Central Washington University is excited to offer a Master of Science Degree in Athletic Administration. The master’s program is a 46-credit online program. The CWU Master of Science in Athletic Administration prepares aspiring and practicing athletic administrators for successful careers in Athletic Administration by providing knowledge, understanding, and the application of successful leadership and management strategies, processes, and skills.

Central Washington University’s (CWU) College of Education and Professional Studies (CEPS) is recognized nationwide for successful training of graduate students in educational administration, psychology, and counseling. CWU graduate students successfully attain positions in education as administrators, school psychologists, and counselors. Housed in CEPS, the Department of Physical Education, School Health and Movement Studies (PESHMS) directs the Athletic Administration Master’s Program with its knowledgeable professors who have considerable experience in interscholastic and intercollegiate athletics as athletic directors, advisors, mentors, and coaches. Tenure track faculty, experienced in teaching, are aware of the need for the practical application of skills, and the knowledge and understanding necessary for successful leadership in athletics.

The opportunity for a degree in athletic administration comes at a time when the need for competent and knowledgeable athletic administrators is on the rise. In today’s fast-paced world of athletic administration, beginning Athletic Directors have little time to engage in “on-the-job” training. New Athletic Directors must be ready to set program direction, establish open communication and professional relationships, apply problem-solving strategies, and address budgetary and other program issues, all while managing an efficient and people-friendly program. Our master’s program prepares new and practicing athletic directors to be capable leaders and efficient managers who work efficiently and effectively.

Athletic Administration Master’s Program Cohort:

As a member of a CWU Athletic Administration cohort, you will work with your fellow graduate students on projects and coursework over a two-year period. Your understanding and application of the strategies and processes of athletic administration will grow with each quarter of participation. Each cohort member relies on the timely and effective support of classmates and faculty. Furthermore, the professional relationships you build as a member of the cohort greatly affect the efficiency and efficacy with which you and your classmates participate and complete coursework. In addition, each member of the cohort establishes a network of professional relationships they rely on as they move forward as practicing coaches and athletic administrators. In short, you and your fellow graduate students will come to rely on one another through two years of coursework, including the coursework you will complete during each summer session. Research in higher education has shown that professional groups, i.e. cohorts, projects, and workshops, engage students, and provide highly interactive and effectual learning environments.

Summer Sessions. Each CWU Master of Science in Athletic Administration cohort will participate in two on-campus, two-week summer sessions. The first session (during the cohort’s first summer) will be the initial experience of the AA cohort. As such, it will give each cohort member the opportunity to meet and work with other cohort members and get up to speed using technology applicable to the master’s program and the practicing athletic director. The second summer session (during the cohort’s second summer) will provide each cohort member with the opportunity to solidify professional relationships, prepare for the cooperative experience, and begin the culminating project. Students may not skip a summer session and then make it up after their project/thesis/examination.

If students cannot make plans for attending both two-week sessions (in order), they may be dropped from the program. (The $50 application is non-refundable). This includes those students selected as Graduate Assistants who may have to work summer camps. We suggest that before prospective students apply, they make certain they are willing and able to attend the summer sessions on campus. The sessions are always around the last week and a half of June and end right before the 4th of July.

Additional Program Information

Cooperating Experience. Each student will complete a one-quarter “cooperating experience” with a practicing professional in athletic administration. The “experience” can take place at a variety of athletic-related programs, i.e. high school and intercollegiate athletic administration, state or national athletic-governing associations or professional associations, private or public recreational facilities or departments, or professional sports organizations. Each “experience” will include a substantive professional project that addresses a current need or problem within the participating organization.

Professional Certification. National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) administrative certification as a Registered Athletic Administrator (RAA) is available to master’s degree candidates upon completion of the CWU Master of Science in Athletic Administration. Additional certifications can be pursued through exams.

Creating a successful multi-channel experience can seem intimidating to many retailers, who may wonder if the effort is worth it. They may not have a choice, however.

“Consumers are expecting this kind of integration already,” said Ron Bowers, senior vice president of Frank Mayer and Associates. a Grafton, Wis.-based merchandising company. “They expect that if they order an item online, they can return it in the store, that kind of thing. It’s up to retailers to make sure that expectation is met.”

But multi-channel retailing offers plenty of benefits to retailers, benefits that make investing in the strategy worthwhile.

Improved customer perception

“Channels are disintegrating for customers,” said Jeremy Gustafson, vice president at KSC Kreate, a digital commerce agency based in Hollywood, Fla. “People are watching television and using their tablet at the same time. They expect the same kind of integration with their shopping experience.”

Brands who don’t provide that kind of experience, he said, are likely to lose customers, especially as the digital generation gains even more buying power.

Stores who do create a seamless experience that integrates all different forms of technology, however, can gain significant customer loyalty. Those brands are perceived as forward-thinking and responsive to customer’s needs — qualities that will keep customers coming back.

That improved perception offers another advantage, as well. In a world of big-box stores and online shopping, finding the best price is easier than ever for customers. A store that is perceived as responsive to customer needs and gives customers easy access to a variety of channels can differentiate itself in a crowded field. That allows the brand to compete on the experience offered, rather than just price. Customers might be willing to pay a little more for the convenience, and will come back repeatedly, and brands don’t have to slice their profits just to keep up.

The primary driver for a retailer adopting any strategy is, of course, increasing profit, most frequently by increasing sales. Multi-channel retailing, by offering a variety of engagement points for the customer to make a purchase, increases the convenience and ease of sales, thus boosting profit.

A customer who thinks about buying a pair of pants, for example, may not want to drive to the mall, park, walk to the store, find the pants and try them on. For that customer, she can go online at home and order the pants from the store’s website. Another customer, however, might be in the store trying on the pants and decide she’d like them in a different color. In that case, she can use an in-store kiosk to find the pants in the preferred color, order them and have them delivered to her home. Still another customer can use her smartphone to take a picture of the pants, send it to a friend and discuss whether to purchase them or not. Having a variety of engagement points gives retailers more tools to make a sale.

Better data collection

Knowing the customer is a key tenant for successful retailing, and multi-channel engagement points provide more opportunities to gather information about customers.

There are two benefits to the data collection offered by multi-channel retail: First, the possibility for gathering more information exists, and the information can be used more effectively.

“People usually are more comfortable entering information themselves, rather than giving it to a salesperson,” said Steve Deckert, marketing manager for Sweet Tooth, a Toronto-based provider of loyalty programs to retailers. “So they are far more likely to enter their email address into a kiosk than give it to a cashier. At the same time, by having that information available across a variety of channels, the retailer has more opportunities to capture the information, and more of it.”

If a retailer can track what a customer is purchasing, and where, more targeted marketing can be introduced. Someone who tends to browse online and then purchase in-store, for example, can be emailed an invitation to a private showing in a store, and the list of products to be shown can be sent before the event, increasing the likelihood of purchase.

Not only is it more likely that the customer will provide important information, but if all the different channels are communicating, then the information only needs to be entered once.

“If you’re going to ask someone for information about themselves, it needs to be available whenever they come to you,” said Verizon’s Bagel. “Otherwise, it feels intrusive and annoying to have to repeat the same information over and over again.”

Multi-channel retailing offers benefits for more than shoppers. Workers, too, can benefit from the use of new technology, by arming them with more information and increasing their efficiency.

A tablet, for example, frees employees from the point-of-sale system, instead allowing them to carry the register with them. Employees can go directly to the aid of customers, helping them to find out what is in stock, what is available at other stores and when new products might be launching. The tablet also can contain information about the loyalty program, so a frequent customer can be given VIP status. Then, when a purchase is ready to be made, the customer does not have to stand in line, but rather can simply continue talking to the salesperson and make her purchase via tablet.

While every type of channel has its own unique set of challenges, there are some strategies that are true across all engagement points.

Be consistent. Messaging across all channels should have the same look and feel; the customer should always know exactly what brand she is interacting with.

“Traditionally, retailers have approached each channel individually,” said Gustafson. “What is needed, though, is to create a single marketing message, and then figure out how to deploy it across all channels. The messaging doesn’t have to be identical, but it all needs to be clearly related.”

Provide a value-add. Make sure each engagement point offers something to the customer. An in-store kiosk that simply accesses the company’s website, for example, is not bringing anything unique to the customer; instead, she can check the website at home, on her own. The same is true of a tablet. If the salesperson with the tablet does not have access to more or better information than the customer can access via her own tablet or smartphone, the application will not bring much value to the transaction.

Security. There is a fine line between being helpful and being intrusive, and it’s a line that is easily crossed. Customers are aware of security issues, and are wary of providing too much personal information.

“There has to be a clear connection between the information collected, how it’s used and what value the customer receives from it,” said Bagel. “Understand your brand strategy and what level of intimacy is appropriate. Depending on your clientele, privacy might not be as important — digital natives tend to be far less concerned with privacy than Baby Boomers, for example. But everyone wants to know that they will receive a benefit from giving you information.”

Be committed. Multi-channel retailing requires an investment in time and money. There needs to be a clear strategy across all teams, and cooperation is critical to success.

“In order to have totally seamless solution, all stakeholders need to be involved, giving their insight and taking ownership and having support and understanding as to what is being done, why and how,” said Bowers. “This is not a sometime commitment; this is a total marketing strategy for the retailer to invest in the future of the customer acquisition, retention process and loyalty programs.”

Four Non-Retail Jobs Hiring During The Holidays

Traditionally, if you wanted to make a little extra money for the holidays, you got a seasonal job at a retail store or restaurant. But this holiday season, there are lots of options that don’t involve long hours standing behind a cash register or avoiding customer stampedes on Black Friday.

“The retail industry is an obvious area for possible seasonal and holiday employment but it’s not the only opportunity,” says Sherry Kast, communications and public relations manager at Express Employment Professionals. “Retail drives the need for additional workers in warehouse, shipping and packaging, gift wrapping and more.”

According to Snag A Job, an hourly jobs website, hiring for seasonal, hourly jobs is up 26 percent from last holiday season. And while many of those jobs are in retail stores, there are a variety of other opportunities as well. This holiday season, look beyond retail to pad your pockets with some extra cash from one of these out-of-the-ordinary seasonal positions:

Virtual assistant. As a virtual assistant, you can often work flexible hours, helping customers “with any personal or business tasks that can be done over the phone, email or Internet,” says Nikunj Mittal, CEO of Rent a Smile, a virtual assistant company that is looking to hire about 75 workers for the holiday season. “We have a lot of bookings for our service from small business owners looking for an extra hand with the busy season,” Mittal says. For jobs like this, seasonal workers earn close to $6 per hour and just need to be comfortable with the Internet and willing to work remotely.

At-home customer service representative. According to Christine Durst of Rat Race Rebellion, a leading online destination for legitimate home-based jobs and projects, many companies are hiring for seasonal home-based positions right now. Some of the opportunities include home-based customer service agents for retail stores, tax software companies, a home shopping network and a major book retailer. Durst says thousands of these types of jobs are available for the holidays for people who can work flexible hours and have strong customer service skills. Some of the companies hiring for such at-home positions include Arise Virtual Solutions, VIPdesk. Convergys and LiveOps .

Shipping and fulfillment positions. As a response to the increase in retail sales during the holiday season, there is also an increased need for people to work in manufacturing, distribution, fulfillment and shipping. For instance, UPS is looking for seasonal help

And staffing company Staff Management, Inc. plans to hire more than 12,000 seasonal workers during the fourth quarter of this year to “staff the facilities that manufacture, package and ship goods that consumers purchase either in retail stores or from online retailers during the holiday season,” says Staff Management COO Joan Davison. “Our clients, who include some of the world’s largest retailers, third party logistics providers, online retailers and consumer goods manufacturers, rely on temporary associates to staff during their holiday peak seasons. Our clients, at facilities across the country, will increase their workforce in excess of 100% during this holiday season.” Positions in fulfillment and distribution often pay more than retail jobs, and at Staff Management, they come with additional benefits like referral bonuses, gas card programs, sign-on bonuses for hard-to-fill shifts, weekly gift card drawings, attendance and safety incentives, and retention incentives,” Davison says. “Associates are eligible for benefits on day one, get paid weekly and have a really good chance of working overtime hours.”

Childcare providers. During the holiday season, there is also an increased demand for childcare workers. “The nanny job market is booming during the holidays due to extra shopping that needs to get done without the kids, Christmas parties and just some down time need by parents to keep their sanity,” says Candi Wingate, president of Nannies4Hire. “A nanny job is a great way to earn some extra cash [during the holiday season].” Locate child care opportunities through websites like Nannies4Hire, local babysitting services, or by advertising your availability through family, friends and neighbors.

“People usually are more comfortable entering information themselves, rather than giving it to a salesperson,” said Steve Deckert, marketing manager for Sweet Tooth, a Toronto-based provider of loyalty programs to retailers. “So they are far more likely to enter their email address into a kiosk than give it to a cashier. At the same time, by having that information available across a variety of channels, the retailer has more opportunities to capture the information, and more of it.”

If a retailer can track what a customer is purchasing, and where, more targeted marketing can be introduced. Someone who tends to browse online and then purchase in-store, for example, can be emailed an invitation to a private showing in a store, and the list of products to be shown can be sent before the event, increasing the likelihood of purchase.

Not only is it more likely that the customer will provide important information, but if all the different channels are communicating, then the information only needs to be entered once.

“If you’re going to ask someone for information about themselves, it needs to be available whenever they come to you,” said Verizon’s Bagel. “Otherwise, it feels intrusive and annoying to have to repeat the same information over and over again.”

Multi-channel retailing offers benefits for more than shoppers. Workers, too, can benefit from the use of new technology, by arming them with more information and increasing their efficiency.

A tablet, for example, frees employees from the point-of-sale system, instead allowing them to carry the register with them. Employees can go directly to the aid of customers, helping them to find out what is in stock, what is available at other stores and when new products might be launching. The tablet also can contain information about the loyalty program, so a frequent customer can be given VIP status. Then, when a purchase is ready to be made, the customer does not have to stand in line, but rather can simply continue talking to the salesperson and make her purchase via tablet.

While every type of channel has its own unique set of challenges, there are some strategies that are true across all engagement points.

Be consistent. Messaging across all channels should have the same look and feel; the customer should always know exactly what brand she is interacting with.

“Traditionally, retailers have approached each channel individually,” said Gustafson. “What is needed, though, is to create a single marketing message, and then figure out how to deploy it across all channels. The messaging doesn’t have to be identical, but it all needs to be clearly related.”

Provide a value-add. Make sure each engagement point offers something to the customer. An in-store kiosk that simply accesses the company’s website, for example, is not bringing anything unique to the customer; instead, she can check the website at home, on her own. The same is true of a tablet. If the salesperson with the tablet does not have access to more or better information than the customer can access via her own tablet or smartphone, the application will not bring much value to the transaction.

Security. There is a fine line between being helpful and being intrusive, and it’s a line that is easily crossed. Customers are aware of security issues, and are wary of providing too much personal information.

“There has to be a clear connection between the information collected, how it’s used and what value the customer receives from it,” said Bagel. “Understand your brand strategy and what level of intimacy is appropriate. Depending on your clientele, privacy might not be as important — digital natives tend to be far less concerned with privacy than Baby Boomers, for example. But everyone wants to know that they will receive a benefit from giving you information.”

Be committed. Multi-channel retailing requires an investment in time and money. There needs to be a clear strategy across all teams, and cooperation is critical to success.

“In order to have totally seamless solution, all stakeholders need to be involved, giving their insight and taking ownership and having support and understanding as to what is being done, why and how,” said Bowers. “This is not a sometime commitment; this is a total marketing strategy for the retailer to invest in the future of the customer acquisition, retention process and loyalty programs.”

Four Non-Retail Jobs Hiring During The Holidays

Traditionally, if you wanted to make a little extra money for the holidays, you got a seasonal job at a retail store or restaurant. But this holiday season, there are lots of options that don’t involve long hours standing behind a cash register or avoiding customer stampedes on Black Friday.

“The retail industry is an obvious area for possible seasonal and holiday employment but it’s not the only opportunity,” says Sherry Kast, communications and public relations manager at Express Employment Professionals. “Retail drives the need for additional workers in warehouse, shipping and packaging, gift wrapping and more.”

According to Snag A Job, an hourly jobs website, hiring for seasonal, hourly jobs is up 26 percent from last holiday season. And while many of those jobs are in retail stores, there are a variety of other opportunities as well. This holiday season, look beyond retail to pad your pockets with some extra cash from one of these out-of-the-ordinary seasonal positions:

Virtual assistant. As a virtual assistant, you can often work flexible hours, helping customers “with any personal or business tasks that can be done over the phone, email or Internet,” says Nikunj Mittal, CEO of Rent a Smile, a virtual assistant company that is looking to hire about 75 workers for the holiday season. “We have a lot of bookings for our service from small business owners looking for an extra hand with the busy season,” Mittal says. For jobs like this, seasonal workers earn close to $6 per hour and just need to be comfortable with the Internet and willing to work remotely.

At-home customer service representative. According to Christine Durst of Rat Race Rebellion, a leading online destination for legitimate home-based jobs and projects, many companies are hiring for seasonal home-based positions right now. Some of the opportunities include home-based customer service agents for retail stores, tax software companies, a home shopping network and a major book retailer. Durst says thousands of these types of jobs are available for the holidays for people who can work flexible hours and have strong customer service skills. Some of the companies hiring for such at-home positions include Arise Virtual Solutions, VIPdesk. Convergys and LiveOps .

Shipping and fulfillment positions. As a response to the increase in retail sales during the holiday season, there is also an increased need for people to work in manufacturing, distribution, fulfillment and shipping. For instance, UPS is looking for seasonal help

And staffing company Staff Management, Inc. plans to hire more than 12,000 seasonal workers during the fourth quarter of this year to “staff the facilities that manufacture, package and ship goods that consumers purchase either in retail stores or from online retailers during the holiday season,” says Staff Management COO Joan Davison. “Our clients, who include some of the world’s largest retailers, third party logistics providers, online retailers and consumer goods manufacturers, rely on temporary associates to staff during their holiday peak seasons. Our clients, at facilities across the country, will increase their workforce in excess of 100% during this holiday season.” Positions in fulfillment and distribution often pay more than retail jobs, and at Staff Management, they come with additional benefits like referral bonuses, gas card programs, sign-on bonuses for hard-to-fill shifts, weekly gift card drawings, attendance and safety incentives, and retention incentives,” Davison says. “Associates are eligible for benefits on day one, get paid weekly and have a really good chance of working overtime hours.”

Childcare providers. During the holiday season, there is also an increased demand for childcare workers. “The nanny job market is booming during the holidays due to extra shopping that needs to get done without the kids, Christmas parties and just some down time need by parents to keep their sanity,” says Candi Wingate, president of Nannies4Hire. “A nanny job is a great way to earn some extra cash [during the holiday season].” Locate child care opportunities through websites like Nannies4Hire, local babysitting services, or by advertising your availability through family, friends and neighbors.
