America’s hazardous waste management program ensures the safe management of hazardous waste from the “cradle to the grave”. Many of these regulations were developed more than three decades ago, so it is important we ensure they continue to effectively protect human health and environment into the future.

These regulations were developed primarily for industrial and manufacturing settings, but apply to any non-household facility generating and managing hazardous waste—including some facilities that may surprise people. For example, hospitals, schools, and retail stores all generate hazardous waste and are subject to our regulations. However, because these types of facilities aren’t industrial in nature, sometimes the design of the hazardous waste regulations can pose compliance challenges. In recent years, we began to explore how we can update these important safeguards for a retail setting and address the potential challenges these regulations present for retail.

You might not think of consumer goods at retail stores as especially hazardous, but some household cleaners, automotive products, batteries and other items meet the definition of hazardous waste when disposed. These goods are important parts of our everyday lives and may require special disposal when they are no longer able to be sold. We want to ensure that these items, if they are not sold and must be disposed, are managed safely and properly.

Recently, EPA and other regulators focused increased attention on the retail sector. Instances of hazardous waste mismanagement and non-compliance by major retailers led us to seek information and solicit feedback by issuing a Retail Notice of Data Availability (NODA) in 2014. Feedback on the NODA, as well as information gathered from our continued engagement with the retail sector and regulatory community, not only increased our understanding of how retailers handle consumer goods that cannot be sold but also shed light on the challenges retailers face when managing goods that are hazardous wastes when disposed.

I’m excited to announce that we are unveiling a cohesive strategy to address these unique issues and to ensure that retail stores comply with hazardous waste regulations. This strategy takes into account the feedback we received in 2014, as well as our knowledge of how unsalable items are managed in the retail sector. It builds upon regulatory efforts underway, including proposed updates and improvements to existing hazardous waste generator regulations and a proposed set of regulations designed to allow flexibility in the management and disposal of hazardous waste pharmaceuticals.

As laid out in the strategy, we’ve taken these actions to ease the burden of managing hazardous wastes in a retail setting while maintaining important protections to human health and the environment, and furthering the President’s goal of reducing regulatory burden across the government (EO 13610). The strategy outlines our next steps, which include:

  • issuing the final generator rule in fall 2016;
  • working on finalizing the pharmaceuticals rule;
  • issuing a guide on recycling aerosol cans;
  • proposing a universal waste rule for aerosol cans; and
  • issuing a policy on reverse distribution and RCRA.

This retail strategy is an important next step in our journey to explore options for reducing management burdens, ensuring compliance with hazardous waste regulations and protecting human health and the environment. I am glad to see this moving forward. And will review and comment on the strategy. I would also be willing to work with you on doing a similar strategy for law enforcement. They get trapped into generator status due to the restrictions on household haz waste disposal. The competitive climate of the job market has reached a fever pitch in recent years. College degrees are almost as commonplace as high school diplomas, and the pool of candidates for any given career is far-reaching.

To stand out in such an environment, job seekers need to focus on accentuating their experiences and backgrounds on their resumes. A degree from a prestigious university or an impressive roster of past employers can certainly make a good impression on hiring managers, but the real test of a candidate s fit is how well the person s skills align with the position in question.

Wendi Weiner, a certified professional resume writer and founder of The Writing Guru. noted that a job candidate s skills and relevant knowledge are substantiated by the keywords they choose to use.

In resumes, you see a skills summary, [which includes] problem solving, excellent customer service, attention to detail, etc., Ridgeway told Business News Daily. However, oftentimes, we don t see an explanation of those skills. If you have problem solving and critical thinking in your resume, you should tie those skills into your explanation of job duties and how those specific skills played an important part.

The challenge is greater for those who have been laid off or who have been out of work for an extended period of time. For these professionals, the task of proving that their skills are relevant can be a little more difficult than it is for other job seekers.

Ford R. Myers, a career coach, speaker and author of the book, Get The Job You Want, Even When No One s Hiring (John Wiley Sons, 2009), advised considering transferable skills that you ve gained from paid and unpaid past experiences.

Transferable skills acquired during any activity volunteer positions, classes, projects, parenting, hobbies, sports can be applicable to one s next job, Myers said. By adding transferable skills to a resume, employers get a better understanding and broader picture of who they are hiring, as well as the interests, values and experiences that the candidate brings to the table.

Interpersonal communication

To give employers a better idea of what you ve accomplished, discuss the size of the team and the scope of the projects you manage.

Social media

Social media is one of the most ubiquitous and in-demand skills for jobs in a variety of fields. Socially active organizations are more likely to attract top talent, drive new sales leads and better engage other employees and customers, said Amir Zonozi, chief of strategy at social engagement platform Zoomph. Therefore, when employers look for new hires, they re also typically looking for new internal-brand ambassadors.

Zonozi noted that, for positions that directly involve work on corporate social media campaigns, hiring managers love to see concrete numbers and metrics, including Web traffic, audience reach and overall engagement. Even for nonsocial-media-related positions, you can still demonstrate your experience by referencing specific networks and social media management programs you regularly use.

    Retail managers have to do it all: work with customers, manage sales associates, hit monthly store quotas and pitch in whenever something needs to get done.

    That s why employers in the retail industry often look for a blend of diverse, transferable skills on a resume that are indicative of a versatile, well-rounded candidate who has a good understanding of the industry and is able to adapt as needed , says Michael Lan, resume consultant at Resume Writer Direct in Wilmington, Delaware.

    These are the seven skills you most need to be a success as you rise in the ranks.

    Customer service is critical for everyone in retail, says career communications specialist Kelly Donovan in Los Angeles. Retail is all about making sure the customer has an excellent experience every time, so this skill should be at the top of your list.

    As a retail manager, you ll be supervising a team that may include inexperienced employees earning modest wages for a tough job, Donovan says. You ll need a track record of your leadership capabilities, and you must be able to provide examples of how you motivate people.

    Devin Pappas, who works as a store manager and visual merchandiser for Clearwater, Florida-based Patchington, says that being able to assess other people s strengths and identify areas of opportunities is key. Depending on how the store or chain is managed, you may be asked to provide one-on-one management and written action plans for store teams. You ll also have to create a team environment to get everyone working together.

    You may also be responsible for employees training and development, and you will need a background in recruiting or networking in the retail market to help fill positions, Pappas says. You ll need to be able to handle delicate situations with fairness and patience, follow corporate guidelines and hold every employee to high standards.

    Most retail employees are responsible for sales, Donovan says. So sales skills are essential for the majority of retail applicants, whether you re going for an associate position or a management position.

    Have examples ready that show you understand how to turn a browser into a buyer, and how to maximize sales by upselling customers with add-ons to their purchases.

    Your own sales experience may not be enough. Not only do you need to motivate people to work, you must motivate people to sell, Donovan says.

    A background in sales leadership is vital for retail managers. You may be asked to train sales associates and then improve their sales numbers over time.

    Retail is constantly changing, says Lisa Ritchie, vice president of human resources at Match Marketing Group in Mississauga, Ontario. Retail managers need to be flexible and mentally tough to deal with day-to-day variations. While the uncertainty of the industry can be exciting, it can also lead to burnout if you don t have the chops to handle the ups and downs.

    Retail is a fast-moving and dynamic industry, and it takes a lot to stay on top of everything that s going on. Successful retail managers are organized, good planners and strong troubleshooters, Pappas says. Being able to multitask helps as well.

    You ll need to draw on your communication skills to work with employees, customers and your own manager, Pappas says. You ll be directing store meetings and will need to confront a variety of internal and customer-facing situations, both positive and negative. Being able to communicate effectively will serve you well through it all.
