What Is Cloud Computing? Explained In Simple Words #beginners, cloud, cloud #computing, explanation, guide, hosting, online #apps, online #storage, server, simple, tutorial, web #development

#

I m sure you ve heard the following two words being used extensively online in the last couple of years. Cloud Computing. The next time you read something about a service that mentions Cloud , you will immediately know what they mean by that, and what exactly cloud computing is and how does it work.

What is Cloud Computing and how does it work, explained in simple terms?

Actually, you ve been using cloud computing all this time, unless you were living in a cave somewhere, and that cave somehow didn t have an internet connection.

So let me put this in as simple terms as possible:
Cloud Computing is the ability to use the power of other computers (located somewhere else) and their software, via the Internet (or sometimes other networks), without the need to own them. They are being provided to you, as a service .

That means you don t have to go and buy some super powerful gigantic computer system and risk have it sitting there, doing nothing. By utilizing the cloud, everything is ready for you whenever you might need it. Exactly where the hardware and software is located and how it all works doesn t matter to you, as a user. It s just somewhere up in the vast cloud that the Internet represents.
Now you know one of the reasons they call it the Cloud Computing.

For example, many businesses use cloud computing as a means of remote backup solutions to store and recover their data offsite.

To illustrate the point even better, let s go over one typical example of cloud computing that you must have used before (exception are those with the cave thing from above).

Google as an example of cloud computing

What happens when you type and search something on Google?
Have you ever thought about this? Does your PC go through all that information, sorts it out for you and display all the relevant results? No, it doesn t. Otherwise, you would wait much longer for a simple results page to display. A simple PC can t process all those billions of websites in a fraction of a second, like Google does. Your PC only serves as a messenger to tell Google what you are looking for. Everything else is done by some of Google s powerful computers located somewhere, Who-Knows-Where in the world.
Now, did you ever care about how or where that comes from? Why would you, right? Exactly. That s a great example of how cloud computing is used.

At this point, I m sure you understand what cloud computing is and the basic idea behind it. If that s everything you wanted to know, you can stop here, and go enjoy your life knowing what Cloud Computing is. If you are interested in just a little tiny bit more about it, continue reading to the end (not long from here).

3 Types of Cloud Computing

1. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is basically when you buy raw computing hardware to use over the net, usually servers, or online storage. You buy what you need and pay-as-you-go. The best and the most basic example of this type of cloud computing is buying a web hosting for your website. You pay monthly fee to a hosting company for the storage on their servers and to have them serve up files for your website from those servers. Another good example of someone who provides these types of cloud services would be RackSpace cloud company .

2. Software as a Service (SaaS) is a case where you use the complete software application that s running on someone else s servers. The best example of this is Google Docs. which you can use for creating and storing text documents, presentations, spreadsheets and so on

3. Platform as a Service (PaaS) is case where you create applications using web-based tools so they run on systems software and hardware provided by another company. As an example, consider a situation where you develop your own e-commerce website but have the whole thing, including the shopping cart, checkout, and payment mechanism running on a merchant s server.

That should be all you need to know to get you started.

As you can see, the idea behind cloud computing is very powerful and useful beyond measure. Especially now when you actually know what it is.

6 Apps That Turn Your iPad Into An Overpriced-Yet-Awesome Cat Toy #cool #ipad #apps

Cats are awesome. We all agree on that (if you don t, I have a feeling you might not want to turn your iPad into a cat toy. Just saying). I must admit, though, that even for a cat lover like me, the idea of letting my cats play with my precious iPad seemed a bit crazy. I mean, they have enough toys of their own that don t cost hundreds of dollars.

Well, I m here to tell you that letting your cats play with iPad cat toys is the most fun you and they are going to have this month. Surprisingly, cats (at least mine) tend to be very gentle on the screen and don t really use their claws, and seeing them trying to find the critters on the screen under the iPad is positively hilarious. So if you feel ready now, and think you re up to trying, here are 6 great apps that turn your iPad into an awesome cat toy. You won t regret it!

Friskies JitterBug [iTunes ]

This game by Friskies was definitely one of the favorites. When you load it, you can either choose Play Game or Advanced . In Advanced. you can choose how many bugs you want to see of each, and choose to play the endless mode, which basically lets your cat play forever and ever.

If you start the game through the Advanced screen, you will get a totally black screen with cute bugs on it. My cats loved this. When the cat taps on a bug, it disappears, but new ones enter all the time. The game has no sound. If it s not in endless mode, the cat can win by killing all the bugs.

If you don t enter the game through the advanced screen, you will get a timed game with prompts and levels, which my cats found somewhat less appealing.

Cat Fishing [iTunes ] Cat Fishing 2 [iTunes ]

These are two more games by Friskies, which are very similar to one another and are therefore included under the same title. The goal of the game is for the cat to tap on the fish. When it does, they disappear. Here, too, there is no sound.

In Cat Fishing, there s just this screen with one fish, which is replaced by a new one when the cat taps it. There s a kill count on the top right corner.

Cat Fishing 2 is a bit more complex, with more than one fish at a time, and a timer and levels that keep prompting and switching. As with JitterBug, my cats loved the fish, not so much the prompts.

Game For Cats [iTunes ]

Game for Cats are really trying to sell you more games, but their free version is actually quite good too. When you launch the app, you will see this screen. The cheese version on the right requires an in-app purchase, but the laser version on the left is totally free.

If your cats like to play with a laser pointer, they re going to love this. The laser dot moves around the screen at a surprisingly lifelike way, and is really calling out to cats to catch it. The dot is a bit hard to catch, but if they manage to do it, it blows up with a small ding sound, and a new one appears.

To exit the game, tap the paw icon on the bottom 5 times in a row (hopefully your cats can t do this).

Cat Toys Lite [iTunes ]

In this game, your cat gets to play with a purple mouse trapped in a box. You can control the speed of the mouse, and toggle sounds on and off. When your cat taps the mouse, it speeds up, and if sounds are on, it also squeaks.

Something about the mouse s movements really caught my cats eye, and they went to great lengths trying to catch it. You can also get the full version for $0.99, which lets you choose between 5 different toys.

Cat Toy [iTunes ]

Now this is a good one. Cat Toy is actually an iPhone app, one of those you have to blow up to fit the iPad screen, but if your cats are not too picky about their graphics, it s not a problem.

The game lets you choose between four different modes: Itsy (spider), Flutter (butterfly), Zapper (laser) and Squeak (mouse).

The favorite in my house was the mouse, hands down. In this mode, the mouse is running around the screen, and then vanishes off it. While it s gone, you hear scratching sounds that simply drove my cats crazy. They were sure the mouse was hiding under the iPad.

The other modes are fun too, but not as good as this. The only problem was that my cats were so enthusiastic, they kept activating multi-touch gestures and switching apps. This only happened with this app.

Catch The Mouse Cat Game [iTunes $0.99]

As the only paid app on this lineup, Catch the Mouse is worth the 99 , but (at least for my cats) only if you turn off the sound.

What you get in this game is a cute orange mouse, and it s running around the screen for dear life. The sounds, unfortunately, are bit over the top, and my cats were not really buying it. They sat there looking at the thing, but it was making such unbelievable sounds, they weren t engaged.

The magic happened when I turned off the sound. Suddenly, the mouse became very attractive, and the hits counter started climbing. If you don t like orange on black, there are 5 different background colors to choose from, and 3 different mouse colors.

Bottom Line

Turning the iPad into a cat toy is officially a success. The apps are great, and the cats had loads of fun (and so did us humans).

What do your cats think of these games? Or do you think it s totally crazy to even try? Do you know any more cool cat games for the iPad? Share everything in the comments.

OK, my Feline Mistress has every one of these-plus a few more. Call-A-Cat by Friskies, “Amazing Spider”, while not specifically a “cat game”, nor an iPad app, Princess Sita actually prefers this one, AND “Koi Pond”. The last two were also two of the first apps I got for my iPod. While she doesn’t necessarily go into “batting” overdrive with them, she’ll stare at them for an hour sometimes. As far as her more active play, yes, she also prefers either Jitterbug OR GamesForCats, (both options-she switches back and forth on her own.) The Call-A-Cat we do when she wants to play “hide seek”, OR, just when I need to find her newest sleeping spot. Lol!
Oh, did I mention she also likes watching videos on “HER” netbook. (“Mean Kitty”, AKA Sparta is #1, then she likes to watch a bit of Nora-especially when I’m trying to slow her down. 😉

Mobile Accounting Apps

Buyer’s Guide

At first glance, “mobile accounting” sounds like an easy thing to define: accounting software that can be used on mobile devices such as phones and tablets.

However, a fuller definition is more complex. Depending on the vendor, different mobile apps will provide different levels and types of functionality. Making things more complex, mobile accounting will likely be just one feature of your larger business accounting software suite. which you may or may not already be under contract for.

This buyer s guide will help you figure out which type of system best fits your mobile accounting needs so you can choose a software vendor with confidence!

Here s what we ll cover:

What Is Mobile Accounting Software?

Mobile accounting refers to general accounting software that can be accessed away from the office and/or desktop computer. This can be one of two kinds of systems:

  • Apps specifically made for mobile devices (which provide the best user experience and user interface)
  • General cloud-based accounting software that can be accessed through a mobile device

In this guide, we re talking specifically about the first option listed above when we discussing mobile accounting apps.

Mobile accounting for businesses has lagged behind mobile apps for personal financial management. For years, banks have had mobile apps allowing individuals to view their balance, check their accounts and pay their bills while on the go, but providing the same features for large and small business needs has taken a bit longer.

Now, however, as mobile applications grow in popularity in all factors of life personal and business many accounting software vendors are offering companion mobile accounting apps (many of which are fully-featured) for iOS, Android and Windows devices. The number and types of features offered differs from vendor to vendor and from package to package within the offerings of particular vendors, allowing for a huge amount of variety and flexibility in terms of what “mobile accounting” actually represents for an individual business or firm.

Common Features of Mobile Accounting Apps

The most typical mobile accounting features are explained in the following table.

Check financial records and review transactions in real-time. Without the ability to access your home financial database, a mobile accounting system would not be of great use to you.

Core accounting functions

Perform basic financial tasks required to manage the accounting needs of your business, including: general ledger functionality. accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR). fixed assets and bank reconciliation.

Scan and upload receipts while on the go. Some apps even allow you to turn receipts into instant expense reports, making it easier to track and manage expenses incurred on the road or otherwise away from the office.

Track and process employee payroll while away from the office. Access your core payroll system to compose and send paychecks, automatically withhold and pay government taxes and generate the necessary legal and tax reports on a regular basis.

Automate the collection of payments from customers to enable timely and consistent collection with minimal human error. Most mobile apps will assist these functions by allowing you to accept online payments through PayPal, credit card, e-check etc.

Track inventory levels to maximize profit, avoid overspending and minimize costs associated with inventory depreciation. Some mobile vendors provide this functionality so, even on the go, managers can monitor inventory by tracking product levels as well as orders, sales and deliveries.

Calendar and time tracking

Stay on top of deadlines and monitor the amount of time spent on particular tasks. Many mobile accounting systems help do this by providing a calendar that notifies you of important moments on your schedule and tracks how you spend your time.

What Type of Buyer Are You?

Most businesses require accounting software of some kind, and increasingly those businesses need mobile accounting as a part of their larger system. Thus, there are many different types of mobile accounting buyers; however, the majority of them will fall into one of the following three categories:

  • Growing small-business buyers. These are businesses that want to upgrade very simple or basic systems to more robust small business accounting systems that will support more sophisticated functions, including mobile accounting. This also includes those businesses that may already have a fairly robust system, but now want to add mobile functionality. These upgrades may be for any of a variety of reasons, though often they are the result of a small business growing to a certain size threshold and finding it necessary to implement new industry-specific functionality as well as specialized time-saving features (including availability of a mobile app).
  • Enterprise buyers. These buyers are businesses and organizations that need the functionality of a larger enterprise resource planning (ERP) software suite. Usually, these systems will include robust, complex functionality (such as international finance and market considerations) that is only useful to large entities.

Seamless integration may be more important to these buyers than specific features, but buyers should be ready and able to examine both. (For example, both SAP and Oracle, two of the largest ERP vendors, have some of the most feature-rich systems on the market.) Given the tremendous scope of these organizations, mobile functionality and accessibility is crucial so that the large number of company stakeholders in play will be able to access and update financial data whenever and wherever necessary.

  • Best-of-breed buyers. In contrast to the integration-focused enterprise buyers, these buyers are interested in very specific functionalities. Law firms. for example, may need accounting software that can perform trust accounting as a key feature, while nonprofit organizations will need software that can track fundraising data.

Some best-of-breed buyers will thus require mobile accounting as a key functionality. These might include sales organizations with team members frequently on the road, smaller businesses that require the financial officer to multitask and one-person firms (such as realtors ) where more than half of all business may be transacted away from the office.

  • Benefits and Potential Issues of Mobile Accounting Software

The greatest benefit of mobile accounting software is that users can access their company s accounting system from anywhere. This helps surface costs and expenditures and encourages more financially responsible decision-making.

A specific benefit of mobile accounting relates to legal and tax compliance. When it comes to business transactions happening across the country, or even across the world, different localities will have different laws, regulations and taxes related to those transactions. Robust mobile accounting systems will take those local concerns into consideration when processing transactions.

However, businesses should be sure that they purchase mobile accounting software that fully suits their mobile needs. Though the mobile app will be synced with your licensed account, some apps will have limited functionality while others are fully featured (with a potential price differential as a result).

In addition, buyers in certain industries with business-specific needs (such as law firms, nonprofits, manufacturing companies etc.) should be sure they are purchasing accounting software (mobile or otherwise) that fits those specified functionalities.

    Market Trends to Understand

Here are some market trends you should consider as you select a product:

Mobile functionality. Mobile accounting is one of the key trends in accounting software today. Many firms consider accounting software that doesn t contain mobile functionality to be vastly out-of-date and not worth consideration.

Cloud-based software. Most mobile accounting apps are independent systems that link up with a company s license for desktop software. However, some mobile accounting systems will integrate more directly with a core cloud-based desktop product at the home office. Cloud-based systems, which are increasingly popular, require less hardware than on-premises software. They also require less IT knowledge, have lower upfront costs and are more quickly implemented, making them a good choice for smaller firms and businesses, in particular.

Not sure if you’re getting the best price available while shopping this Black Friday? These barcode-scanning apps will take the stress out of comparison shopping this holiday season.

While contestants on The Price is Right might be able to guess the price of pretty much any item within pennies, in the real world, price-comparison apps do the work for you.

These services let you know if the item before you is a deal or no deal before you make a costly mistake. When standing before a shelf of rapidly selling must-have gifts, there’s no need to phone a friend frantically to make sure you’re getting the lowest price possible; your phone can tell you.

It’s a welcome relief since at this time of year stores are filled with enough flashing lights and screaming crowds to turn a holiday shopping trip into a full-on family feud right there in the mall.

For the past few holiday seasons, these apps have been saving shoppers the trouble of searching for a deal online before driving to local stores to see if they can beat it. There are apps to help the tech-deficient choose a gift for the tech-addicted, lighten the load of loyalty cards, predict prices and product releases to minimize buyer’s (and receiver’s) remorse, and offer up rewards.

Price-comparison apps merely need to snap a barcode and perform a search to turn out all of the above, making the marketplace crowded. Because we don’t want you to start your holiday shopping panic before you’ve even left an app store, PCMag has found the 14 best apps out there.

The Best Grocery Coupon Websites and Apps

You know the old-school strategies for cutting food costs—plan weekly menus. scour circulars, clip coupons, build stockpiles of sale items. And, yes, we know that’s easier said than done (we’re busy parents, too). Thankfully, there are genius new tools that take the sweat—and scissors—out of saving. Two words: free money!

Classic Saving Strategy: Cook around the sales.
Modern Upgrade: With the Food on the Table app. punch in your fam’s food preferences (no fish, crazy about Italian) and your fave stores, and, using your phone’s GPS, it’ll comb through the circulars for you and suggest recipes built around that week’s bargains. Already have a menu? Type in any ingredients you don’t have home at shortcuts.com to find the lowest prices at local stores. It’ll even look for coupons and add them right to your grocery-store loyalty card.

Classic Savings Strategy: Make a list and stick to it.
Modern Upgrade: There are plenty of cool list apps, but Grocery IQ kicks it up a notch with integrated coupons from coupons.com. When you add something, it alerts you if there are coupons available to print or load to your grocery-store loyalty card. The newer PushPins app (linked with 6,000+ stores) automatically loads coupons to your loyalty card and suggests weekly specials when you build your shopping list or scan bar codes in-store.

Classic Savings Strategy: Never pay full price (coupons, baby!).
Modern Upgrade: Let coupons come to you. Safeway (Just for U) is among the chains rolling out apps that offer personalized digital coupons based on your shopping habits (with SCAN IT. you can scan and bag groceries as you shop). No matter where you shop, link your plastic loyalty card to the store’s digital coupon center (most chains have one on their website now) so you’re not missing no-brainer savings at checkout.

Classic Savings Strategy: Stack coupons on top of sales
Modern Upgrade: The Grocery Smarts Coupon Shopper app makes this savings twofer simple by matching up circulars (for chains such as Target, CVS, Rite-Aid, and Walgreens) with available coupons to show your ultimate bottom line (it’ll hook you up with printable coupons or tell you newspaper circular dates). Make it a trifecta by using your store discount card, too. Always forgetting the one you (d’oh!) need? Consolidate them all on your phone with the CardStar app .

Classic Savings Strategy: Get the most bang for your bucks.
Modern Upgrade: If you’re the type to pay off your credit card bill each month (a key “if,” experts warn), browse “grocery rewards” card options at a comparison site like nerdwallet.com or cardbenefit.com to see if one’s right for you (some offer 6 percent cash back). And register your store loyalty cards at tuition-savings site upromise.com to earn an effortless 1 to 3 percent back on groceries toward your kid’s college account; download coupons from the site to nab extra college bucks.
