emails. anniversary greetings and other relationship building communications.

10.PR
Public relations and marketing might not be identical, but the end-goal is often similar: to make customers aware of your company, products, and services. When you have a new product, sale, hire, event, charitable contribution, or other newsworthy announcement, draft a quick press release to send to local newspapers, TV stations, radio stations, websites, and bloggers. You won t always earn coverage, but it only takes a few minutes to write a press release and email it to media members.

Getting covered just once in your local paper can be enough to boost sales. This 7 Tools to Get Free Publicity for Your Business post has more great ideas.

These ten simple but effective retail marketing tips should help you give your sales a boost and be more effective with your marketing.

How to start a clothes shop

What is a clothes shop?

Clothes are big business in Britain. Every year, fashion-conscious market spend billions on their wardrobe and to supply this extra large spending habit there is an equally burgeoning clothing retail sector.

Action point: Need a loan to start a business of your own? See how we can help here and here

In fact, there are as many different types of clothes shops as there are varieties of clothing from the large department stores such as Marks Spencer, high street chains like Zara, Topshop and New Look, to the thousands of independent stores that sell vintage, designer and emerging brands, scattered throughout the country.

So it may seem that this is a market made to measure for the budding entrepreneur. Unfortunately, it s not that simple. Clothing is also one of the most highly developed retail sectors in Britain and the established brands are frighteningly competitive. If you want to break into this market, you will have to look hard to find a gap and, even then, it will take a lot of work and resources to make it succeed.

So where are the gaps? How can a smaller clothes shop offer something that isn t already provided by the chains or larger stores? The key is specialisation. Generally the larger stores offer the greatest choice to shoppers; they have the space and resources to carry an extensive stock range and the purchasing power to offer that stock at low prices. The smaller, independent stores, on the other hand, can profit through specialising.

The crucial point is to identify a niche. This may centre on the style of clothing you sell or on the type of customer that you want to attract. For example, you may stock only suits, second-hand clothes or ethical brands. Alternatively, you may look to sell clothes to a particular group such as schoolchildren or extra large men. Whatever type of shop you eventually decide to open, one thing is certain you will have to put a lot of effort and money into making it work. It s a risky sector but if you get it right, the rewards can be high.

5 Powerful Low Cost Retail Marketing Ideas

If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn t thinking.

George S. Patton

Sometimes all it takes to create a powerful marketing program is to think up new ways to deliver benefits to your customers. In the event that you don t have enough time to think this week, I m offering you 5 new marketing ideas you can implement with just a bit of time, some basic communication efforts and no out-of-pocket spending. Sure, you may need to offer a discount here and there, but if you learn something from doing any of these 5 ideas, it will be worth it.

My objectives with these ideas are that they help increase foot traffic, increase loyalty, increase word-of-mouth, or some combination of any of the above. With each idea, I ll tell you why it will be beneficial to your retail store, give you an example (or two) of how others have done something similar, and a mention few things you need to think about to implement without significant problems springing up.

Create a card asking customers for online reviews

Why. It will help your search engine performance. Increasing your online reviews is being increasingly recognized by Google and other search engines as important content that searchers value. If some information has value to the searcher, then you can bet your bottom dollar that Google will find a way to capture that relevance in its search results.
Example. I helped one of my clients get established on Google Places, yelp, tripadvisor and other relevant directories. Now it plans to hand out a variation of this card to customers after completing their transactions. Easy peasy!

Create a combo product that provides a customer discount over buying items separately

Why. Increasing your average transaction amount is a great way to increase your overall revenue. Yes, you will reduce your margin a bit, but if you combine the products into a solution that makes sense for your customer, you will start to train them to spend more in your store each visit. Then your register will sound sweeter when it goes Ka-Ching!
Example. The classic example is of a Happy Meal, or any other fast food combo. When I worked for Clorox, we d sometimes bundle two different scents of Pine-Sol into a combo pack. If you have a caf , you could create a breakfast special that includes a large coffee and a pastry. Or if you have a deli, sandwich + chips + a beverage. If you have a women s boutique, maybe it s a handbag and hat ensemble. Get creative!

Create a customer photo contest

Why. It allows your proudest customers to showcase their talents, and if you pick your theme right, your products. It will also most likely result in you having lots of pictures of happy customers to share and reuse on your website, in marketing materials, or just displayed in your store. After all, a picture tells a thousand words.
Example: Pizza Orgasmica, a chain in San Francisco, hangs framed photos of customers and has a gallery on its website of customers who share pictures of them wearing branded t-shirts from around the world. George s Music in Berwyn Pennsylvania is running a photo contest though its Facebook page and asking fans and customers to Post a pic of you and your instrument to our Wall.

Bypass Groupon and announce your own group offer on your Facebook page

Why. Your Facebook fans will see the offer, but they will probably have to round up non-Facebook fans to bring in a group to your store. New customers introduced by current customers is a win-win for everybody.
Example. Tropisueno. a Mexican restaurant in San Francisco, has a standing group offer of free drinks for the person who brings in 5 additional friends. If you own or manage a restaurant, my recommendation is to announce a specific day and specific time frame when this offer can be redeemed (such as Happy Hour) so you can fill seats that normally are unoccupied.

Tweet a secret word that customers have to share in order to get a discount or t-shirt (with purchase of course)

Why. It keeps your customers engaged in your twitter feed, gets them more deeply involved in what you have to say through gaming mechanisms, and if you announce a secret word on random days, does not become a predictable way to get regular freebies (after all, people who only buy for free don t help you make money).
Example. Cold Fusion Gelato Store in Newport, RI

What downsides or challenges do you see about implementing any of these ideas?

Do you have interest in starting a retail business. Then here is a list of the best small retail business ideas you can start with little money .

It is not hard to come up with the top 10 small retail business ideas to start because retailing has been the core of business since ancient times. From the industrial age, jet age, the computer age and internet age; retail business has stood the test of time.

Even many of the world’s billionaires earned their 11-digit bank accounts through retailing of their world-class products. For instance, Sam Walton became a billionaire with Wal-Mart and Ingvar Kamprad became a billionaire with IKEA.

However, that does not mean you need to come up with globally competitive products to succeed in the retailing industry. You can carve a niche for yourself by focusing on one product variety or targeting a particular community or city.

So to help you get started, I decided to compile a list of the top 10 retail business ideas to start with the fastest Return-on-Income. But please bear in mind that you have to conduct your own feasibility study and write a business plan; so as to increase your chances of success.

10 Best Small Retail Shop Business Ideas Opportunities

Silk printing may be an ancient art but its lucrative nature is so modern. Selling printing clothes is the “in” thing because they always blend perfectly with every fashion trend. Even Nicki Minaj and other celebrities worship the printed fabric. Be warned that limiting your business to silk printing will cut your feasibility into half. Utilize some modern techniques like digital printing and embossing, so that you can join the race towards success.

Ask kids what’s their favorite snacks and they are likely to mention cupcake, thereby making it a perfect choice to be in my list of small retail business ideas to start. When somebody tells you that everybody loves cupcakes, just believe it. For vague reasons, cupcakes surpassed all the pastry counterparts in popularity and whether it is connected with the creative side of cupcake making or not, the thing is it still bound bring you queues of customers wanting to try out your sumptuous treat.

When there is gadget, there is always an accessory. They are like the shades and shoulder pads of Lady Gaga; they can never be separated. Because modern gadgets like tablets, cellphones, laptops and MP3 players are flooding the stores, they tend to be so generic that owners look for ways to be unique. What else can do the job better than buying accessories? As gadgets dominate the market, selling gadgets accessories will also continue to have a slot in the top 10 retail business ideas to start.

You do not need to wait for the Olympics every four years to start a sports supplies business. Sports enthusiasts and fans are always willing to spend their hard-earned money for a worthy product. Finding what they want will give you huge clientele in no time. After all, there are over 20 popular sports with worldwide appeal; and over millions of sport fans worldwide. The market is already there to exploit.

They say the world is overpopulated, which means more babies coming out by the second. Selling baby equipment and products is a lucrative business especially in the Western world. Considering this as one of the top 10 retail business ideas to start can never go wrong.

Many businessmen and business-minded investors have loads of ideas and sure-hit products to sell. The problem is, they have no time or wouldn’t mind doing the hard-selling themselves. Consignment enters the picture with neon sign above it stating money and nothing but money! As a consigner, all you need to do is to retail other people’s products and get your cut. Not a tedious venture for landing in the top 10 retail business ideas to start.

Online retailing can be classified according to the product being sold. Nonetheless, it is also generally categorized in the retail industry because of its mode of selling which is through the internet. It is an easy way of making money by selling (which technically makes it a form of modern consignment) other people’s products through your website and internet marketing strategy. This means that you have to do the rest, from marketing to promotions to delivery, to be an online retailer. You can be your one-man team eBay or a group. There are a lot of shopping portals and auction websites online that you can leverage on. Examples are Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Groupon, etc.

The green revolution is here and this is a perfect timing to place organic food selling in the top 10 retail business ideas to start. Why? The reason is because health buffs are now on the look for organic delicacies and products and as new diseases continue to appear. People are getting more health conscious; in fact, they are becoming cautious of what they eat. So you are assured of new customers faster than you expect it.

IKEA is the world’s largest furniture retailer founded by Ingvar Kamprad; but that doesn’t mean you can carve a niche and make money from selling furniture. Garage sale is for the amateurs. Retailing overhauled, used furniture and other house trinkets is one of the best ways to make big money. As a rule, you can sell groomed furniture at a double price than your capital. Remember that being old or new is not an issue when it comes to furniture, so this gives an advantage to you right away.

Who does not want to be perfect, or at least close to it. Avon ladies are passé and you have your own warrior to introduce new beauty products to the world – yourself. With the right mixture of catalogues, selling will just be a breeze as you laugh all the way to the bank.

As a final note, I want to let you know that the list of products you can retail is endless. You can sell just about anything, provided you have established the fact that there is demand for it. Consider each of these small business retail ideas thoroughly and I will see you at the top.

Business Ideas

The best way for a businessman to think of a productive business idea is to ensure that their creative processes are working fine through activities such as sports, reading, and painting. They can also get out of their comfort zones and spend some more time in cultivating their hobbies. When the mind is free and working properly, a businessman is in the best position to utilize his knowledge. They should not try forcefully to come up with a good business idea as such efforts normally deliver negative results.

Doing Business in India

While thinking of a business ideas, the entrepreneur should be aware of his limits as that aids in channeling the thought process in a proper direction. For example, if somebody is keen on setting up a computer business, but his proficiency is limited to word processing and surfing, then it will be hard for him to come up with a good business idea for a software product. Imaginative business ideas come only with experience and entrepreneurs need to realize it.

It is ideal to always have something that can be used for recording great business ideas that might occur when a businessman expects it the least. This helps the entrepreneur have a documentation of good ideas that can be developed later on.

How to convert an idea into a working model?

The basic step in changing an idea to a successful business model is doing proper research about its feasibility. To start with the businessman should perform a patent search with the concerned government authority before getting it patented through an agent or a lawyer.

They should also do a prior art search that does not involve the patent. If business idea bears resemblance to a previously created design or artwork it cannot be replicated even if a patent has been filed already. The entrepreneur should also carry out a proper market research among his intended customer segment and determine if the idea can actually sell.

If the product has a viable market the owner needs to come up with the minimum possible product manufacture and distribution price that will allow it to be sold at a good value in the retail establishments. This can be done with comparison of various products available in that particular product segment.

It is important to have a prototype of a product before the owner applies for its patent. This is because a prototype always provides the creator with ample scope for developing the end product. If the entrepreneur finalizes the patent before the product is properly completed, it is possible that the changes cannot be included in the patent agreement and rights may be lost to someone who comes up with an improved version of the product.
