How Edge Data Center Providers are Changing the Internet’s Geography

Yevgeniy Sverdlik on August 26, 2015

As people watch more and more of their video online versus cable TV or satellite services, and as businesses consume more and more cloud services versus buying hardware boxes and software licenses, the physical nature of internet infrastructure is changing. Whether your drug is Bloodline on Netflix or Duck Dynasty on Amazon Prime, the web content companies go to great lengths to make sure you can binge in high def. The same goes for cloud services, for whom performance on the user’s end means everything in their busy, competitive market.

In recent years, the big push has been to improve the quality of these high-bandwidth web services to users outside of the top metros like New York, Los Angeles, or San Francisco. And the best way to do it has been caching the most popular content or web-application data on servers closer to the so-called “tier-two markets,” places like Phoenix, Minneapolis, or St. Paul. This push has created a whole new category of data center service providers that call their facilities “edge data centers.” These are facilities that quite literally extend the “edge” of the internet further from the traditional internet hubs in places like New York, Northern Virginia, Dallas, or Silicon Valley.

Examples of companies that describe themselves as edge data center providers include EdgeConneX. vXchnge. and 365 Data Centers. Building something that can be truly called an “edge data center” requires a different set of considerations than building your standard colocation facility. It’s about creating interconnection ecosystems in cities away from the traditional core markets.

Recommended: Edge Data Center Firm Names XO Comms Exec CTO

That EdgeConneX went from zero data centers two years ago to two dozen today and growing. and that vXchnge bought eight Sungard data centers in tier-two markets in one go earlier this year illustrates just how quickly demand for edge data centers is growing.

The Edge is a Place

Ultimately, location is the main way for companies like EdgeConneX to differentiate from the big colo players like Equinix or Interxion. Edge data center providers are essentially building in tier-two markets what Equinix and its rivals have built in the big core markets: hubs where all the players in the long chain of delivering content or services to customers interconnect and exchange traffic. These hubs are where most of the internet has lived and grown for the bulk of its existence, and edge data center companies are building smaller hubs in places that don’t already have them but are becoming increasingly bandwidth-hungry.

Take for example CloudFlare, a Content Delivery Network and internet security services company. To host its infrastructure in all the top markets, CloudFlare uses the big colos, including Equinix, Interxion, and TelecityGroup, which Equinix recently acquired. But it also recently became an EdgeConneX customer, because EdgeConneX could extend its network to places where the likes of Equinix don’t have data centers, Joshua Motta, director of special projects at CloudFlare, said.

You don’t see Equinix facilities in places like Phoenix, Las Vegas, or Minneapolis, he said. The distinction isn’t as clear-cut as it may seem at first, however. While it’s true that Equinix doesn’t have facilities in those three markets specifically, it does have presence in other cities that can be considered second-tier markets: places like Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia. But the size of Equinix data centers in those markets is very small compared to its marquee facilities in Silicon Valley, New York, London, or Frankfurt. Compare, for example, the nearly half a million square feet across seven Equinix data centers in the New York metro to 13,000 square feet in a single facility in Boston, and you’ll get the idea.

Transport Versus Peering: a Question of Cost

Boston is also an example of a market without a good data center option for CloudFlare, Motta said. There are plenty of data centers in town, and there is even an internet exchange, but there isn’t a data center where transit providers (companies that carry traffic over long distances), access networks (the home or business internet service providers), and content companies come together and interconnect, he said. It’s possible that this problem is specific to CloudFlare, he warned, since the company prefers not to pay for peering with access networks.

Student Loan Consolidation Student loan finance center

Whether you have federal student loans (such as Stafford, PLUS, or Federal Perkins loans) or private student loans, there are a number of student loan consolidation services that can help you consolidate your loans into one single debt. This can result in lower interest rates, and, in some cases, dramatically reduced monthly loan payments.

Many consolidation services offer fixed interest rates for the life of the loan, which can lock in your savings for years to come. This is good since consolidation loans typically have longer terms than other loans – usually anywhere from 10 to 30 years.

WELLS FARGO LOAN CONSOLIDATION

Wells Fargo offers competitive loan consolidation for those who are consolidating only private student loans. They do not offer consolidation of Federal loans, which dropped them a bit in our ranking.

A recent study by the National Center for Education Statistics shows that half of all recent college graduates have an average student loan debt of $10,000. For some students, this amount is much higher. Many students receive loans from a variety of sources.

There are many advantages to consolidating all of these loans into a single debt. With interest rates at record lows, you will most likely receive a better rate by consolidating your loans now than when you first got your loans. The second advantage is reducing the number of creditors you have, which makes it easier to keep track of monthly loan payments. Consolidating your student loans into a single debt also simplifies the repayment process, making it less likely that you will default on your loan payments.

There are a number of services available to help you in this process. Some only offer federal student loan consolidation, while others enable you to consolidate both federal and private student loans. Therefore, it is important to make sure that the student loan consolidation service you choose meets your student loan consolidation needs.

Additionally, while some websites provide instant, online loan quotes, other websites do not. You will want to make sure that the service you select provides you with the information you need to make consolidation decisions.

There are a variety of issues to consider when looking for a student loan consolidation plan. Some of these include:

  • Information. Does the website provide adequate information to help you make student loan consolidation decisions?
  • Quality of Service. Does the website provide consolidation solutions that meet your needs?
  • Professionalism. Is the website professional and credible? Does the consolidation service have a strong reputation in the industry?

People losing homes for as little as $400 in back taxes – Jul #tax #liens,

#

The other foreclosure crisis: Losing a home over $400 in back taxes

When homeowners don’t pay property taxes or other municipal bills, like water or sewer fees, local governments have less money to maintain services like schools, police and fire departments and road maintenance. By selling tax liens, those governments can collect on what it is owed.

Investors, in return, effectively own a claim against the property until the homeowner pays the county or municipality back or until they default on the debt entirely. The investor can either collect interest on the taxes owed from the homeowner. Or, if the homeowner fails to pay up, the investor can take possession, or foreclose, on the home.

It’s a win-win for investors, said John Rao, a consumer credit and bankruptcy attorney and the author of the report. Either the investor gets their investment back with interest or they get the home — typically, for a pretty sizable discount to what the home is worth.

The report cited a case of an 81-year-old Rhode Island woman who fell behind on a $474 sewer bill. A corporation bought the home in a tax sale for $836.39. The woman was evicted from the home she had lived in for more than 40 years and the corporation resold the place for $85,000, the report said.

Most investors, however, buy tax liens for the interest. That’s because many states allow investors to charge rates of 18% or more on the outstanding debts. And, in some cases, as much as 20% to 50%, the report said.

It is for this reason, that tax lien sales are often promoted on websites and late-night television advertisements as ‘get-rich-quick’ schemes, the report said.

Many states sell tax liens in auctions where investors bid on the interest rate that will be paid on the debt. In some auctions, there are so many investors competing against one another that the rates don’t always hit those staggering double-digit rates. Investors may get more like 7% to 10% interest on the liens.

Sometimes, however, they can sell at or near the maximum, making it nearly impossible for the homeowner to afford the payments and the balance soon balloons.

The elderly are particularly vulnerable: As a result of high unemployment and declining home values, property tax delinquencies have increased to about $15 billion a year, according to the National Tax Lien Association.

And while many people are able to pay off their debts and reclaim their homes, a growing number of people are becoming vulnerable to tax lien foreclosures. Most at risk are the elderly, particularly those suffering from cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s or dementia, said Rao.

The process is incredibly confusing, said Rao. The notices are in legalese that no one can understand. Some states do little to help. The concept of a ‘right to redeem’ is lost on many homeowners.

One elderly Montana woman, who lived alone and had no close family to help her, fell more than $5,000 behind on taxes, the report said. After she failed to respond to letters from the company that bought her home in a tax sale, she was evicted from her Missoula home. As a result, she lost about $150,000 in equity in the property, according to the report.

Fixing the ‘other foreclosure crisis’: The extent of the problem is difficult to determine. The cases occur at the local government level and no one agency or organization aggregates the data for the whole country, as they do for bank foreclosures, according to Rao.

To prevent outstanding debts from becoming insurmountable for homeowners to pay off, the National Consumer Law Center recommends that states lower the maximum interest rates allowed and limit other costs and fees. Rao also believes tax lien sales should be conducted in a two-step process with a court supervising the final property seizures.

State and local governments should also establish programs where property owners can pay off back taxes over time, instead of having to come up with a big lump sum, he said, and notices should be written in clear, easy-to-understand language. The procedure in Delaware, for example, begins with the filing of a praecipe for monition in the office of the prothonotary.

Finally, the center is recommending that procedures be put in place where homeowners are adequately informed of their risks and status all through the process. Homes are lost because homeowners simply don’t know what’s going on until it’s too late.

Industrial Radiography Courses

Industrial Radiography (RT)

Industrial Radiography or Radiographic Testing (RT) uses ionizing electromagnetic radiation to view objects in a way that can’t be seen otherwise. It is not to be confused with the use of ionizing radiation to change or modify objects; radiography’s purpose is strictly for viewing. It is a method of inspecting materials for hidden flaws by using the capability of short wavelength electromagnetic radiation, x-rays and gamma radiation, to penetrate various materials.

Gamma radiation sources, most commonly Iridium-192 and Cobalt-60, are used to inspect a variety of materials. The vast majority of radiography concerns the testing and grading of welds on pressurized piping, pressure vessels, high-capacity storage containers, pipelines, and some structural welds. Other tested materials include concrete (locating rebar or conduit), welder’s test coupons, machined parts, plate metal, or pipewall (locating anomalies due to corrosion or mechanical damage). Theoretically, industrial radiographers could radiograph any solid, flat material (walls, ceilings, floors, square or rectangular containers) or any hollow cylindrical or spherical object.

In many locations in the United States, industrial radiographers are required by governing authorities, i.e. the State in which the testing occurs, to adhere to certain mandatory safety standards that specify such things as the use of certain types of safety equipment and working in pairs. The safety equipment usually includes at least one of four basic items: a radiation survey meter (such as a Geiger/Mueller counter), an alarming dosimeter or rate meter, a gas-charged dosimeter, and a film badge or thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD). In Texas, Title 25 Texas Administrative Code (TAC) Section 289.255 requires that individuals who use radioactive material or x-ray machines during nondestructive testing activities have an acceptable knowledge of radiation safety practices and principles gained through minimum training requirements, typically a 40 hour radiation safety course, followed by a State mandated examination (follow this link to the Texas Department of State Helath Services Radiation Control Program site for more information: http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/radiation/ir.shtm ).

The Level I radiography course requires no prior training or experience by the student. The Level I course is a prerequisite to the 40-hour Level II course. Training material is presented in a manner that promotes understanding and the ability to make immediate application. These courses are ideal for NDT trainees who must have Level I and II training in order to qualify for certification. The Radiographic Film Interpretation course is ideal for facility personnel who are responsible for or oversee the application of testing or Quality Control/Quality Assurance.

Overview

Fever occurs in response to an infection, illness or disease. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a fever is present when the body temperature rises above 99 degrees F. A mild fever usually requires no treatment. If you become uncomfortable, begin vomiting or have trouble sleeping, however, natural home remedies can help reduce the fever. Consult a physician if your body temperature reaches 105 degrees F or higher, or if the fever lasts longer than 72 hours. For treating children younger than 3, seek medical attention when the fever reaches 100.4 degrees F or higher. In children 3 months to 12 months old, see a doctor when a fever of 102.2 F occurs.

Wet Socks, Covered by Dry Ones

This hydrotherapy technique can be performed at home and can help reduce a fever, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Before going to sleep, soak a pair of thin cotton socks in water, wring them out well, and place the wet socks on your feet. Put on a pair of thick, dry, wool or cotton socks over the wet ones, and wear both pairs to bed. While you sleep, your body will begin to circulate lymphatic fluid and blood to fight off the wet feet, which also stimulates the immune system. The socks should dry by morning. Repeat the treatment for five to six nights in a row as needed to reduce your fever.

Fever Bath

Taking a bath in lukewarm water helps reduce fever gradually and safely, according to Alexa Fleckenstein in her book Health20. At the height of the fever, immerse your body in a tub filled with water about 2 degrees cooler than your body temperature. Slowly add cooler water to the bath, which lowers the body temperature. Conclude the bath after about 20 minutes, or whenever you begin to feel cold. Dry off with a towel, quickly return to bed and cover yourself with blankets. Sweating should begin, which is the desired effect after a fever bath. The body temperature will lower by about 2 degrees. Repeat no more than once a day, preferably in the afternoon, until the fever subsides. Don’t use this treatment if you have a fever that’s still rising.

Herbal Tea

The herb feverfew derives its name from its reported ability to reduce fevers. In her book Gentle Healing for Baby and Child, Andrea Candee explains that chamomile, yarrow, elderflower and lemon balm herbs also induce perspiration, which may help bring down body temperature. Use any of these herbs to make a tea by steeping 2 tbsp. of the dried plant material in 2 cups boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes, and then straining. Sweeten with honey if desired, and drink 1 to 2 cups of the herbal tea every few hours as needed. Always consult a physician before taking herbs, however, especially if you take prescription drugs.

Cold Compress

In his book Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide, Burton Goldberg recommends applying a cold compress to the body to help lower a high temperature. Make a cold compress by soaking a clean, cotton washcloth in a bowl filled with ice and water until thoroughly saturated, wringing it out, and then applying it directly to the forehead and trunk of the body. Remove the compress when it warms to body temperature, then soak it in ice water again and reapply it. Repeat the treatment once or twice an hour as needed to reduce fever.
