11 Tips for Safe Online Shopping

Billions of dollars will be spent online over the course of the next month, and, unfortunately, there are those that will be looking to steal some of it. Make sure you’re not a victim.

Let’s face it, there’s every reason in the world to shop online. The bargains are there. The selection is mind-boggling. The shopping is secure. Shipping is fast. Even returns are pretty easy, with the right e-tailers. Shopping has never been easier or more convenient for consumers.

But what about the bad guys who lay in wait? IID’s Third Quarter eCrime Report for 2011 indicates that use of phishing attacks (where thieves attempt to swindle you out of your sign-in credentials and even credit card info by pretending to be a real website, or even an online bank) is down, as much as eight percent since the second quarter and 11 percent since the third quarter of last year. That’s great news except the same report says sites with malware (malicious code aimed at compromising your privacy) has increased by 89 percent since the second quarter.

Stay calm. While somewhat alarming, these stats should not keep you from shopping online. You simply need some common sense and practical advice. Follow these basic guidelines and you can shop online with confidence. Here are 11 tips for staying safe online, so you can start checking off items on that holiday shopping list.

1. Use Familiar Websites
Start at a trusted site rather than shopping with a search engine. Search results can be rigged to lead you astray, especially when you drift past the first few pages of links. If you know the site, chances are it’s less likely to be a rip off. We all know and that it carries everything under the sun; likewise, just about every major retail outlet has an online store, from Target to Best Buy to Home Depot. Beware of misspellings or sites using a different top-level domain (.net instead of .com, for example) those are the oldest tricks in the book. Yes, the sales on these sites might look enticing, but that’s how they trick you into giving up your info.

2. Look for the Lock
Never ever, ever buy anything online using your credit card from a site that doesn’t have SSL (secure sockets layer) encryption installed at the very least. You’ll know if the site has SSL because the URL for the site will start with HTTPS:// (instead of just HTTP://). An icon of a locked padlock will appear, typically in the status bar at the bottom of your web browser, or right next to the URL in the address bar. It depends on your browser.

Never, ever give anyone your credit card over email. Ever.

3. Don’t Tell All
No online shopping store needs your social security number or your birthday to do business. However, if crooks get them, combined with your credit card number for purchases, they can do a lot of damage. The more they know, the easier it is to steal your identity. When possible, default to giving up the least amount of information.

4. Check Statements
Don’t wait for your bill to come at the end of the month. Go online regularly during the holiday season and look at electronic statements for your credit card, debit card, and checking accounts. Make sure you don’t see any fraudulent charges, even originating from sites like PayPal. (After all, there’s more than one way to get to your money.)

If you do see something wrong, pick up the phone to address the matter quickly. In the case of credit cards, pay the bill only once you know all your charges are accurate. You have 30 days to notify the bank or card issuer of problems, however; after that, you might be liable for the charges anyway.

5. Inoculate Your PC
Swindlers don’t just sit around waiting for you to give them data; sometimes they give you a little something extra to help things along. You need to protect against malware with regular updates to your anti-virus program. PCMag recommends Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus (4.5 stars, Editors’ Choice, $39.95 direct), which has extras to help fight ID theft, or at the very least the free Ad-Aware Free Internet Security 9.0 (4.5 stars, Editors’ Choice).

Big Data, Analytics Sales Will Reach $187 Billion By 2019 #big #data #growth

Big Data, Analytics Sales Will Reach $187 Billion By 2019

Market research firm IDC forecasts a 50% increase in revenues from the sale of big data and business analytics software, hardware, and services between 2015 and 2019. Services will account for the biggest chunk of revenue, with banking and manufacturing-led industries poised to spend the most.

Data is the driving force underlying market disrupters such as ride-sharing service Uber. Data and analytic projects dominated the top of InformationWeek’s Elite 100 list in 2016. So it’s no surprise that IDC’s most recent forecast for the big data and business analytics market shows significant revenue growth for the next five years.

IDC predicts revenue from the sales of big data and business analytics applications, tools, and services will increase more than 50%, from nearly $122 billion in 2015 to more than $187 billion in 2019. The analyst firm estimates revenue by technology, industry, and geography in its Worldwide Semiannual Big Data and Analytics Spending Guide .

Service-related opportunities are expected to account for more than half of all revenue during the forecast period, according to IDC. IDC broke down those services even more into IT Services and Business Services. It said that IT Services are expected to bring in more than three times the annual revenues of Business Services.

After service, at number one, software is the next biggest revenue generator in big data and business analytics, according to IDC, with sales expected to generate more than $55 billion in revenues in 2019. Nearly half of those revenues are expected to come from purchases of end-user query, reporting, and analysis tools, and of data warehouse management tools, according to IDC.

Organizations are expected to spend on hardware specifically in the big data and business analytics realm. IDC is forecasting hardware spending to hit nearly $28 billion in 2019.

In a prepared statement. Dan Vesset. group vice president of analytics and information management at IDC, said:

Organizations able to take advantage of the new generation of business analytics solutions can leverage digital transformation to adapt to disruptive changes and to create competitive differentiation in their markets. These organizations don’t just automate existing processes — they treat data and information as they would any valued asset by using a focused approach to extracting and developing the value and utility of information.

Industries Reaping Big Data Rewards

Breaking it down by industry, IDC said the largest revenue opportunities are in manufacturing and banking — with discrete manufacturing forecast to reach $22.8 billion in 2019, banking predicted to reach $22.1 billion in 2019, and process manufacturing expected to reach $16.4 billion in 2019.

IDC identified four other industries expected to generate revenues of more than $10 billion in 2019 — federal and central government, professional services, telecommunications, and retail.

Meanwhile, the industries that experience the fastest revenue growth in big data and business analytics revenue are expected to be utilities, resource industries, healthcare, and banking.

Size Matters

The biggest organizations are expected to be the biggest purchasers of big data and business analytics applications, tools, and services. IDC said sales of these products to companies with more than 500 employees are expected to generate a combined total of more than $140 billion in revenue in 2019.

“There is little question that big data and analytics can have a considerable impact on just about every industry,” said Jessica Goepfert. program director for customer insights and analysis, at IDC, in a statement. “Its promise speaks to the pressure to improve margins and performance while simultaneously enhancing responsiveness and delighting customers and prospects. Forward-thinking organizations turn to this technology for better and faster data-driven decisions.”

Breaking out Geographies

IDC also broke down the forecast numbers on a geographic basis. The US will account for more than half of all revenue generated by sales of big data and business analytics software, technology, and services, the company said. By 2019, IDC said it expects revenue generated by the US market for big data and business analytics solutions to exceed $98 billion.

After the US, Western Europe will generate the second highest revenue for vendors of big data and business analytics products and services, followed by Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan), and Latin America.

Two regions expected to generate the fastest growth in revenue from the sales of big data and analytics products during the five-year forecast period are Latin America and the Middle East and Africa region.

How to recover deleted files #recover #deleted #files #from #hdd

How to recover deleted files

We’ve all experienced the panic of deleting a file and then realizing we still need it. Luckily, if you recognize the mistake before you empty your Trash/Recycle Bin, it isn’t a problem: You simply open that folder, search for the file, grab it, and you can use it again. If you did empty that folder but you sent it to someone else, you might be able find it as an email attachment or in a file-sharing system.

The trouble starts when you can’t find it in those places. Can you undelete a file on your computer, mobile device, tablet, or USB drive? If it’s nowhere to be found and you don’t have a backup, is it gone forever?

Not necessarily. With the right tool, you may be able to restore your data.

Does “delete” really delete?

When you create a file, the operating systems inserts a marker that points to where that file is stored on the disk and prevents other files from overwriting that disk space. When you delete a file, typically you are only removing the marker, which means your “deleted” file stays on the drive until it is overwritten by new information. Until that happens, you have a chance to recover it.

Regardless of the type of device, though, you’ll want to act quickly and carefully to ensure the deleted file isn’t overwritten before you can recover the data. Simply browsing the Internet for a solution, for example, can overwrite the data, so make sure you use another computer to do your research.

Also, if you download a data recovery program like R-Undelete. don’t install it to the disk where your missing file is stored. That may seem like common sense, but overlooking that detail has caused more than one person to permanently erase the file they wanted to recover.

The best way to avoid losing your data is by creating a backup. but here are some quick suggestions to help you restore a deleted file.

Recover deleted files on Mac

Macs are equipped with a built-in backup system called Time Machine that stores files on a connected external drive or a network-attached storage (NAS) device. If you have Time Machine set-up, you can open it to use the Spotlight function to locate and restore the deleted item. You can also restore everything captured by Time Machine by using macOS Recovery .

This only works if you have Time Machine running before you lose a file. Otherwise, the program won’t know what you want to backup or where you want to store the files. If your system was not creating a backup, you’ll need to use a third-party file recovery program.

Undelete file on Windows PC

For Windows 7 and higher, System Restore could help. Each week, it automatically generates a restore point of your system settings. If the missing file existed when the last restore point was created and you know the file’s name, a version of it might be available. You can’t simply search for it, however. You’ll need to right-click on the folder where it was saved, choose Properties, and look under the tab called Previous Versions.

Computers running Windows 8 or 10 also come with a tool called File History. which is similar to Apple’s Time Machine. It can create a simple backup of your files to an external drive, but File History is not enabled by default, so you’ll need to set up the program and have it running before losing any data.

If you can’t find the file and you weren’t running File History, you will need to use an undelete utility.

When you back up your device with Acronis True Image, you can back up all of your data, including multiple versions of a particular file. A simple search and restore means you can quickly and easily recover the latest version of a deleted file.

Public Urination Laws and Penalties #ventura #criminal #defense #attorney

Public Urination Laws and Penalties

Urinating in public is illegal in every state. Defendants may be charged under a law that specifically criminalizes the act, or the prosecutor may allege that the defendant presented a public nuisance or is guilty of disorderly conduct. A harsher approach is to charge defendants with indecent exposure or public lewdness, which are crimes that may require convicted defendants to register as a sex offender.

Many city and county criminal ordinances also prohibit public urination. A typical ordinance might prohibit urination on any street, sidewalk, alley, plaza, park, beach public building or public facility, or any place open to the public or exposed to public view. An ordinance with this kind of wording prohibits urination even on private property, if it s visible from a public place.

For information on public lewdness, see our article on Public Lewdness.

California s law on urinating in public is covered in Public Urination In California .

Criminal Penalties for Conviction

State law usually classifies disorderly conduct and similar crimes as misdemeanors, which are less serious offenses than felonies. Penalties for a misdemeanor may include incarceration in county jail (for up to a year, except in Ohio, which allows misdemeanor sentences to extend to two years), payment of a fine, and community service. Penalties will be more severe if you ve been convicted of prior offenses.

Violations of local ordinances are generally punishable by fines, community service, or both. Local governments set the amounts of the fines. A typical fine might be from $50 to $500, depending on the circumstances.

Public Urination and the Homeless: Necessity as a Defense

Laws prohibiting public urination may be relevant to drunk and carousing college students, but other than that, they rarely affect those who are adequately dressed, fed, and housed. The majority of the population is never painfully far away from restroom facilities, and even if they need to use restrooms that are for customers use only, they can usually walk right in, without fear of being stopped.

This is not true for the homeless, whose numbers are increasing as services to help them area diminishing. Add to that the impossibility of finding a public restroom in most American cities, and the notion that one decides to commit this crime becomes absurd. One either drops trou or messes oneself, with no chance to go home, clean up, and change clothes.

Breaking the law out of necessity has long been recognized as a defense in America and England. To be successful, the defendant must show that he acted to prevent a significant evil with no adequate alternative, that he didn t create a bigger danger than the one avoided, that he had a reasonable and good faith belief in the necessity, and the circumstances were such that he did not contribute significantly to the emergency. Necessity does not negate the criminality of the act, but represents a public policy decision, that society shouldn t punish the defendant despite evidence of the crime. In essence, the defense asks the judge or jury to balance two outcomes — to weigh the harm to be avoided against the impact of the criminal act.

A homeless person who urinates in public might be able to satisfy the elements of a necessity defense. The significant evil could be avoided by deciding to neither eat nor drink; or to suffer the consequences of a full and bursting bladder. No civilized person would accept either alternative. A defendant might be able to show that there were no public restroom alternatives. Most defendants might also be able to prove that they did not contribute to the necessity that they are not homeless by choice.

But satisfying the requirements of the defense is not enough a defendant must also convince the judge or jury that the harm to the defendant had he followed the law would have been greater than the harm to society that resulted in his not doing so.

Public Urination and Sex Offender Registration

Prosecutors occasionally charge defendants with the crime of indecent exposure or public lewdness. If convicted, these defendants face the onerous duty of registering as sex offenders, a sentence that will follow them for the rest of their lives. Several states allow for such registration, including Arizona (involving minors and repeat crimes), Ariz. Rev. Stat. 13-3821; California, Cal. Penal Code 314(1)-(2), 290; and Georgia (when done in view of a minor) Ga. Code Ann. 42-1-12, 16-6-8.

See a Lawyer

If you’ve been charged with public urination, do not dismiss it as an inconsequential matter. A conviction for lewd conduct or disorderly conduct can have consequences, especially if you are charged again for such a crime and have this on your record. Consider consulting with an experienced, local criminal defense attorney, who will know how such cases are typically handled in the court that will hear your case, and can advise you as to your options. Never speak with the prosecutor or a prosecutor’s investigator without having your lawyer at your side.
