Post grad internships

If you’re a new college graduate, you already know how difficult the entry-level job market is. And if you graduated without picking up any work experience, your job search may be even tougher.

But here’s something you may not know: You can still do an internship even though you’ve already graduated, and it may give you a better shot at landing a full-time job later.

If you’ve graduated or are about to and are struggling to find a job, a postgraduation internship is an option to explore right now. Don’t be put off by the myth that internships are for current students only. Consider these approaches.

Look for Programs That Offer Internships to Graduates

Sometimes companies and organizations develop internship programs aimed specifically at people who have already graduated from college. For instance, several areas of Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago — especially those with severe labor shortages in this tight medical care market, according to spokesperson Chris James — have created internship programs geared to recent grads.

Similarly, the Public Interest Program developed by Princeton Project 55, a nonprofit organization established by members of Princeton University’s class of 1955, helps recent grads and current students do internships with nonprofit public interest groups across the United States.

Develop Your Network

People you already know in organizations large and small can tell you about informal postgraduation internship opportunities. School alumni are particularly good resources, notes Brandi Baran, associate director of career counseling and planning at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York.

We’ve had a lot of students reaching out to our alums via our Career Network to get advice and try to set up opportunities, Baran says.

Get a Job to Pay the Bills

Internships that are open to graduates often don’t pay much — or anything at all. That doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t pursue them, says Nick Crounse, an assistant account executive for Sawchuk, Brown Associates, a public relations firm in Albany, New York.

After having trouble landing a job immediately out of college, due partly to lack of practical job experience, I began looking for internship opportunities, Crounse says. After interviewing and being offered a temporary gig, I realized I couldn’t afford to take an internship.

Crounse took a survival job for a year to earn and save money. He then contacted the person who had made him the internship offer the year before, and she made the same offer again, which he accepted.

So, one full year after I graduated college, I started my internship, Crounse says. Three-and-a-half months later, after my internship had ended, the company brought me back to work as a full-time employee.

Create Your Own Internship

Andrea Dine, assistant director of the Career Development Center at Macalester College in St. Paul, tells of a 2002 grad who wanted to work in government. The student was passionate about the environment and had strong communication and persuasion skills.

He researched political officials who had successfully campaigned with a proenvironment platform, Dine says. He then contacted a state senator who fit the profile. This senator had never had an intern before, but my student successfully convinced the senator to hire him to research and write position papers on environmental issues and handle constituent correspondence.

An internship might not be your first choice for postgraduation employment. But in this job market, it may be the best way for you to build the experience and personal connections you need to land the job you want — eventually.

Keep reading to find out what you can learn and what materials you might need to complete these courses. Schools offering Political Science degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What You Need to Know

You don’t have to be an aspiring political scientist, politician or political employee to take political science courses. Knowledge of the field is useful in many professions, including business, public relations, journalism, law and marketing. Online, you can find free, noncredit political science courses that allow you to study at your own pace. These courses generally feature lecture notes and some course readings, but you might need to purchase textbooks to get the most out of these offerings. You have the opportunity to complete research papers for your own pleasure, but these aren’t mandatory. Since these classes are the adapted, free versions of actual on-campus courses, you won’t have access to the instructors who originally taught the classes.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

You can use MIT’s OpenCourseWare site to access a number of free political science course, including Foundations of Political Science and Political Science Scope and Methods. Classes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels are offered.

Foundations of Political Science

This MIT course was originally taught to graduate students on campus. You can access exams, assignments and course materials for free and set your own study schedule.

What Will I Learn?

You will learn basic political science theories and focus on concepts, such as political ideologies, institutions, social divisions and participation. This course covers American and comparative politics, as well as the politics of international relations.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

You will write six papers analyzing topics and answering questions presented in the course’s weekly readings. Completing the assignments isn’t required because you won’t communicate with instructors.

What Materials Are Provided?

This course provides lecture notes on topics, such as democracy and social choice, collective action and global society. You may access six examples of student papers and purchase course textbooks through a link on the course’s webpage.

Political Science Scope and Methods

Another OCW course, MIT’s Political Science Scope and Methods course originated as a for-credit course offered to undergraduate students on campus. You can study course content, such as lecture notes, readings, and assignments.

What Will I Learn?

This course covers political science research methods and trains you to conduct research projects independently. You will also learn to think critically about the design and conclusions of political research projects.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

You have the option to write a 2-page paper describing a research project, a 15-page literature review and a final 20-25 page project proposal. As part of another assignment, you will answer three questions on political science topics and describe your sources.

What Materials Are Provided?

This course includes lecture notes on research methods, data gathering and political science models. You may also download guidelines for the research project and access course readings.

University of California (UC) – Irvine

UC Irvine’s Political Science 61A: Minority Politics is an OCW course based on a class that Professor Luis DeSipio taught to students on campus. You can study all course content for free and download materials for later study.

What Will I Learn?

You will examine the political roles of minority groups in America, such as African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans and Latinos. The course also covers the role of race and ethnicity in America’s political system.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

You could write two essays – one on the impact of two pieces of landmark legislation on current minority politics and another on minority voting in presidential politics. The course also includes two essay questions on the topics of pluralism and minority political exclusion.

What Materials Are Included?

This course provides lecture notes on several topics, including pan-ethnicity, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the 14th and 15th amendments. Other materials include links to political advertisements and census questions on race and ethnicity.

CRNA vs. Perfusionist

Aug 27, ’11 by juan de la cruz. MSN, RN, NP Guide

Perfusion is a good career in my opinion. It’s definitely under the radar as far as a career option – very few programs in the US with small class size in most programs. The role goes beyond running the Cardio-Pulmonary Bypass machine in the OR, some work in Extra-Corporeal Life Support centers and provide expertise on ECMO use at the bedside. The pay is lower than CRNA. I found that they have a forum here: http://www.perfusion.com/perfusion/education.html #

I am currently in perfusion school, and will be starting CRNA school in the spring so I can give you some insight into what it takes to get into both. Perfusion programs are considerably easier to get into than CRNA programs mainly because it’s a little known profession and there are far fewer applicants. There are about 25 perfusion programs and 110ish CRNA programs nation wide. The perfusion program I’m in is 18mo and pre-reqs are a bachelors degree, 9 hours of chem including organic and biochem, 5 hours of pre-calc mathmatics, 4 hours of physics, and 7 hours of A+P. You don’t need any prior clinical experience, but I can tell you my experience as an ICU nurse and ECMO specialist put me way ahead of everyone else in my class.

CRNA school requires a BSN or bachelors with an ADN. Minimum 1 year ICU experience (few get in with only 1 year), biostats, physics, college level math class, organic/bio chem. programs nation wide are in the process of switching to the DNP plan of study and vary in length from 24-36mo.

I enjoy perfusion school. It’s challenging but I’ve decided to switch to CRNA for a few reasons: 1 it’s what I have always wanted to do and the reason I got into nursing in the first place. 2 there are about 3500 perfusionists in the US compared to 40000ish CRNAs way easier to find a job or change jobs. 3 CRNA’s are LIP’s perfusionists are not. 4 I see myself getting bored after 5 years or so. 5 Perfusionists starting salary 80000ish CRNA 130000ish.

Perfusion is a great career, and it is what I would be doing with my life had I not been accepted into CRNA this year. If you are interested in perfusion try and set up a time to shadow one. All of the perfusionists I know are smart, easy going, nice guys. If you have any other questions let me know.

Quote from piratenurse0226

Just a heads up, have you thought of going into a surgical or cvicu? Just asking because if you want to pursue CRNA, they will only take adult ICU exp no nicu exp. if you’re serious about applying I would find an adult unit in your hospital to get into.

Schools decide what experience they take. Critical care is the requirement. I attend school with a PICU and NICU nurse. Some places also allow ER.

Hmmmm, well that’s good news then. Most schools that I’ve researched as well as some websites I’ve looked up said most schools will only accept adult ICUs. Thanks for the heads up

You’re correct in that many schools will only accept adult ICU’s. I’m looking at a school in northern california (I’m working in socal at the moment) that takes NICU exp. I don’t see why schools such as Kaiser/CSUF and others don’t acknowledge NICU as critical care experience. Ridiculous, in my opinion.

I’ll agree with you too. ICU is ICU, you need to do more drug calculations is seems for pediatrics/neonates than adults anyway. Best of luck!

Selecting a Good Consumer Tax Lawyer #how #to #find #a #good #tax #attorney

Selecting a Good Consumer Tax Lawyer

The federal tax code is thousands of pages long, full of rules, exceptions to the rules and penalties for violating them. So, you’re not alone if you have questions and problems, whether you’re dealing with income taxes, estate and gift taxes or an IRS audit .

If your research efforts aren’t enough and you realize you need help, selecting a good tax lawyer will make sure your tax problems are handled properly. But where do you start? Here are some things to help you find the right tax lawyer for you.

Focus on the Problem

Not all lawyers handle all types of tax matters, so try to narrow down as best you can what you think your legal problem is.

If it’s income taxes. like preparing returns, taking deductions and credits, etc. then a general tax lawyer may be who you’re looking for. If you have estate and gift tax issues, you probably need a lawyer who works in that area of law. If you have a good idea of what your specific problem is, your search for the right legal help will be much quicker and efficient.

Find One, or Two or Three

The first step in your search is to find the names of a few attorneys. In the beginning it’s always a good idea to talk to more than one attorney. This way you can comparison shop to find one you like and trust. Here’s where to look:

  • Lawyers.com is a great place to start. A few short clicks will get you a list of tax attorneys in your area complete with telephone numbers, background information and more
  • Contact the local bar association in your area
  • The American Bar Association has tools and information to help you find an attorney
  • Talk your family, friends and co-workers. Someone you know may have hired an attorney to help with a tax issue
  • Check your local telephone book for tax lawyers
  • If you don’t think you can afford an attorney, there may be a program in your area offering free or low-cost legal help with taxes

Research

Once you have the names of a few attorneys, it’s time to find out as much as you can about them. Here’s where to look and some things to look for:

  • If you used Lawyers.com, you already have a lot information at your finger tips. Read the information given by the attorney explaining what he does for a living, and visit the attorney’s web site to learn even more
  • Run internet searches on the attorneys’ names. You may find news articles about them, legal cases they’ve handled, or legal articles or blogs they’ve written. This type of information can tell you a lot about the attorneys’ experience and reputations
  • Make some phone calls if you can’t find enough information online. Most attorneys gladly take the time to talk to potential new clients and answer any general questions, like how long he’s been a lawyer, how much tax-related work he does, etc. Ask if the attorney or law firm has a brochure or literature that can be mailed to you
  • Check with your state’s bar association and your local bar association to see if the attorneys on your list have ever been disciplined and if they’re licensed to practice law in your state. If you discover a problem, scratch the names from your list, or feel free to ask the attorneys themselves about it if and when you meet with them
  • In some states, attorneys may be certified by the state bar association as specialists or experts in tax law. This usually means they have advanced training and experience. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the best in the field, but it’s a good indication they really know their business
  • If you call attorneys for more information, ask if they’re members of any national, state or local associations for tax attorneys. It’s a good indication they focus on tax matters and work hard to keep up with the many changes in federal and state tax laws
  • Look for information on a lawyer’s work history. Many tax lawyers have previous experience in other areas of law that can benefit you. For example, a tax lawyer who once worked for the US Attorney’s Office or the IRS may have invaluable experience and contacts if you have a tax problem dealing with the federal government
  • Check for specialized education. It’s not uncommon for a tax lawyer to also be a CPA or an accountant, or to hold a masters legal degree in law (called an LLM) or a masters degree in business administration (MBA)
  • Consider the costs. Depending on your case, an attorney may charge you an hourly fee where you pay a certain amount for each hour she works on your case. Some attorneys may charge a flat fee – a preset price to work on your case from beginning to end. As you research the attorneys on your list, look for information about how they typically charge their clients and consider which fee arrangement best fits your budget

After your research is complete, narrow your list to three or four attorneys and start making phone calls to set up meetings to talk about your case face-to-face. If you did your homework, you should be well on your way to finding the right attorney to handle your case.

Talk to a Tax attorney.
