Ecommerce Basics: 10 Questions to Ask When Creating an Online Store

Former West Coast Editor

If your company sells goods in a brick-and-mortar store but not online, you could be missing out on an incredible revenue-generating opportunity. U.S. online retail sales grew 12.6 percent to $176.2 billion in 2010, and they re expected to reach $278.9 billion by 2015. according to Cambridge, Mass.-based technology and market research company Forrester Research.

Is your business ready to reap some of those online sales? Launching an online store can be challenging for small businesses, which are often short on time, budget and staff. But ecommerce vendors can help you make designing and maintaining an online store relatively simple and affordable.

Here are 10 important questions to ask when creating your company s first online store:

1. How do I start building my online store?
If you can t afford to hire someone to build a custom online store, don t worry. There are plenty of ecommerce vendors that can help you create one quickly. They can take the hassle and headache of hard coding, hosting and doing maintenance on a server of your own out of the online store equation, says Julian Barkat, director of ecommerce and online marketing at Eggs to Apples. a Philadelphia digital marketing agency.

Such companies as Bigcommerce. Shopify. Goodsie. Jumpseller and Volusion let you design the overall look, feel and functionality of your online store. They also let you do things such as upload your product catalog, set up customer shopping carts, securely accept payments and handle order fulfillment. These services securely host your online store on their own servers. You can link to your online store from your company s main website.

Ecommerce services such as these usually require some basic initial set-up work on your part. For instance, with Shopify, you choose a storefront layout from a set of templates and customize your fonts, overall color scheme and product image sizes. Shopify users can also upload their own custom brand logos and backgrounds.

Prices for such services range from about $10 to $700 a month, depending largely on the number of products you sell and the amount and types of services provided.

2. How can I best customize the overall look of my online store?
In most cases, if your company already has a website, your ecommerce site should reflect your existing online look, including your logos and color schemes. If you don t have a business website, choose background and accent colors for your ecommerce site that complement your logo.

Most design templates from ecommerce vendors come with preset theme settings that don t require HTML or CSS knowledge to customize. So, it should be relatively easy to upload your logo and product images and add banners, slideshows and more.

3. What type of payment system should I use?
Barkat recommends PayPal when you re starting out. That s mainly because the third-party processor is so widely known as a secure system for accepting online payments.

While there aren t any sign-up or fixed monthly charges for PayPal s basic service, Barkat cautions that PayPal s seller fees can really add up quick. PayPal sellers pay a 2.9 percent transaction fee on the total sale amount, plus a 30-cent fee per transaction.

Authorize.net is another popular payment processing solution that Barkat recommends. The processor charges a $99 set-up fee, plus a $20 monthly fee and 10 cents per transaction.

Still, many shoppers prefer to pay for online purchases with their own credit cards rather than use PayPal or other third-party payment processors. You can obtain a merchant account with each individual credit card company. Many charge fees per transaction ranging from 20 to 50 cents, plus a percentage of the total purchase amount. Some also charge monthly, quarterly and annual fees.

4. How will I handle customer service?
To respond to customers concerns efficiently, you may want to choose an ecommerce vendor that gives you access to a reliable customer relationship management (CRM) tool. Most of the major ecommerce vendors offer CRM options, sometimes for an added fee ranging between about $25 and $75 per month.

CRM tools document, streamline and structure the many ways merchants interact with customers in one central place, including customer contact information, recent purchases, complaints and pending orders.

Heather Peterson, founder of Girl Charlee Inc.. a Signal Hill, Calif.-based online retailer and wholesaler of vintage and rare knit fabrics, suggests getting a toll-free phone number specifically dedicated to customer service. Another option is to set up a live chat in your online store, she says, but only if you can operate it 24/7, which online shoppers have come to expect.

5. How should I determine shipping costs?
It s often easier and more accurate to leave exact shipping-cost calculations — both to you and your customer — to the carrier you use. The major carriers will calculate shipping costs for you for free, and most major ecommerce vendors allow you to integrate those costs into your store s checkout section.

On the other hand, you may want to consider offering free shipping, at least for orders over a certain amount. If your direct competitors provide free shipping, Peterson suggests that you consider it, too, if you can afford it.

6. How do I create the best product images and descriptions?
Online shoppers don t get to see, touch, feel or smell your product, says Barkat, so the next best thing is a crisp, clear product image. While he says you shouldn t entirely cut corners on photography, you don t have to hire a professional to get high-quality images. But you should use a 16-megapixel DSLR camera, decent lighting and a light box, he advises. A photo lightbox is a tent-like container with several light bulbs aimed at its interior that photography professionals often use to create well-illuminated images of objects.

Peterson says written product descriptions should be short, yet rich with enough interesting details to pique customer interest. Try to use compelling adjectives and phrases that evoke an emotion when someone reads your description, she says, without getting too carried away or taking up too much space. In addition to noting the price, you may want to include product uses, dimensions and other defining characteristics.

7. Should I allow customer reviews and social sharing?
Giving customers the ability to comment on your products and leave ratings can help boost their confidence in your store, Peterson says. Positive reviews and social media shares could lead to more sales, but there s also the risk of negative comments. Several major ecommerce services offer customer review options that allow you to respond to — or remove — undesirable comments.

While Peterson hasn t yet enabled customer comments within her online store, she has made it possible for customers to like her products on Facebook, pin images of them to their Pinterest pages and email images and brief descriptions of them directly from the product listings.

8. How will I start to attract shoppers?
After your store is up and running, spread the word both online and off. Placing links to your store s web address on your company s main website and in your email newsletter campaigns would be a good start. Peterson also recommends creating Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and YouTube accounts representing your online store. Updating your company s social media sites a few times a day can drive traffic to your store by drawing attention to daily deals and other promotions.

It s also advisable to choose an ecommerce vendor that automatically uses search engine optimization (SEO) for your store s content. SEO tactics can give your store a higher ranking in search results on Google, Bing and Yahoo.

9. How should I handle returns?
Every store has to deal with returned items. Double-check that your ecommerce vendor provides built-in tools that let you quickly and easily replace merchandise or refund purchase prices, restock your inventory and send emails to customers about the status of their return.

10. How can I track the success of my store?
Try to select an ecommerce vendor that offers free self-service analytics, often driven by Google Analytics, and other reporting tools to help you track your store s performance over time. These can tell you how many people are visiting your store and how often, where they live and how they found you. They can also show you which websites drive the most traffic to your store and which products customers look at and purchase most and least often.

Apple MacBook Air Core 2 Duo 1.6 11 (Late ’10) Specs

The Apple MacBook Air “Core 2 Duo” 1.6 11″ (Late 2010) originally was offered as a “configure-to-order” option for the MacBook Air “Core 2 Duo” 1.4 11″ (Late 2010). but it later was sold as a standard configuration, too. Other than processor, this model is identical to the MC506LL/A configuration of the MacBook Air “Core 2 Duo” 1.4 11″ (Late 2010) and both were offered with 128 GB of flash storage as shipped.

The Apple MacBook Air “Core 2 Duo” 1.6 11″ (Late 2010) is powered by a 1.6 GHz Intel “Core 2 Duo” processor (SU9600) with two independent processor “cores” on a single chip with a 3 MB on-chip shared level 2 cache running on a 800 MHz frontside bus.

It features 2 GB of onboard 1066 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (which could be upgraded to 4 GB only at the time of purchase, although 4 GB was standard for the MC906LL/A configuration), 128 GB of flash storage, a NVIDIA GeForce 320M “graphics processor with 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory”, an integrated “FaceTime” video camera, a non-backlit full-size keyboard (the function keys are smaller, however) and an 11.6″ widescreen TFT LED backlit active-matrix “glossy” display (1366×768 native resolution) in a razor thin (0.11-0.68 inch), 2.3 pound, aluminum case.

Connectivity includes AirPort Extreme (802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, dual USB 2.0 ports, analog audio out, and video out capabilities (Mini DisplayPort) that support an external 30″ display. It lacks internal Ethernet (an external adapter was available as a US$29 upgrade) and lacks Firewire and optical audio in/out as well.

The MacBook Air “Core 2 Duo” 1.6 11″ (Late 2010) uses a completely new housing compared to earlier MacBook Air models — with an 11.6″ display and an “inertial” multitouch trackpad — but also is notable for internal differences as well. Internally, it has onboard RAM and lacks an optical drive, just like its predecessors, but also has flash storage that is not intended to be upgraded after purchase and multiple internal battery cells that likewise are not designed to be replaced. Apple touts that the flash storage makes it possible for this MacBook Air model to offer “instant on” responsiveness and up to 30 days of standby time as well as a thinner housing and improved battery life.

Windows 10 how to: Managing wireless network connections

Windows 10 means new settings and options to learn and get used to. One of those is managing wireless network connections. In Windows 10 you can easily manage your network connections and can share those connections with your contacts using Wi-Fi Sense.

To manage wireless settings, go into the Windows 10 settings menu and select Network and Internet. You can also right click the wireless icon in the action center or type Wi-Fi into Cortana. Once there you can turn Wi-Fi on or off and connect to local networks by clicking them and selecting Connect.

In Advanced Options you can set your device to be discoverable or hidden from other PCs on the same network. You can also turn on and off a metered connection, this is important if you have limited data, for example if you re using the new Surface 3 with LTE .

There’s also a feature in Windows 10 called Wi-Fi Sense. This allows you to store your passwords on various networks across your devices. It also lets you share your Wi-Fi connection with your Outlook, Skype, and Facebook connections without giving them your network password. If you prefer to not share your connection with your contacts you can easily uncheck the boxes in the Wi-Fi Sense menu. At the moment you cannot select specific individuals to share your network connections with over Wi-Fi Sense. Hopefully that feature is available in the future.

Managing wireless networks is pretty easy in Windows 10 and all of the settings are easy to find and are clearly labeled. Jumping between networks with Wi-Fi Sense is easy and most of the settings are easy to personalize, though there are a few customizations not yet available.

10 Tips for Buying a Diamond Online

Engagement rings are one of the most popular choices to showcase a diamond, but regardless of the setting, you can shop with confidence online by following our tips. Courtesy of John O’Hara.

Consumers have more options than ever when it comes to buying diamonds. In addition to jewelry retailers, you can shop from your computer, tablet or smartphone. Many of the same considerations apply whether you re buying a diamond in person or online, but GIA has a few additional tips for shopping online that will help you click the Buy Now button with confidence.

    1. Research and learn

As with any significant purchase, start by researching your options. Educate yourself about the 4Cs and determine which diamond qualities are most important to you. This decision, along with your budget, will help guide your diamond purchase.

    2. Look for specifics

When shopping online, make sure you know exactly what you are buying. Some sites show diamonds with a range in carat weight, color or clarity. To ensure you know the value of the stone you re purchasing, look for specifics on its 4Cs, not a range.

    3. Look for a grading report

Make sure the diamond comes with an independent grading report. like those provided by GIA, which provides an unbiased analysis of the diamond s 4Cs. A diamond s value is largely determined by quality, so an objective, third-party assessment of the 4Cs is critical.

    4. Verify the GIA report with Report Check

If the diamond comes with a GIA report, you can verify the report details on Report Check. GIA s secure, online database and even print out a facsimile of the report, when available. It s a convenient way to make sure that the online product description matches the grading results.

The GIA Diamond Grading Report provides a full assessment of a diamond s quality using the 4Cs. View a sample report.

    5. Look for a laser inscription

For added security, find out if the diamond s grading report number is laser-inscribed on its girdle. In some cases the diamond will be inscribed before it is offered for sale, or it can be requested at the time of purchase. In addition to the diamond s unique GIA report number, the inscription can be a personal message or symbol for identification. The microscopic inscription is viewable under 10X magnification, using a jeweler s loupe, and because it s noted on the diamond s GIA report, it will help ensure that the diamond you receive matches the report issued for it.

Microscopically inscribing the report number on the diamond’s girdle makes it possible for you to easily identify your diamond in case it is ever lost or stolen.

    6. Know the seller

Once you ve decided on the diamond that s right for you, there are a few quick checks to do on the company you re considering buying from. You ll want to know:

    • How long has the company been in business?
    • What kind of reviews has the company received?
    • Does it belong to any jewelry trade associations? (Associations often have ethical guidelines members have to meet.)
    • Do they offer secure transactions?
    • Are the online representatives helpful?
    • What is the return policy?
    • Where is the seller located?
    • How will the diamond be shipped? Is the shipment insured? Is signature required for delivery?
    • In addition to the above, if you re buying from online auction sites, you ll also want to look into buyer feedback and ratings and determine if the seller is providing sufficient evidence of the quality of the diamond offered for sale, such as photographs, a grading report, or report number that can be verified

    7. Consider the payment method

Each online retailer or auction site will specify how it will accept payment. If you paid with a credit card and if there is a problem with the purchase, most credit card companies provide recourse. Using a check or a money order for your purchase can reduce your options.

    8. Proceed cautiously with out-of-country online sites

For example, U.S.-based consumers have options for recourse when buying from a U.S. based company, such as filing complaints with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC), Better Business Bureau (BBB), etc. or pursuing a legal case in civil court. Websites that do not have a physical presence in your home country may be insulated from recourse and attempts to recover funds can be frustrating.

    9. Get the diamond appraised

Once your beautiful diamond is in-hand, have an independent appraiser confirm that it matches the seller s description and accompanying paperwork. The appraiser will also provide you with the value of the diamond for insurance purposes.

    10. View the diamond in person

The convenience of online shopping can t be beat if you re researching your options and trying to narrow your choices. Be aware that diamonds that appear to be almost identical on a grading report same color, clarity or cut grades may look different from each other when viewed in person. Ultimately, your decision is a personal one, so seeing the diamond with your own eyes is the best way to determine if it s right for you. So look for online sellers with retail stores and/or easy and flexible return policies.

The vast majority of online diamond purchases go smoothly. Follow the recommendations above to greatly increase your chances for a stress-free and secure online diamond purchase.

The first step in the process of saving a fortune on your grocery bill is simply accepting the fact that you’re a cheapskate. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about and it’s certainly nothing to hide. Back in my University days I would surf the Internet (which was very young at the time) for whatever grocery coupon websites I could find, in addition to scrounging through the Sunday newspaper for a very limited collection of grocery coupons. The problem back then was that any grocery coupon websites you could find had probably less than a dozen offers, and most of the websites amounted to nothing more than email collection buckets so that they could turn around and resell your email address to spammers.

Fortunately, the Internet has evolved since then. Today, not only do you not have to put scissors to newspaper anymore, but most of these online grocery coupon sites accumulate manufacturer offers from everywhere and provide them to you in a convenient list that you just select and print in minutes.

Selecting the Best Grocery Coupon Websites

Considering the volume of websites out there that tout themselves as the best money-saving website for groceries, I’ve decided to put together a simple list of sites that are truly the tried-and-true spots that you should check every week to save a fortune on your grocery bill. For starters, MakeUseOf has already covered a number of top coupon websites including:

    • GroceryGuide. which lets you find the best grocery deals from stores and malls in your local area
    • ShortCuts from AOL, with the convenience of electronically loading all coupons directly to your grocery store loyalty card (no need to carry coupons around!)
    • CouponChief. with thousands of retail store coupons. Why buy baby products from a grocery store when you can save $5 off diapers or formula at Diapers.com?

Check out all of MakeUseOf’s grocery resources for other offers and tools for saving money on groceries.

While those resources are excellent, I wanted to put together a definitive guide of grocery coupon websites for other cheapskates out there like me. I no longer bother with using scissors on the Sunday paper – there are much better money-saving resources on line, and they take far less time.

    The Big Three

Every grocery coupon hound should know that currently there are three major resources for most of the coupon deals on the Internet. These are three of the earliest websites that started the online coupon craze, and they are now the three that “feed” most of the offers for other, smaller offshoot websites. If you want the access to all of the deals, it’s best to just go straight to the source. Coupons.com is the first major site you should always check for the best manufacturer coupons. These are mostly non-location specific, meaning they’re available nationally (U.S. only).

Coupons.com is the place anyone should begin their quest, since this is the site that feeds most others. One brief search just now turned up 112 offers to sort through and print.

The next major grocery coupon site that feeds data to other sites is SmartSource.com. The cool thing about SmartSource is that you can type in your zip code and get offers from the local “circulars” that are normally sent inside local newspapers.

It just doesn’t get much more convenient than that. If you click on the “Coupons” tab at the top, you can review nationally offered coupons as well, but the thing that really sets SmartSource apart from the other “big three” is the fact that you can get these offers from local circulars.

The final major coupon site that’s been around for quite a while is ValPak. ValPak, like the other two, offers its own list of national manufacturer coupons customized by zip code.

    Letting Others Do Your Research

So why don’t people just visit the big three coupon sites and call it good? Because the Internet is so filled with information now, no single website holds all of the best deals. To save the most on your groceries, you’d need to hunt through all three “source” coupon sites, as well as hunt the web for exclusive coupons and offers that are only offered at manufacturer websites and nowhere else. That can take a lot of time and effort. Luckily, there are people out there who love doing this kind of research so much, that they’re willing to do it for you and offer you the fruits of their research.

The Penny-Pincher Gazette is one of those resources. All data at the PPGazette are collected from the three major sites listed above. Membership is free, and every week you can quickly review the best deals (including from local circulars) without having to visit multiple websites to find them.

Another very popular website that I am not ashamed to admit that I visit very often is CouponMom.com. CouponMom is run by Stephanie Nelson who was featured on Oprah, The Today Show and other talk shows, because she offers the service for free as an effort to help stamp out world hunger. By helping people save money on groceries, she’s hoping to encourage people to donate to hunger organizations through her “Cut Out Hunger” initiative.

Her website is easily one of the most comprehensive collections of deals from not only “the big three,” but also many hard-to-find offers from all throughout the Internet. If you choose only one website to visit before you do your grocery shopping, this one should be it.

    Unique Grocery Coupon Websites

Sometimes, the standard coupon sites don’t really offer what you’re looking for. Maybe you have different tastes than most people, or you’re more interested in natural products. There are specialized sites that offer coupons for you too, if you know where to look.

One of those is Mambo Sprouts. a website dedicated to offering you coupons on organic foods.

At last glance, Mambo Sprouts offered two pages of coupons, as well as some cool articles and an entire community section where you can hook up with other folks who are into natural and organic living.

A last site that deserves mention, simply because it’s giving “the big three” a run for their money, is RedPlum.com. RedPlum offers visitors with free exclusive offers based on your zip code.

In other words, if you can’t find it elsewhere, you might find it at RedPlum. As you can see, the Internet now offers an abundance of opportunities to shave hundreds off of your grocery bill every month. It seems inconceivable that anyone would go grocery shopping without coupons when there are so many free offers out there (free money, basically) available for the taking.

If you shop with coupons, do you know of any other great free grocery coupon websites? Share them in the comments section below.

Unfortunately, my local grocery store has a no-internet printed coupons policy. They flat refuse anything that even looks like it was printed at home. So, none of these sites do any good for people around here.

But, they do have some great coupons, if you can use them!

Top 10 Websites for Shopping on the Cheap

Tell me if this sounds familiar: you’re relaxing in bed on a Sunday with a cup of coffee, coaxing the knot out of your brain left after five margaritas at Cabo Cantina, and flipping through the latest issue of Vogue. Bazaar. or Elle. After two hundred pages of Zac Posen dresses, Louboutin heels, Marc Jacobs bags, and “Smart Splurges Under $500,” you begin to cry.

Even if you traded in that hard-earned internship for a paid job delivering pizzas; even if you dropped out of school and stopped paying tuition; even if you sold a kidney, maybe two, on the black market in Thailand you still wouldn’t be able to afford a pair of $14,000 knee high alligator boots from Manolo Blahnik, or a $20,000 Hermes “Birkin” bag.

If you’re a dedicated follower of fashion like me, but poor as hell (like me), you need to know about these cheap online shopping websites: (In alphabetical order.)

amazon.com This site isn’t just for discounted books anymore. Amazon’s apparel and accessories department offers equally amazing deals on clothing, bags, and shoes from all the top labels. There are deals for every price range from over-the-knee patent boots from Jimmy Choo for $379 ($620 off the original price) to Seven7 skinny jeans for $18, a 70% mark down.

asos.com As Seen on Screen is a British company that specializes in trendy fashion items that are based on (or the same as) items worn by your favorite celebrities. They’ve got ASOS brand leather knee-high gladiators in the style of Ashley Olsen for £55 (about $102), a studded belt identical to the one Carrie wore in the “Sex and the City” movie for £15 (about $28), and an amazing selection of items from independent designers like a sheer chiffon floral top by To Love Kuvaa for £30 (about $56).

fashionjunkee.com This is by far the best place to find imitation designer purses. If you’re thousands of miles from Canal Street (or if the idea of Canal Street makes you retch), you’ll love Fashion Junkee. Their “Inspired by Marc Jacobs” Stam bag is a ridiculously low $46, and their “Inspired by Balenciaga” motorcycle bag is only $58 and comes in twenty different colors.

forever21.com This is the store that definitely sucks away the biggest portion of my paycheck. See a plaid Dolce Gabbana skirt on the fall runway you’re dying to have? Chances are they’ve got a similar item in their store for about a thousand dollars less. But the store can get crowded, and the music they play is annoying, so shopping online is a godsend. They add new merchandise everyday so visit often. Also, be sure to check out their higher end (as in, a few extra Hamiltons) label Twelve by Twelve and their accessories line For Love 21 .

knowlabel.com This isn’t a designer label (Know Label, get it?), but if you don’t care what the tag says then this is an amazing website to find high quality clothing at low prices. My favorite items include a little black party dress with rosettes in the style of Philip Lim for $48, and a white silk pleated babydoll top with black ribbon trim that looks like it was taken off the back of Chloe Sevigny, also only $48.

newport-news.com This site is really all about the shoes. They’ve got dresses, bikinis, and lingerie, but these items tend to be for older women, mostly in their 30s. Skip over that stuff and go right to the footwear. They’ve got a pair of studded platform oxford booties currently on sale for $39 (was $49) that I’ve been dying to buy and classic t-strap pumps in a range of colors for only $29.

rustyzipper.com This is like a flea market you don’t have to wake up at 6 AM and drive to. They’ve got hundreds of vintage items for men and women all for around $30. Shoes, pants, dresses, all categorized by style (“Disco,” “Hippie,” etc.) and era (from the 1940s to today).

target.com I try to stay away from actual Target stores because I find that I walk in just trying to buy paper towels and come home with two bras, a pair of jeans, and a George Foreman Grill. I stick to target.com to keep myself from over-shopping and to make sure that what I walk in for is what I walk away with. In recent years they’ve also earned major style points with their Go International designer labels. Currently it’s Richard Chai ’s turn, but my favorite was definitely Proenza Schouler’s line. I wear their bustier top all the time!

topshop.com Supposedly the British high street chain Topshop is coming to America, but until it makes it to your city, you’ll have to settle for browsing the runway worthy duds and Kate Moss designed separates online.

Has anyone got a favorite discount shopping site they d like to add to this list? I m always looking for new places to burn through my savings.
